Rogers for his outstanding leadership, guidance, and interest during his many years as a teacher of Art on our high school. 3 How happily the laughing youth Lives from day to day, And never dreams that while he lives Death is not far away. There’s just a single heart beat Between the now and the forever; Just a single heart beat Between today — and never. Oh laughing youth, would that now We could see your smiling face! Would that we could have you back To restore you to your place! Then, we did not love you less. But now- we love you more. Now we see what we have lost Since you are on the other shore. Alas, a truth there comes to us — And oh, the pain it gives — Would that we honored those we loved While they yet do live! But no — we seldom stop to think Until the angel comes Like a shapeless shadow to steal aw'ay The lives of the laughing ones. Oh Laughing Youth, laugh on now As you tread the golden floor; Never again will sorrow touch you. Laugh on forever-more. By Karen Cooney At left: Raymond C. Higlcy. Jr. January 25, 1952 -June 24. 1964 Kenneth Damcott November 25. 1952 -March 8. 1969 Thomas Mocek April 20. 1952 -November 5. 1968 X ADMINISTRA TION Superintendent To The Class of 1970: There are two kinds of people in this world — those who do things and those who make excuses. The graduates of the Class of 1970 will do things. You will become healthy, successful citizens in the world’s greatest democracy — the United States of America - the Land of Freedom and Opportunity. Of course it isn't perfect because it is a country “of the people, for the people and by the people and people aren’t perfect. But it is the world’s greatest country from the standpoint of freedom and opportunity. So let's not make excuses and blame the City of Corry. the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or the United States. If we are not satisfied with our government — whether it be local, state or federal — we are free to improve it. We are free to plan our post-high school education and qualify for high-paying positions. We are free to make friends and be loved and respected by being concerned and involved with respect to the welfare of others. So let’s chart our future and have the tenacity to stay on course until our dreams materialize. We will help you draw the map. Sincerely, Ray E. Elsea Superintendent of Schools 6 Principal Members of the Senior Class: Your graduation year. 1970, has been referred to by the news media as the beginning of “The Fabulous Seventies”; in your care it could more fittingly be called “The Year of Decision Making.” Few graduates have been called upon to make as many and as important decisions as you will. Since everyone must face the future at the same rate of sixty minutes an hour, you have as much time as the “other fellow” to arrive at essential conclusions. Think things out; continue to do the good job you have been doing; do not follow the crowd blindly. Your parents, teachers, and administrators have faith in you; they have given you the benefit of their ideas, their hopes, and their knowledge. It is my sincere hope that your home and school training will help you in your determination to make good decisions. Remember that these decisions must be thoughtfully and carefully worked out by you - no one can make them for you. Russell L. Brant Principal 7 In The Offices Precisely what the future will bring is not known. All you can be certain of is that it will come, and that it will be different from today. But what you do today — in your personal or professional life — does affect tomorrow. Whether your experiences at Corry High School have fully prepared you to master a world of action — with all its promise of a richer life — depends upon how squarely you face up to the challenges that confront you. The real image of the future is cast by what you do today, tomorrow, next year. Since your graduation is only a prologue, I wish to greet you at the beginning of a great career. Francis E. Don’t spell on your fingers - you don’t have enough. Don’t call us old — we’re but thrice your age; And don’t say “ain’t” (that’s our privilege). Don’t dream out the window — use the blocks on the floor. Try using your head - that’s what it’s for. You can’t chew gum and talk - don't try it please; Just step to the front and make speeches with ease. Don’t say “by the year” — use annually.” And don't say “ain’t’’ (that’s our privilege). You can’t pull any tricks — we tried it once, too. Don’t try to be smart — we’re all on to you. You can’t fool us because wc know it all — You see, we have practiced since we were small. Never use slang — it defiles your language; And don’t say “ain’t” (that’s our privilege). By Karen Cooney Faculty Below: William Miller. Bookkeeping, Typing: