THE CORPUS CHRISTI PRIORY September 29, 1949, the Feast of St. Michael, was a milestone in the history of the College-Academy. On that day the Very Rev. Martin Fischer was installed as first prior of the newly erected Corpus Christi Priory. The Benedictine monks from New Subiaco Abbey, Subiaco, Ark. began construction on their new school at Corpus Christi 23 years ago, around Easter 1927. The Corpus Christi College, as it was then called, was completed in 1928 and opened its doors for the first school year on Sept. 11 of that year. x Since that time the faculty of the College-Academy has grown in number from five to eleven and the student body from 56 to 250. The solemn ceremony of installation was one long to be remembered by all who attended. The Rt. Rev. Paul M. Nahlen, abbot of New Subiaco Abbey. presented Father Prior Martin with a large crucifix, a copy of the holy rule, and a breviary, symbolic of his installation as head of the priory. Father Fischer then lead the procession of clergy and laity to St. Placid Hall where be celebrated a solemn high mass with the Most Rev. M. S. Garriga, D.D.,LL.D., Bishop of Corpus Christi, presiding. A banquet for the clergy concluded the service, and thus was launched a new spiritual effort in the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

On November 11 the students attended Mass in t St. Placidts hall in celebration of Fr. Prior's feast day. After Mass he was formally wel- comed by the student body and presented with both spiritual and material gifts. On December 7 we were honored by having Fr. Joe Rickert. Maryknoller, speak to us about the missionary work in the U. S. and in foreign countries. uWhy did this day ever have to come? Andrew Rossi seems to be saying. It was one of those fateful days when, by order of Fr. Alfred, the students had to speak in St. Placid,s hall. Looking north onto the beauti- ful Nueces bay, we see our be- loved school in the foreground.
