CTIZ MadFoI D THE UNITED STATES SHIP CORONADO AGF 11 FLAGSHIP FOR UNITED STATES NAVAL FORCES IN THE MIDDLE EAST DEDICATION THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO THE MEN WHO SERVED OUR COUNTRY BY HELPING TO MAINTAIN THE DELICATE BALANCE OF PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ARABIAN GULF AREAS. 15 NOVEMBER 1980 TO 31 MARCH 1981. The changing of the guard takes place at Mina Sulman Pier, Bahrain as USS Coronado (AGF-11) moored port side to, prepares to relieve USS La Salle (AGF-3). USS La Salle (AGF-3) (foreground) and USS Coronado (AGF-11) steam in the Persian Gulf just prior to La Salle ' s return to CONUS and Coronado ' s assumption of duties as flagship for Commander Middle East Force. CHANGE OF COMMAND, DECEMBER 1980 Captain Denis T. SCHWAAB, a native of New Jersey, was commissioned an Ensign in 1957 under the Officer Candidate Program at Newport, Rhode Island. Upon commissioning and after a short tour aboard the USS TALBOT COUNTY (LST 1153), he proceeded to flight training where he was ultimately designated as a Naval Aviator in July of 1958. Following an initial tour with Guided Missile Group TWO at NAS CHINCOTEAGUE Virginia, and VU-8 at Naval Station, Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, Captain SCHWAAB received assignments to both fighter squadrons and the RDT E comm unity. Fighter tours included VF-33, VF-161 and command of VF-151, an F-4 squadron homeported in Japan aboard the USS MIDWAY (CV 41). Shore assignments consist of a tour as project officer at the Naval Missile Center, Point Mugu, California, Head of the Ordance Branch at Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland, and once again to Point Mugu - as head of Flight Test at the Pacific Missile Test Center. Captain SCHWABB ' s most recent assignment was as Executive Officer aboard the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 66) where he participated not only in the normal deployment cycle but also in an eleven month major overhaul. Captain SCHWABB received his Bachelors Degree from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1956. In 1966 he attended the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, where he graduated with distinction. While at the War College he took advantage of a cooperative program with George Washington University where he received a Masters Degree in International Affairs. Captain SCHWABB has accumulated over 4700 pilot hours in approximately 24 different types of aircraft and has logged 750 carrier arrested landings. He has over 250 combat missions to his credit. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal (14 awards), the Navy Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Air Gallantry Cross, Vietnamese Armed Forces Honor Medal (1st class) and various other unit citations and campaign ribbons. Captain SCHWABB is married to the former Janet Rahn of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania and now resides in Virginia Beach with their two children, Sandra and Debra. His three additional children, Alan, Kathy and Karen, now make their home in San Diego, California. I RELIEVE YOU. ?) CAPTAIN H.P. KOBER TAKES COMMAND OF CORONADO Harry Pat Kober Jr., Captain USN Commanding Officer, USS CORONADO (AGF 11) CAPTAIN ' S CALL History will record the Hostage Crisis, the revolution in Iran, the Iran Iraq war, but few will record or remember the names of the many dedicated and professional Navy men who served in the Persian Gulf during this crucial period. This book is dedicated to those men who endured the hardships of long separations from their families, extended arduous periods at sea, and limited liberty ports in order to ensure the freedom of the seas and the access to the life blood of the industrial nations - oil. Your dedication to this mission and your professional performance in meeting each and every committment as- signed to USS CORONADO has been most inspiring and gratifying to me. You, the sometimes criticized younger generation have proven yourselves to be equal to any past generation in ability, desire, and accomplishment. Rernember this experience, be proud of your contribution to the security of your nation and the freedom of the seas. CDR Charles J. Naval force in the Indian Ocean area. COMIDEASTFOR shared base facilities in Bahrain with the British until 1971, when the British withdrew from the area. From that time until mid-1977 the U. S. Navy maintained a 10-acre logistical facility at Jufair, Bahrain, known originally as the Naval Control of Shipping Office and later designated the Flag Admin Unit, Middle East Force. In July 1977, that title was changed to Administrative Support Unit (ADMINSUPU Bahrain), with responsibility for providing assistance to visiting Middle East Force ships and the DOD-sponsored Bahrain School. In terms of assigned units, the Middle East Force is one of the U.S. Navy ' s smallest major commands - normally composed of only three ships, including the permanently assigned flagship USS CORONADO (AGF-11) and two rotating Atlantic Fleet destroyers or frigates. While assigned to MIDEASTFOR, Atlantic units are away from homeport without repair or upkeep services for approximately four months. The only assigned air asset is ADMIN- SUPU ' s Flag UC-12B aircraft and the helicopter carried in CORONADO. Within the broad mission of conducting operations in support of national objectives, there are a number of assigned tasks. One is to plan, arrange and conduct port visits within the Middle East Force operating area to carry out the peacetime function of generating goodwill and making American presence known by showing the flag. The MI- DEASTFOR operating area includes the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and, the western part of the Indian Ocean. Port Visits are conducted in all friendly countries that have shoreline along this area. Among these are Sri Lanka, Sudan, Mauritius, the Republic of Djibouti, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Jordan and Bahrain. Another MIDEASTFOR task is to maintain liaison with U. S. diplomatic representatives, governments and armed services of both friendly and neutral nations. , As an operational commander, COMIDEASTFOR further is tasked with responsibility for search and rescue operations involving Middle East Force units, as well as area coordination for U. S. forces committed to rescue missions. In addition to U. S. Navy assets available for assistance. Military Sealift Command ships also may be requested to help, as well as civil aviation rescue coordination centers located throughout the Middle East and Africa. Finally, afloat units assigned to COMIDEASTFOR operate throughout their deployment without access to U. S. bases, tender support or dedicated underway replenishment forces. COMIDEASTFOR is responsible for coordinat- ing and arranging logistical support of these units. This generally includes resupply of repair parts, consumable supplies, equipment and provisions which are obtained primarily from CONUS. This then is the story of COMIDEASTFOR. Following pages show the pictures of the dedicated men who serve and have served for the past 12 months of this book. ' ' ' We of the CORONADO crew that have put this story of change from LPD to AGF are proud of our staff and have enjoyed serving with them in this ever changing Middle East. Editor NCC D. F.