Mrs. Ida Caldcronc. We'll be parted assunder from our budding days — And each will tread his separate way. CHORUS: Farewell fleeting youth farewell to thee; We're going out — the world to see. Farewell sheltered life please wish us well; Farewell to thee. Corry High, farewell. Farewell, professors - farewell to all; We arc ready to leave these echoing halls. Farewell younger friends — sometimes we’d rather stay. Thus, with sadness and joy — farewell we say. CHORUS. Farewell fleeting youth farewell to thee; We’re going out the world to see. Our Sophomore year was the beginning of our experiences together as a high school group. We will always remember the sale of class sweatshirts and our year-end trip to Conneaut Lake. But the Homecoming float, the “Pink Elephant,” will have to stand as the greatest achievement of the year. Our Junior year will always live in our memories. How could we forget our Homecoming Mother Goose float which won first prize in the competition or our great musical STOP! YOU’RE KILLING ME which was almost snowed out? There were also the class party at the YMCA, the snowmobile races, and the banquet and prom. “A Night in New Orleans,” which climaxed the social activities of the year. Our senior year was a time for fun. but more a time of decision. We were looking forward to post-commencement plans, and becoming aware that our time in Corry Area High School was nearly over. Class parties, the class play, and the banquet and prom where we would be guests of the Juniors highlighted the social part. Long hours of study, exams, applications for jobs and college admissions were the more serious part. We, the Class of '70, thank our class advisors, Mr. David Plyler, Mr. Max Ben-nink, and Mrs. George Orcutt, the faculty and administration for the cooperation and guidance they have given us during our high school years. 20 MICHELE ANN ADAMS Commercial General November 17 Prom Com. 3. I was just dreaming “What will the life of a 17-vear-old boy in America turn out to be like?” and just hoping that I would do as well as I could and break a little shell of a man to talk and walk with everyone. Like the proverb of “Time flics like an arrow.” the life in America with kind people will be over as a pleasant dream, but it will establish the stable fundamental in the building of my future life. And we the AFS students as messengers of good will to everybody — have to be carrying the responsibility of deepening the mutual understanding and friendship among every state and everyone in this world to gain the peace. I will be able to learn a lot of things that 1 did not know about you and United States. And I do hope I can tell you various things about my country. Corry is a beautiful city witfi great trees along the streets, and like the beauty of the town everyone has very kind and gentle hearts. I can feel that I am living in another home town. I can feel that everyone is the same everywhere and I can find no differences in the mind of human between in Japan and in America when 1 talk with friends. It is smiles and callings of “Hi! Hiroshi!” of my friends that escaped me from loneliness that I sometimes felt at school. I could realize how thankful the little kindness is for a man who is lonely. I will not — never be able to — forget the experience with tender hearted people in America. Yes. I must not. This is not only my own experience but also that of all the people who have helped me gain this. And I must snare my experience witfi my friends in Japan, too. They often wrote me and were eager to know' real America. And through my letters, they were getting real knowledges of America a bit by bit. It is my pleasure if you, people in Corry. could realized real figure of Japan better than before I came here. 1 must thank my American family. I could behave as if I had been in my own home in Japan. I do appreciate my friends and teachers who taught a lot of things with great patience to me that could not understand English well. I shall never forget this year in America. I hope I will see you some day. Hiroshi Ikawa 56 American Field Service Student James Stahl 1 was really excited as I opened the letter from American Field Service International in New York City. At long last, I was told my summer’s destination — a trip to Brisbane, Queensland, in the country “down under.” Australia. My period of waiting and honing anxiously was over; I realized that I would be on my wav in a few days. On June 17, after a 1716 hour flight from San Francisco. I was met by my fabulous family, the Robinsons, and my summer was really under way. My family consisted of Mom and Dad. Peter age 16. Lynn age 13. and Heather age 5. Throughout the summer. I realized that my outlook on life was changing. I was no longer content