The Rt. Rev. Paul M. Nahlen, O.S.B., Abbot of New Subiaco Abbey, pre- sents the foundation cross to the newly installed, Very Rev. Martin Fischer. O.S.B., Prior of the Corpus Christi Priory. The Very Rev. Martin Fischer, O.S.B., Prior, prepares to lead the procession bearing the foundation cross in part of the solemn ceremony of erection of the new Priory. THE CORPUS CHRISTI PRIORY September 29, 1949, the Feast of St. Michael, was a milestone in the history of the College-Academy. On that day the Very Rev. Martin Fischer was installed as first prior of the newly erected Corpus Christi Priory. The Benedictine monks from New Subiaco Abbey, Subiaco, Ark. began construction on their new school at Corpus Christi 23 years ago, around Easter 1927. The Corpus Christi College, as it was then called, was completed in 1928 and opened its doors for the first school year on Sept. 11 of that year. x Since that time the faculty of the College-Academy has grown in number from five to eleven and the student body from 56 to 250. The solemn ceremony of installation was one long to be remembered by all who attended. The Rt. Rev. Paul M. Nahlen, abbot of New Subiaco Abbey. presented Father Prior Martin with a large crucifix, a copy of the holy rule, and a breviary, symbolic of his installation as head of the priory. Father Fischer then lead the procession of clergy and laity to St. Placid Hall where be celebrated a solemn high mass with the Most Rev. M. S. Garriga, D.D.,LL.D., Bishop of Corpus Christi, presiding. A banquet for the clergy concluded the service, and thus was launched a new spiritual effort in the Diocese of Corpus Christi. On November 11 the students attended Mass in t St. Placidts hall in celebration of Fr. Prior's feast day. After Mass he was formally wel- comed by the student body and presented with both spiritual and material gifts. On December 7 we were honored by having Fr. Joe Rickert. Maryknoller, speak to us about the missionary work in the U. S. and in foreign countries. uWhy did this day ever have to come? Andrew Rossi seems to be saying. It was one of those fateful days when, by order of Fr. Alfred, the students had to speak in St. Placid,s hall. Looking north onto the beauti- ful Nueces bay, we see our be- loved school in the foreground. One of the many times the students met in St. Placid,s hall for fun and business. 0M this particular time some seem to be a bit boredJ Robert Cullins. who transfer- red here from Senior High at mid-term, fit in immediately with the seniors and was well liked by all. FATHER ANTHONY GOEGELE The 1950 LA PALOMA pays tribute to the Rev. Fr. Anthony Goegele, assistant pastor of The Corpus Christi Cathedral, for his un- tiring work with the youth of Corpus Christi. He is known to Catholic as well as non-Catholic teenagers through his able direction of the Catholic Teen Age Club, the only such club in the city. When not occupied with parish duties or the Teen Age Club, Ft. Anthony spends his time giving lectures throughout South Texas and holding convert classes. It wasn't the greatest season in Cavalier history but it was a successful one. The record of seven wins and three losses spells a good season for the Gents. This record was set, not only by the players, but by the superior coaching of Father Alcuin and Father Harold. The Pep Squad which followed the Cavaliers to each game played a com- manding part in the victories of the Cavaliers. The Pep Squad is sponsored by Father Augustine. The Gentlemen reached the scoring colum four minutes after the opening kickoff, with Sullivan scoring his first of three touchdowns. Golla's plac ment was good. The second TD came minutes later with Sullivan again going over, this time from the 1 Golla's point try was wide. Freer came back in the second quarter after a sustained drive from its own 3 with their fullback Summers scoring from the 14. The try for point failed. Freer counted again with onlyr 9 seconds left in the first half. The score at half time stood at 13-13. The Cavaliers took the second-ha kickoff and went on to score with Sullivan scoring his final marker of the night. Golla's kick was goo Purcell pushed over the final TD of the game when he went over from the five. Score 26-13. BROWNSVILLE EAGLES Remembering last year's loss to the class AA border city the Gents were out to win but couldn't qui make it, losing 13-6. After a scoreless first half the Eagles took the kickoff and returned it to the midfiel stripe. From there it took them only three running plays to score with Sanchez swinging around right en for 46 yards and the first tally. The Cavaliersf lone score came in the third quarter when Golla carried ov from the one yard line on a quarterback sneak, climaxing a 58 yard drive.
