cDhe CORMAN 19 4 8 Corry Senior High School .... Corry, Pennsylvania ALMA MATER SOLAR SYSTEM There is a spot in the town of Corry Dear to the hearts of all, For good and bad for bright and dull It has a certain call. Its work and play make our hearts gay. As books we worry thru’— Hut when it’s past, we hate to think That we are leaving you. From early fall to springtime Our footsteps wend their way, From morning thru to afternoon We trudge along our way. Let us cherish the time, we spend within And keep the memories nigh. And recall with joy, the days we spent In Corry Senior High. Jerry Fay CORRIAN STAFF Co-Editors .......... Business Manager . . Advertising Manager Circulation Manager Club Editors......... SHEEN, PRINCIPAL This year, in keeping with the Corrian theme, “Heads Up”, it seemed perfectly natural for the seniors to dedicate their year hook to the one man who taught them the true meaning of that expression. Principal Howard J. Sheen has been a guiding light not only to his class hut also to all students of (lorry High School, past and present. The Class of 1948 proudly dedicates this copy of the Corrian to lr. Sheen in appreciation for his ever present interest in the youth of today. 3 SUPERINTENDENT . URSA MAJOR . GREAT BEAR MR. DAVID L. SWARTZ Education: Elizabethtown College Juniata College The Pennsylvania State College Degrees: B. A. Junia a College M. Ed. Tin Penna. State College Message to Seniors 1 congratulate the members of the class of 1948 on the successful completion of a high school course and I earnestly hope that all of you have secured while in high school some assistance in laying the foundation for future success and happiness. You are graduating at a time when two basic philosophies are contending for political supremacy in the world. The one holds that men. ordinary men. are capable of determining the policies that shall govern their everyday lives. It is the system that you have been taught in our schools, the system that has endured in this country for more than a century and a half. It is philosophy of government based on liberty, equality of opportunity, and tolerance. The other is a doctrine of both fascism and communism and it holds that the judgment of the average man is not to be trusted. The people are ruled by a party controlled by a dictator. The individual person counts for nothing; the state for everything. America can remain free from a government based on this philosophy only so long as the people of America accept the responsibilities which bring about the privileges of democracy. You who are graduating from high school must not shirk responsibilities to your community, your state, and nation. Daniel Webster once said. “God grants liberty only to those who love it and are always ready to guard and defend it”. I challenge all of you to do your part to preserve the precious heritage of American Democracy, and to lend your support in any way possible to keep America strong and to keep America free. 4 DAVID L. THE CHARIOTEER Class Officers President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Sophomore Jack Whitehead William Zaflropulos Ruby Hildebrand Joel la Weslly Junior William Zafiropulos Frank Frisina Joanne Miller Ruby Hildebrand Senior William Zafiropulos Frank Frisina Joanne Miller Patricia Cullen The class of 1948 entered the unexplored halls of Senior High as trembling sophomores in September, 1945. After a few days of exploring the frightening halls, we gained a small amount of self-confidence and settled down for the; year. Our first class meeting was held in the auditorium at which time Mr. Sheen gave us a few much needed words of encouragement. At this meeting we also elected our class officers and under their capable leadership we finished our sophomore year in Senior High. After vacation we came back, full of pep. We were determined to show the rest of the school that we were really wide-awake. We elected officers and set sail on a grand and glorious year. Our accomplishments were a splendid Junior play and a prom which everyone will remember as the most beautiful one that was ever given. Our senior year, which was a busy one. began with the election of officers. Throughout the year, there were various class events. Some of the lighter events were the Senior Class Dance which was held the Friday before graduation, the Junior-Senior Class picnic held the following Monday, Class-day moving up exercises on Tuesday, and the Alumni banquet and dance which was held on the Thursday after Graduation. Some of our more serious events were the Baccalaureate Exercises, in charge of the Ministerial Association, and finally, “Graduation.” With this list of interesting events, we ended our career at Senior High School. 7 SENIORS .... TUMBLIN’ CREEK The 1947 Junior Class Play, based upon the residents of Tumblin’ Creek, Tennessee, was judged an outstanding success by all who attended. The play, being somewhat different from former years in that it was based upon the lives of “hill-billies” living nearly fifteen years ago, was centered about a feud between the John Thomas and George Payne families over the stealing of a pig and the fact that both families were intent upon their daughters marrying the “city” schoolmaster. The play was rich in “hill” pronunciation and action. The men engaged in “shooting it out”, and the women carried on a knock-down-drag-out hair pulling contest which more than added to the hilarity. All ends well, however, when Joe Bevins arrives “in the nick of time” to clear up the trouble about the stolen pig, and the Professor elopes with his true love, Madge Johnson. The Cast will be forever grateful to Mr. Philip Legal, our most capable director, and Miss Mary Diaz, his assistant. We are sure that the little town of “Tumblin’ Creek” will remain in the memories of many a ‘48 graduate for years to come. One of the highlights of the football season was the program presented on Loveland Field during the later part of October. This program which was very well received by the football fans stressed Thanksgiving hymns played by the band. Interesting formations and appropriate letter drills were presented at each game. The playing of The Star Spangled Banner and the school “Alma Mater were also a looked forward to event of every game. ORCHESTRA. DONATI'S COMET . HEAVENLY BODY The Corry High School Orchestra plays an important part in all civic affairs. Organized in the fall of 1947, the group took part in the Elk’s I xlge of Sorrow and won much praise at its first public appearance. Outstanding in the orchestra is the group of violinists who have received most of their musical training under Mr. H. Lynn Rice who organized a small orchestra in the Junior High School several years ago. Several of these players held their first musical instruments under Mr. Rice’s instruction. Whenever a small gathering of musicians is needed, the Corry High School Orchestra is called upon to participate. Several school concerts are planned for early spring while the orchestra is. of course, a much needed unit for Junior and Senior High Commencement and Graduation programs. 50 BAND DONATI'S COMET HEAVENLY BODY First row: K. Patsy Skinner The A Capella Choir under the capable direction of Mr. H. Lynn Rice has a membership of one hundred eleven voices. The group meets, as do all academic classes, once each day for instruction. A year's work merits the student one carnegie unit to count towards graduation. Resides meeting as a regular c lass, the choir presents several concerts each year. These concerts are highly valued by the community music lovers. Especially well received this year were the Christmas and Spring Concerts. The Christmas Concert featured the Fred Waring arrangement of the ever popular “The Night Before Christinas.” On the Friday evening proceeding Christmas, the program was presented to the general public, while the students were privileged to hear it as part of their annual holiday entertainment. The Ensemble Choir is made up of a smaller group of vocalists chosen from the regular A Capella Choir. This choir meets a much needed demand for public entertainment when a larger group cannot be accommodated. As the Corrian goes to press, the choir members arc looking forward with a great deal of anticipation to their annual trip to other schools. This is usually an event of the Easter season but this year it was thought advisable to delay the trip until the second week in May. This will permit the group to visit schools which otherwise would be closed for Easter. Toronto. Initiation services were held this year in tlie Senior High School Auditorium as part of an inspiring candle light ceremony in charge of the senior girls and their sponsor. Miss Ruth Bennett. During the past year, the Tri-Hi-Y sponsored a sensational dance on Sadie llawkin's Day. Kach member was required to ask the I toy of her choice to escort her to the dance. Thanksgiving baskets were distributed to local needy families as a project for the year. The Tri-Hi-Y Club not only serves as a Christian fellowship, but also provides a social background for the high school students. First row: L. Volk. M. Vadovich. B. French. J. Jaquith. N. May. N.