to meet a few people and “hang around with them all the time. Now I wanted to become acquainted with as many people as 1 could because i wanted to exchange ideas and thoughts. Life seemed to intrigue me; 1 really felt “in it.” During my stay I was afforded the opportunity to try many new'things, ranging from foods, to a new school, even to new beliefs and ideals. Perhaps the most interesting part of my new experiences would be the attendance at an all boys’ school, where I was required to wear a mid-gray uniform. Another different facet of the school would be their subjects, testing, and the formal atmosphere. As I review my time as an AFS student, I realize that it was the most wonderful experience of my life. To live, to work, and to play with new and exciting people in a different country was the most important part of the summer. Now that I have been home for a while and had a chance to settle down again, I have come to one important conclusion: AH people the world over are basically alike. They will open their homes and hearts to you if only they are men the chance. The motto of AFS expresses this love of mankind in its words: “Walk together, talk together All ye Peoples of the earth; Then, and only then. Shall ye have peace. These words possess a meaning which is much deeper than the surface. However, this thought cannot be expressed in words, as it is a feeling a feeling which a person acquires after a wonderful experience such as mine. 1 was very thankful for the tremendous opportunities f have had, and 1 sincerely hope that everyone will have a chance such as mine to discover the ways of a different national heritage. James Stahl 57 Rotary Student Exchange TON! WICK WIRE America the Beautiful! This is so true, but there is a second beautiful country in the world — Australia! After one whole glorious year of living with the Australians and learning so much and having such a wonderful time I couldn’t help but fall completely in love with this sunburnt country. I arrived in Gympic, Queensland, Australia on July 21, 1968. Right away they had a party for me and introduced me to the people 1 would be associated with during my stay there. They also introduced me to the food, which was so good it had an adverse affect on me because I ate so much of it. The Australian countryside intrigued me. The colors are mainly browns and greens, but there was so much beauty in these duller colors. They aren’t just drab browns but golden browns. A golden that belongs to Australia and only Australia. This is not only brought out in the landscape but the people also. The people are as intriguing as the landscape. The further in the bush you go, the friendlier they are. Gympie is a country town and I found that the people there were so kind and friendly that they would give the earth to you if you wanted it and it was in their power. Their sense of humor was really great. They can look so serious and tell you something utterly fantastic so you believe it and then kick yourself and just about die laughing when you find out the truth. “There is no place like home” and I’m really happy to be back but Australia is now my home, too, and I’m so homesick. If anyone would like to see Australia, save your pennies and return with me and I’ll show you the second best country in the world! 58 Toni Wickwire Homecoming — October 3, 1969 Andy Williams, Cheryl Wilson. You’re Killing Me” Cast and Chorus The class presented “Stop You're Killing Me!” a play by Weiser, Polhamus, and Davis on the evenings of December 4 and 5, 1968 for the enjoyment of the public. The setting was a secluded island where a rehearsal was taking place. During the two acts of the play, three people were killed. Everyone was wondering who would be next. At the end of the play, the identity of the murderer was revealed. Much to the surprise of everyone, it wasn’t the person they expected. “Stop You’re Killing Me!” was under the direction of Mr. Max Bennink. class advisor. The first night, the chorus girls became locked up in the dressing room (quite by accident) and the always helpful stage crew rescued them by catching each girl as she fell from the vent at the top of the door (2 feet by 116 feet). The second night, attendance was rather low because of a blizzard in the area. 66 Corrine and Casey played by Sue Hooks and Bruce Burr and by Mary Domincssy and Scott McK night. Miss Kell played by Kay Simmons and by Jocltc Mokwa. Student Directors. Connie Mountain and Candy Eastman. The Chorus Memories November 25 — First basketball game . . . Mark Bloom Secretary.......................... Becky Summerville Treasurer...............................Sally Wharton Advisor............................. Mr. Max Bennink The class of 1971, under the expert