'lTennis is inter- esting to teach because the stu- dents who haven't had much ex- perience are the ones you see a lot of skills gained, stated Wood- man. The people with limited prior experience showed a lot of im- provement as did the whole team. There were six players who made up the team. To set up the players, there were six singles matches, and then they combined to make three doubles matches. One of the highlights of the season was that they got to go to Maryvale, only to find out that they didn't have any tennis players. Wood- man is looking forward to having some good players coming from the eighth grade for the next year. Earnest Biebrich was the most valuable player for the team. He won the most matches at position number one. A little over 50 per- cent of the games were won. The freshman players had the oppor- tunity to try out for the Junior Var- sity or Varsity team which started in January of 1987. The girls' tennis team was coached again this year by Mrs. Linda Bates. There were four wins and seven losses for the season. One of the highlights of the sea- son was that they had very close matches against Tempe High and Agua Fria High. According to Bates, all of the girls on the team improved over the season. Stated Bates, We had beginners and some who have played before, but they all got more experience. l just hope that they will keep on play- ing. Bates enjoys working with the girls and watching them learn. Freshman Tennis 147
