It was doubtful whether the panthers would do well under their new coach Larry Hilsabeck, but all doubts were laid to rest as the Corona defense made the first T.D. of the night. It was Damien Kelly picking up a fumbled Arlington ball and running it 62 yards for a 6-0 lead. Don Struble made the extra point and it was 7-0. The offense had a bad night with Wilkerson completing 3 out of 5 passes for short yeardage. But, it was a night for defense as Louie Garcia sacked the Q.B. four times and Howard Tucker once. The defense held Arlington to one score and stopped the ex¬ tra point try. Making the final score 7-6, Panthers. Volleyball: In volleyball Corona fell prey to Norco ' s fine offense as it capital¬ ized on a few of Corona ' s mistakes to give Norco the win in the third game of the series. Courtney McAleese and Laura Minturn both did a fine job for Corona ' s game with Kathy Arellano and Jeanette Kearney backing them up. Tennis: Tennis against Norco is 1-1 as the Panthers lost the first match on Tues¬ day, but tied up the score with a win on Thursday. Denise Francis, and Shellie Miller both made fine showings. 1. The offense pulled together for the win, while the de¬ fense held off Arlington ' s attack. Courtney McAleese and Jeanette Kearney held the offense and defense together with help form Corky Davis and Debbie Enriquez. Against Colton however, the Panthers did not fair so well. They came very close to pulling one out in the last game with a score of 12-15 (Colton). The team came from behind only to have their chance foiled when they gave up the ball and Coltons fine offense pulled out a win. Tennis: In tennis against Arlington, Corona came up with a win, with fine showings by Denise Frances, Shellie Miller, and the doubles team of Nancy Cleveland and Pennie Pollock. Against Colton this week another win jacked up the spirits of the Panthers who are looking for a high place in the league stand¬ ings this year. Cross Country: Corona walked all over Arlington. The Panthers placed In the first five notches before Arlington runners even crosses the finish. Top runners were Robert Arguelles, Dixon Kummer, and Robert Rohe. This is just the be¬ ginning of a hopefully good season as the Panthers look for yet another 1st place year. Football: Corona chalked up another win as it rolled over Colton, 13-8. The defense again made a good showing as it held Colton to only 6 points, and helped by setting up our first score late In the third period. Photos: 1. Chris Cook 2. Corky Davis 3. Louis Garcia 4. Cross Country: Corona again made afineshowingas it placed the first five men in top positions before a San Berdo man even showed up. Robert Arguelles placed first as Robert Rohe and Kurt Johnson helped the cause. Volleyball: Against San Berdo in volleyball Corona faired well as it pulled out a 2-1 decision. Everyone played well as sophomore player Courtney McAleese led the team defen¬ sively. Corona again won as it topped Rubidoux 15-3, 10-15, 15-6. It was a fine showing by Jeanette Kearney and Corky Davis as the Panthers pulled for a big finish. Football: The Panthers were no match for undefeated San Berdo as it easily defeated Corona, 33-9. It was a hard fought game all the way but the Cardinals proved superior. Our first score was a 34 yard field goal by Don Struble, which made the score 7-3 in favor of San Berdo. Corona ' s only touchdown came in the second quarter when Fred Portlock blocked a punt and Don Struble picked It up and ran for a 31 yard T.D. Coach Hilsabeck said he be- leived the Panthers weren ' t playing up to par. That seemed to be apparent as the Cardinals rolled up 5 T.D. ' s. 1. Marty Wllkerson. 2. Marty Wilkerson. 3. Volleyball: The Panthers fought hard for their win over Poly this week as Jeanette Kearney led the way. Laura Minturn had a fine game, with many per¬ fect spikes. Corona was not so lucky against North, as it lost in two straight games. Laura Minturn played an excellent game, but it wasn ' t enough as the final score was 10-15, 5-15. Corona lost its second straight against Palm Springs. Coach Chitwood said it was the toughest game of the season. The games were close but Palm Springs just proved to be a better team, one of the best in the league. Jeanette Kearney and Courtney McAleese led the team defensively, the final score was 13-15, 12-15. Tennis: Corona did not have a good week in Tennis