Taormina is located on the eastern shore of Sicily between Sigonella and the Strait of Messina. Taormina sets on the hills just north of the coastal fishing village of Giardini. The view from Taormina of the Ionian Sea and the active volcano of Mt. Etna to the southwest is consid- ered one of the most beautiful in the world. CORONADO anchored in the shadow of 11,000 foot Mt. Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. CORONADO ' s next port of call was Tunis, Tunisia, Febru- ary 19th to 22nd. Tunisia is located on the southern Mediter- ranean coast and borders Algeria to the west and Libya on the east. Tunisia gained it ' s independence from France in 1957. The city of Tunis dates back to 700 B.C. during the period when nearby Carthage was the most important Mediterranean set- tlement west of Egypt. CORONADO ' s crew enjoyed tours of the historical city of Carthage, Roman ruins, the Tunisian National Museum and the ancient Medina Market. 87
