School M ascol Corry Senior High School Corry, Pennsylvania The Land of Make Believe Foreword Backward, flow backward, 0 tide of the years! I am so weary of toil and of tears- Toil without recompense, tears all in vain- Take them and give me my childhood again. KTHE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVED may seem, at first, a rather light theme for a year book published during such troubled times. The Corrian. staff, however, firmly believes that every- one is better able to face the serious situations which confront him, if he cherishes cheerful and pleasant memories of the past. With this thought in mind, the staff has en- deavored to prepare an annual which will carry the reader back to his childhood through a medium of dreams and nursery rhymes. But the joyous theme in uso, Like the tale of Mother Goose, In myth and fable so abounds, It quite bewilders and confouuds. 2 Our Castle in the Land of Make Believe There nmid the busy lumnning Of our city fair, Proudly stands tho old High Building 'Tis for hm' we care. Of our city fair, So ascends our veneration, Proudly stands the old High Building Corry High, to you. Tis for her we care. LOUIS HANNA The Class of 1952 gratefully deflicates this issue of the Corrian to Mr. Louis Hanna. My E- lf, . ef. - , - .gs ? Lawrence M. Douglas, D. Ed ..... Dual Monarchy SUPERINTENDENT As we work with young people over a long period of years, our understanding of them develops and we learn to know the difficulties they face. We see essentially the same problems being met by suc- ceeding groups and have an opportunity to watch character development as the problems are solved. We know that graduation from high school requires not only ability, but also the determination to succeed, and the strength to withstand temptations to give up by turning to some seemingly easier path. So it is a happy occasion for us when we can certify that you have successfully completed this important step in your progress. Our responsibility for your education is a heavy one. So much depends on the influences surrounding these formative years. Our con- cern is not only with the things you learn but even to a greater extent with the attitudes that you form. Your future happiness and the extent of your contribution to the world are dependent not only on your knowledge of things but also upon your ability to live effectively with others. We hope that we have performed our part well and that your school experience leads you to a good life. May I congratulate you for having successfully completed your high school work. L. M. DOUGLAS There were two mon in our town, And they were wond'x-ous wise. 6 Dual Monarchy .......... Howard J. Sheen l PRINCIPAL Message to Seniors: In these trying times of high international tensions and war scares, it is hard to plan a life course. You seniors are bound to be apprehensive of your future vocational careers for you do not know if and when you will be called into ser-vice. The best plan to follow is to include the service time that will be devoted for this purpose and look beyond the period enlistment or draft. If you plan to attend college or have other vocational plans, yow should continue with those plans, for even if youeare called into service, it is always possible to pick up your interrupted, educational plans when you return. You seniors will be the citizens of tomorrow and it will be your duty and privilege to carry on the functions of local, state, and federal govern- ments and activities. You should be prepared for these irnportant duties by the education that you receive in high school, college, and other walks of life. The faculty and I wish to congratulate you upon the successful corn- pletion of your high school course and extend to you our best wishes for a successful future. HOWARD f. SHEEN There were two men in om' town, And they were w0nd'1'ous wise. '7 I To Honor Two Retiring Teachers MRS. As Juniors we had a tremendous re- sponsibility facing us -A the Play and the Prom. Under the direction of Mr. Philip Legal, we produced the very entertaining Cannibal Queen which netted us enough money to finance the Junior-Senior banquet and dance. The annual Junior Class Play was directed by Mr. Philip Legal with Donald Bagley as student director. The play deals with the escapades of a young newspaper editor who allows a rival paper to publish, first hand, the story of a murder which happened in his own town. Valuing his position, he finds out that an old friend of his is bringing a savage woman to Cen- . . Betty VVest . . Ronnie Shoop .. Sophie Sander terville. This scoop might save him his job. The Professors nephew arrives but he is without this savage queen. The editor succeeds in induc- ing his stage struck fiancee to portray the Queen. She, in turn, bribes a negro maid and a porter to be her attendants. Much hilarity ensues during the remaining scenes until, finally, the owner of the hotel saves the day by producing the real Cannibal Queen. Secletaly Adi lSOl , President .... if ' . , . f . . . Mr. NVilliam Miller in 'Q-,. i' 4, A-'aff 1 E On a day that could be put off no longer, a group of bewildered sophomores passed through the doors of Corry Senior High School. Shocked at the fact that we had survived, we began some of our duties for the year. At our first meeting we elected our class officers who, we knew, would serve as dependable leaders. Although we were silent in most of the year's activities, we always held our place in the line of sports. Football gave us such talent as Ronnie Gates, Bob Douglas, Don Wood, John Halfast and Jim Coatesg basketball contributed such fellows as Frank Lloyd, Larry Cassett and Ted El-chynski. VVe know our first year at Corry Senior High School has been quite uneventful, but we have definite plans for the coming year. As juniors we promise to be wide awake in order to create a pace that will set the world. on fire. Youth now flees on feathered feet. Band: 