as it dropped three straight matches to Poly, North and Palm Springs respectively. Shellie Miller made a fine showing for the Panthers, backed up by doubles Nancy Cleveland and Penny Pollock. Cross Country: Corona made it three straight with a big win over Rubidoux with the score of 19 to 50. Kurt Johnson and Lany Gentry both turned in good times for the varsity. Football: The Panthers put up a good fight despite many injuries, to beat Rubidoux 21-0. Corona came up with 207 yards rushing with Damion Kelley at quarter -back. The defense put forth another fine job as they completely throttled the Rubidoux attack. Coach Hilsabeck was very pleased with his team as they moved to 3-1 in Ivy League play. Photos: 1. The Homecoming court comprised of Allison Richards, Gigi Lovell, Carol Hardy, Cindy Jones, Kathi Jones, Susan Medieros, and Erica Ellenson, presided over the activities of the week as the tension built towards the big game and the announcement of queen. Fun, emotion, craziness, and other ridiculous stuff all rolled into one, highlighted the activities at snack and lunch. The annual sale of the Lettermen led the way being followed closely behind by squirt gun fights, earthball soccer, crazy t-shirts, T.P. races, and even snow skiing. Other exotic events included an eye opener dance, beard growing contest, a dirty old man and little old lady day, and the annua 50 ' s day. Friday came and the week was topped off with the slaves who had been sold all week. The big night had finally arrived and amidst balloons, tears, and sighs of relief, people heard . . . and the new Homecoming Queen for 76 ' is . . . Gigi Lovell! Of course this was not the end of activities as the floats were led on the track to be judged before Saturday ' s city wide bi-centennial parade. Winners we re awarded at an assembly in the park following the parade. The seniors placed first in class compe¬ tition. Drama Club named best club float. That nighl at the Letterman ' s Ball, Queen Gigi was crowned, thus ending a week of activities and fun. In sports; Corona tennis dropped another one as they lost to Ramona. Coach Nino attributes this to an exceptionally good league this year. In volleybal the Panthers lost this week against Ramona, even though they played an excellent match led by Courtney McAllese and Jeanette Kearney. Corona Cross Country made it four straight wins as they ran all over poly. Robert Arguelles and Dixon Kummer both did exceptionally well. Corona has never lost a game in three straight years. So far it has been an outstanding season with many runners breaking ten minutes. In football it was a disappointing Home¬ coming night as the Panthers lost a close one to Poly. Corona came up with a fast score early in the game, when Wilkerson ran for 64 yards for a touchdown and Don Struble ' s extra point made it 7-0, Panthers. The Bears tied it up five plays later, but the Panthers came back with another to take the lead at half¬ time. Corona ' s defense just couldn ' t hold Poly as it came up with two more scores, 113 yards, and the win. 1 fllM r ’ 1 ‘r n ■ i .J. 9 H PARADE 1. Debbie Lukemeyer, Angela Warter 2. O.J. Watson 3. It moves Corona to 5-0 in the league. Larry Gentry and Robert Rohe had great runs with Dixon Kummer not far behind. Tennis-Corona lost to Arlington but came up with a win against Colton. All the games were close as Shellie Miller again played a fantastic game both days. Volleyball-Corona came up with a win against Arlington but lost against Colton. In the Arlington game Corona played a fantastic defensive game. With Colton they were not so lucky, as Colton edged over the top of Corona in the third game of the match. Football-Corona was blanked for the first time this season as it lost to North, 17-0. It was a long game as a hard rain fell making play even tougher. The Panthers were plagued by injuries, as the Huskie held them to only one first down in the first half. It was a disap¬ pointing loss for Coach Hilsabeck as he lost to his old team. This loss gives Corona a 3-3 record. 