guidance of Mr. Bennink and the leadership of Max Hartley, started out a successful year by winning first prize for their “Eagle” float at the annual homecoming festivities. Charity was the theme for the class of’71 and the juniors made S85 at a Halloween dance sponsored for UNICEF. A real spirit of class unity was felt during the presentation of the junior class musical, “Rough'n Ready.” Over one hundred class members helped to make the show a success. It was very well received and the cast felt honored to present their production for the patients of the Warren State Hospital. Candy bars once again frequented the halls of C.A.H.S. — bigger and better than ever. The enterprising juniors sold 2,800 and made a profit of $500. The snowmobile rally held January 10 was a main event. Over 25 snowmobile owners participated anti trophies were won by many. Selling magazine subscriptions and renewals was the next project undertaken by the juniors. The project turned out to be very profitable and it is hoped in future years it will replace all other fund-raising projects. Of course, the prom and the junior-senior banquet were the jewels in the crown of junior class events. The final act of the class of 1971 was a class trip to Cedar Point. It was a fun-filled excursion and a just ending to a fine year. To the Class of 1971: You all have ended another 180 days of your high school life. During these days many ideas were brought to reality from your minds and hearts. A warm feeling of pride must be resident in that special spot for such feelings inside of you. The willingness to give and give and give of your time, talent and concern is your trademark;. Ever be it so. May helpfulness, concern, joy and love always be found in your wake. Sincerely, Max L. It was a team effort all the way. Dan Taylor, an All-State and Big 33 candidate, showed the way for the Beavers on offense, while Steve Grice, an All-Conference choice, was a Beaver standout on defense. Dan Weaver and Bob Boutwell had great years on defense and offense, Boutwell as a center. Jim Dolan and Paul Goodwill, two sophomores, provided a great amount of help on offense and defense. Manning the guard positions were Norm Hasbrouck and Bill Damofall. Hasbrouck, a starter for three years, this season had his greatest year. Rod Burrows sustained an arm injury in pre-season practice and junior John Downey filled in at Quarterback capably for seven games. Other backs who made a great contribution included Mark Bloom, Mike Darnofall, Sam Weber, Ken Lewis, Steve Dubrosky and Jim Hanna. Standing out in the defensive secondary was Dave Crowell, a junior. Tim Cragg, John Curtis and Phil Knoll gave the Beavers a surplus of good centers. Small Sam Baressi, Al Harmon, Bill Ross, Mike Roden, Mike McCray, Cleon McCray, Sam Genco, Craig Bailey and Ron Bailey made contributions. Dan Millspaw, Daryl Emmons and John Curtis gave the Beavers punch on defense. Head Coach Lou Hanna this year terminated his career, spanning 22 years, as the head coach of the Beavers. His teams have won 127 games, lost 63, and tied 7. The Beavers have won or shared eight Sec. 2 football championships, more than any other school in the conference. Coach Hanna takes this opportunity to express his appreciation to all of the boys who participated in the football program, both past and present. Many of the players under Coach Hanna were named to All-Conference and All-State teams, and later played collegiate football. 143 GUARDS At Right: Row I: Bill Ross. Norm Hasbrouck. Bill Darnofall. A few good breaks here and there, and a few less injuries might have been just enough for the Section Title. The Beavers should be tough again next year with a good strong Varsity nucleus returning and some fine J.V. prospects coming up. The changing of weight classes next year could provide a problem in trying to fill an extra heavy-weight class to our already short-handed heavies. CAhS should be very proud of the wrestlers and their contribution in keeping the name Beavers respected in high school athletics. Row I: Bob Martin. Jim Bennett, Gordy Fralick. Jim Sekcrak. It was a good solid swimming team on the surface, but the surface proved to be too thin. Somebody missed each meet and whoever the “somebody” was left a big hole in the lineup. In spite of it all the team had a good Won and Lost record and managed a few team records. Team Captain Jim Stahl even established pool records in the I.M. at Oil City High School and at the Corry YMCA. Included in the frustration was the on-again-oft-again Section II Championship. The powers that be still have not recognized swimming as an official Section II Sport. Official or not, the Beaver Swimmers claim the title for the third year in succession. Row 1: Doug Bcnnink.