5. Dickinson: M. Chiricuzio: S. Bennett, L. johnstong D. And Early To Rise Spearheaded by five senior lettermen and a host of juniors and sophomores, the 1951 edition of the Corry High School football varsity fought through a nine game schedule to record seven wins, one loss, and one tie. Although plagued by injuries, the Beavers played inspired and spectacular football. The season's summary follows: Handicapped by the loss of Roger Andrus, a veteran punter and blocker, the Beavers lost the opener to a good Warren eleven. Two blocked punts led to the Dragon's scores. The Beavers scored on a sustained march, Score: Warren 13, Corry 6. Scoring four touchdowns in the first period, the Beavers subdued a well-coached Youngsville eleven by a 41-14 score. Jim Hannan was the outstanding back on the field and Jim Coates showed much promise. The Beavers again struck fast against Millcreek by scoring three touchdowns in eight minutes. The rest of the game was played on even terms. Art Ireland, a junior tackle, was a standout on defense. Score: Corry 27, Millcreek 6. Scoring early and often, the Beavers steam-rollered Franklin High School into submission and registered their third win of the season by a score of 45-13. Larry Vanderhoof scored four touchdowns. Ervin Goodwill was easily the outstanding lineman of the night. The Beavers powered their way to their fourth straight triumph against the Union City Bears by the score of 28-6. Hampered by injur- ies in the backfield, the orange and black offense was not so sharp as usual, Hodie McLean played a standout game for Corry. The Corry-Titusville classic turned out to be a bitterly contested battle. Jack Scott's offensive blocking was the key to a Corry victory. Jim Hannan and Ronald Gates were the- defensive stars of the game. Score: Corry 8, Titusville 0. Playing without the services of Jack Scott, veteran blocking back, the Beavers scored against North East in the last minute of the game to record a 13-8 triumph. Fine defensive work by John Halfast, Ronald Gates, Hodie McLean, and Jim Kelsey aided the Beavers in holding an inspired North East team to one touchdown. The Corry Beavers traveled to Meadville to meet the Bulldogs in their big Section II game of the year. The orange and black, inspired by Hodie McLean, run-back of the opening kickoff for a touchdown, scored 19 points in quick succession. However, the final score ended in a tie, 26-26, with the Beavers having the ball on the Meadville one- foot line as the game ended. Jim Bogden was the offensive star of the game, and Ronald Gates and Jim Kelsey were outstanding defensively. In the last game of the year the Beavers climaxed a successful season by scoring a. 13-12 victory over Oil City, Skip Moore, one of Corry's greatest offensive centers played defensive guard and did an outstanding job. 46 Makes a Man Healthy, ............ 1950 Letterman: Ronald Gates, Roger Andrus, Larry Vanderlioof, Jim Kelsey, Ervin Goodwill, Skip Moore. Although subscription prices and collections are based upon a guarantee of eight issues of HI TIMES of eight pages each, this yeai-'s staff is publishing nine issues averaging ten pages or more. , New equipment this year has included a new steel cabinet for the mimeograph machine and forty dollars worth of new lettering guides. Each hour finds the girls dilligently at work, striving to please all who ask for help. Their mascot, Oogie, an energetic little book worms, works constantly among the books lending his moral support to the energy of the librarians who strive to keep np with the fast moving pace of Corry Senior High School students. Believing that one works better when recrea- tion occasionally enters upon the scene, the thirty- seven members and their peppy advisor entertained at several gay parties and picnics, enjoyed roller skating sessions at Vifattsburg, sponsored candy sales, fed one entire family of twelve at Thanks- giving time, and staged the ever-successful Easter Egg Hunt. The sincerity of the girls is evidenced by the fact that they use any money they may earn through club sponsorship to buy new books, mag- azines, and library equipment. Their help is freely and cheerfully given to all those who require assistance. Come into the library at any time, and you will find some court- eous young lady who will say with a smile, May I help you, please? The Queen of Hearts . 0 Q Q Q . . . . 0 . . Members of the club are trying to obtain school credit for their cafeteria service by re- questing one quarter of a unit for work during the school year. They feel they are justified in this request since they work at least five periods ea.ch week helping to prepare food, and five noon hours helping serve the students. It is their responsibil- ity to help Mrs. Hunt supervise eating habits, keep order, and finish the work of the noon hour by washing dishes and getting the cafeteria in good order for the next day. VVhi1e he was in Corry the Vocational Program was inaugurated. So it can safely be said that for over twenty years we have offered to the boys some sort of vocation- al shop training. Many of the me11 working in the shops in C0l'l'y are vocational graduates. With very few exceptions they will testify to the soundness of this program. At present we offer to those boys who so desire a specialized course leading to apprentice- ship in Machine Shop NVork and in Automotive Repair Work. The boys in this department spend one half of their school time in the shops receiv- ing practical training under competent, industrial trained teachers. In the past we have had little trouble placing the outstanding boys from each department in jobs for which they were trained. It is our hope that this fine program will be enriched and expanded in the new high school that is at the present being' planned for our com- munity. It is also our hope that we will be able to offer some type of specialized vocational training for the girls in the high school. JAMES M.
