8-2 record The varsity football team started their season with a 21- 9 win over state champion Tempe and an all time high of 50-O over Casa Grande. The Saguaro game started on Friday night in heavy rain. lt was called off and the crowds were evacuated due to flood- ing. The game was played the next day with the Dons winning in the last seconds of the game giving them the city champion- ship. Coronado's first loss came when they played Mesa. The Dons went behind early in the game and didn't catch up all evening. In their first league Ccontinued on page 255 Ca Brian Chatham holds the ball as Kean McCready attempts the extra point. Kean set a school record by kicking 37 extra points. Cb Senior, .Jeff Hantla breaks through the West- wood line for a long gain. Jeff racked up 406 defensive points this season. lc John Mannion runs past a defending Tempe Buffalo in an attempt to score for the Dons. John set school records by rushing 7051 yards and scoring 74 touchdowns. ld Ftob VWlson, junior, runs to gain yardage while a McClintock defender pur- sues. Oe Don Whitlach, junior, catches a pass for the winning touchdown against Saguaro. Don was a standout for the Dons. varsity football 23

The Dons upset undefeated McClintock in a game televised throughout the state. After beating Kofa and Scotts- dale, the gridders faced a three-way Colorado playoff with Westwood and IVloCIintook for the league title. But West- wood lost its last gameg and since the Dons had already beaten McClintock, Coronado was awarded the Central Divi- sion B League title. ld Tight end Dale Ftusnak, senior, tries to break a Westwood tackle after catching a pass. He led the team in passes caught. le Lennie Greer runs off the Held after the Mesa game. Lennie was named to the All-Division team. Of Coach Tom Dahl and Dr. Robert Skip- ton, the team doctor give medical help to Steve Letson, junior, who injured his ankle in the Westwood game. varsity football 25