1. Kelly Brown, Robert Pena. 2. Ken King. 3. Robert Pena. 4. A win against the Indians clinched another CIF title. With these wins Corona has won 27 of their last dual meets, a record in itself. All seniors who have run all three years have never seen a loss by the varsity or J.V. team. Robert Arguelles maintained his 1 runner position. Volleyball: The Panthers lost a tight one to San Berdo as the offense failed to pull their game together. Corona came right back with a win a- gainst Rubidoux later on in the week. Kathi Jones and Debbie Enriquez, both did a fine job to help Corona ' s cause. Tennis: Corona started off with a win against San Berdo but failed to keep up their momentum as they lost against Rubidoux this week. No. 1 player, Denise Francis had some great plays while Pennie Pollock and Nancy Cleveland played a fine series. Football: Corona lost a tough one to Palm Springs in overtime. It was a close game all the way with one team scoring and then the other as Corona and Palm Springs became the first teams in Riverside County to go into overtime. Palm Springs scored on their last play, but the Panthers failed to score giving the Indians the win. Photos: 1. Rick Chiarito, Fred Portlock. Marty Wilkerson. 2. Danny Grasso 3. The Panthers were very disappointed as these losses moved them down in the league standings. Coach Nino commented that the loss against Palm Springs was expected because they are No. 1 in league, but he had hoped to win Poly and North. Volleyball: The Panthers started off with a win against Poly, only to lose to North and Palm Springs. The Panthers are now in fourth place as the season draws to and end. Cross Country: The last meet of the sea- 116 son; it ' s eighth win in a row and another Ivy championship. All runners had a fantastic day. No. 1 runner Robert Arguelles followed not far behind by Dave Cangelosi, Robert Rohe, Dixon Kummer, and Kurt Johnson brought vic¬ tory home for the varsity. Football: Corona came up with a win against Ramona as they finished off their league games. Louie Garcia, Don Struble, and Marty Wilkerson all helped the cause with touchdowns; Struble making all the extra points. The Panthers final record was 4-3. HOME Football: The Panthers finished their season with a win against non-league competition. North Hollywood. The Huskies will be one of the teams Corona will be playing next year in the Citrus Belt. Corona didn ' t waste anytime making a score; as on the second play of the first quarter, Marty Wilkerson passed to Rick Chiarito for a 73 yard touchdown. Corona gained 203 yards on the ground, led by Don Struble ' s 79 yards in 14 carries. Our second touch¬ down came late in the second quarter when Grasso took the ball for a four yard score. Struble made the extra point and the score was 14-0. Corona ' s defense again did a superior job as it held the Huskies to no score. Volleyball: The Panthers finished off their season on a winning note as they defeated Ramona this week. This win gives Corona a fourth place berth in the Ivy League. Coach Chitwood believes that since Corona is such a young team and has only been in CIF three years they will do much better in years to come. Tennis: The tennis team came up with a win after four straight losses as they defeated Ramona to finish off their season. Coach Nino believes the girls did a fantastic job against their competition and hopes to do much better. The majority of the team will be returning, including number one player, Denise Francis. Being a young team it is hard for Corona to do good against some of the more prominent teams. Aided by the help of Jeanette Kearney, Most Valuable player and an All League recipient, and Laura Minturn, Most improved, the Panthers put forth a most impressive year. Coach Chitwood believed that it was one of the finest teams, all around, that she has coached. On the J. V. side of things. Basketball: Corona lost its league opener to Arlington, 53-54 on Tuesday. Barr Ross played a great game as he led the Panthers with ten points, seven rebounds, and four assists. On Friday, Corona scored their first victory with a win over San Berdo, 71-57. San Berdo led the game in the first half and most of the third period, but the Panthers came back with 11 straight points, including a 25 foot jumper by Doug Fritz at the buzzer, to tie the game. In the fourth period Corona dominated, outscoring San Berdo 22-8. Some of the leading scorers were Doug Fritz with 19 and Kelly Nicholson with 14. Followed close behind by Wayne Baldwin with 10, Marty Wilkerson and Barr Ross each had six, Dixon Kummer-5, and John Tebeall had 4. Wrestling: Corona dropped the first two matches but won the rest of the individual matches with one tie to win