HAIFA ISRAEL CORONADO visited the port city of Haifa, Is- rael, October 21st, 22nd and 23rd. Haifa is lo- cated in the northwestern part of Israel 47 miles north of Tel Aviv. Haifa is an old city first mentioned in Jewish writings dated in the first century. Over the cen- turies the city has been conquered by many invaders: the Crusaders in 1100 A.D., Napoleon in 1799, Egypt in 1839, Turkey in 1840 and Britain in 1981. Haifa today is a mixture of old and new. It is the home of many fine parl s and gardens, his- torical landmarks, and the Israel Institute of Technology, founded in 1912. While in Isreal many crew members took ad- vantage of it ' s close proximity to the Holy Lands. U-S-0 and CORONAD ' s welfare and recreation fund offered many excellent tours to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, the Jordan river valley and Masada.