Arlington 55-11. The Panthers scored seven pins and four decisions to clinch the win. Rick Chiarito in the 167 class had the best win of the night when he pinned his opponent only fifty seconds into the first period. On Thursday Corona dropped to Colton. It all came to the last match of the evening, Mike Burton made a valiant try but just could not over-power the Colton wrestler, making the final score 25-30. JAR 193 194 nsT On Wednesday, January 12, Corona High welcomed Professer Lew Marsh, Hypnotist. Mr. Marsh performed many feats, including, making his subjects feel unbearably cold and then hot again, hypnotizing the boys into thinking they were strip teasers, and allowing Jeanne Deits ' body to become as stiff as a board, enabling him to stand on top of her while she lay suspended between two chairs. The Panthers fell behind 1-0 in the first half, only to recover and claim the second, theirs; with goals by Roberto Peno, Tim Rudolph and Rick Thibodeau. Wrestling: In wrestling against San Berdo, it was a close one, a win for Corona would mean a tie for first. It looked as though San Berdo would run away with the meet when they won the first three matches. Frank Arroyo pinned his opponent to make the score 6-12, San Berdo. The Panthers then dropped the next three matches to make the score 6-22, San Berdo. It looked hopeless for Corona until Danny Grasso pinned his opponent which set off a chain of six wins to give Corona the win with a score of 37-22. Swimming: The Panthers lost their first meet 31 to 114 against Norco. Corona was sadly out-swam as the only win was David Mix in the 500 meter freestyle with a time of 6:23.5. Basketball: On Tuesday Corona lost a close one to Palm Springs. It was a tough game for the Panthers defensively as the Indians were much taller and had most of the rebounds. The high scorers of the game were Marty Wilkerson and Doug Fritz. Friday night we dropped to number one ranked Ramona 80-70. The Panthers stayed within three points of Ramona most of the game, led by Wilkerson, who totaled 20 points for the game. 197 The east coast suffers under cold and fuel shortage. THINK SNOW. . . for the Ski Club it was a January weekend at Mammoth. Skis, poles, long underwear, etc. were loaded onto the chartered buses for the seven hour trip to the hallowed slopes. Stationed at the Ponderosa Alta Sierra Lodge, skiers spent every available moment of the weekend on the slopes (in one position or another). The weather was per¬ fect and the two and a-half ended all too soon for most. Photo 1. Andrea Thiel. 2,15. Liz Emerson. 3. Perry Schaefer. 4,9. Cathy Griffiths. 5. Lori Gattermeyer. 6,11. Michelle Jamison was among the defensive standouts as she stole the ball many times. Debbie Enriquez helped the Panthers greatly in offensive play. Soccer: Corona lost a tough one to Chaffey 5-1. Chaffey played a fine defensive game, stopping the Panther drive short many times. Boy ' s Basketball: Corona snapped a five-game losing streak with a win against Arlington High, 71-62. It was a tough game physically as both teams tired at the end. Kelly Nicholson led the Panther scoring with 18 points, followed closely behind by Doug Fritz with 17. Later in the week Corona lost their secono to Colton. Coach Pratt commented that the Panthers were very tired and had not played up to par. Leading scorers for Corona were again Nicholson and Fritz. Swimming: Against a strong San Berdo Cardinal team the Panthers earned several strong wins. David Mix and Bill Farr 5 both faired well for Carda ' s swimmers in individual and relay participation. However, our small team just couldn ' t total enough points for a win. Photo 1: Mike Kerr 2. Ray Valdivia 3. Chris Blanchette 4. Francisco Servin 5. The large colorful mural depicting traditional Mexican and Aztec masks added much to our over-beige campus. Cinco de Mayo gave the group the opportunity to present the campus with traditional food and cele¬ bration of Mexico. The score was 42-17, with pins by Louie Garcia and Jim Finks, two forfeits on Ramonas part and a ma jor decision win by John Yamano and Eddie Murillo gave Corona the win. Swimming: Against Arlington David Mix continued to put in a good showing with Tom Patterson and Bill Farr helping the young team pull in some good times. Girl ' s Basketball: In a Friday noon-time game, the Panthers had a close one against Palm Springs. We held them until the fourth quarter when they put on a full court press and outscored us. Debbie Enriquez was the offensive stand-out, making many shots from the outside. Laura Minturn and Michelle Jamison helped defensively. Boys ' Basketball: Corona lost the fourth in a row, against Poly. Poly was just too big and strong offensively for the Panthers. Stan Longfellow was the high scorer. On Thursday, Corona played one of its best offensive games, but just couldn ' t get their defense together, as they lost to North. Kelly Nicholson and Doug Fritz led the Panthers in scoring. Soccer: Again the Panthers proved out¬ standing in their foot work as they out scored neighboring Arlington High. Coach Edwards Van Muyen was well pleased with his team both in defensive and offensive play. PHOTO 1: Josh Flores 2,4. Alfredo Lizarrago 3. Ramon Pena 5. Bill Farr 6. Mike Griffiths 7. Mario Juarez. They also sent four wrestlers to the semi-finals and three to the CIF finals. It was a triumphant year for Corona as they won seven and lost one, one of their wins being over San Berdo, their co-champions! All the wrestlers were outstanding and when the semi-finals came up, four Panthers were in, Richard Murrillo-115 lb. class, Louie Garcia- 178 lb. class (first place), Jim Finks-194 lb. class and took a first place, and David Quevedo took a third. Three men went to the finals; Garcia, Finks, and Quevedo. In the finals injuries hampered the Panthers as Finks was the only one to place, coming home with a fifth place medal. Michelle Jamison was Corona ' s leading defensive player, having many steals and gave many an opposition a run for their money. Lianne Forsythe was also good on the boards getting many rebounds. Most of the games were close, though not always a victory, well played. stated Coach Castro at the close of the season. BOYS: Doug Fritz was voted most valuable Varsity player for the 77 sea¬ son at the year end festivities. Fritz also received the most improved honor as he lead the Panther offensive in scoring. Dixon Kummer was voted Mr. Hustle, as he kept the team going through thick and thin. A stand-out on the team was Wayne Baldwin, who re¬ turned to play after a broken neck. Even though the Panthers did not fare as well as hoped in Ivy League play, they never gave up the fight. 254 JUNIOR VARSITY TOP(L-R): Jeff Gibson, Kevin Filbert, Raul Sanchez, Rick Iriart, Gary Jayne, Bob Brown, Coach Spencer MIDDLE: Vick Grizzle, Rick Blizzard, John Banks. It was a tight match when one of the Arlington players bogied on the seventh hole to give the Panthers the lead. Baseball: The Panthers have two victories under their belts as they won against La Sierra and Norco. Corona, under new varsity coach, Wilkerson, looked very impressive, especially against Norco as they blew them away 8-2. Nate Lelevier did a fine job leading the Panthers to victory. Girls Basketball: The girls gained an impressive victory over Colton. Laura Minturn led the Panthers on offense and defense with baskets and rebounds. Michelle Jamison led the attack on Colton stealing the ball many times, with Hetherington leading with re¬ bounds. M8 CM REK r- 260 1. Corona made outstanding performances at Orange Coast College Festival; the Southwestern Jazz Festival in San Diego; the Cypress High School Festival; and the tenth Annual Corona Jass Festival in May. They also appeared for the Miss Riverside County Beauty Pageant, performed at Disneyland, the Miss Orange County Pageant, and for many local clubs and organizations throughout the school year. Two main fund raising events of the year were the Jazz-A-Thon in April, with the band attempting to set a worlds record for continious play and cutting the LP Still Heavy after all these years . Stage Band ' s director Richard West was very pleased with this years stage band. This is the training band for the Jazz Ensemble. They attended the Neff Jazz Festival; Cypress Jazz Festival; our own Corona Jazz Festival and the Southwestern Jazz Festival; where they did exceptionally well with ease and style. The Symphonic Band performed in the band and orchestra festivals at Riverside City College, Auburndale Junior High, and Riverside Poly, where they received high compliments and honors. At one point the Panthers were tied for first place, but ran up against the tough¬ est part of their schedule where they dropped four games in a row.
