The Panther offense led by Marty Wilkerson gained almost two hundred yards despite the efforts of the almost helpless Rams. In the first quarter the Panthers gave up one T.D. By the second half the defense had settled down and the Rams never got another chance. The defense that night yielded only 108 yards, with most of that coming in the first half. Greg Pope carried the ball 18 times for 47 yards, Ted Carpenter going 12 times for 37 yards. Todd Busby carried a 50 yard pass for a T.D. 1 . Leslie Johnson. 2 . Coach Nixon. 3. Rick Chiarito. 4. RUBIDOUX 13-14: Well it was close .. .Panthers lost to the Falcons only by a narrow margin to leave Rubidoux the only undefeated team in the Ivy league. With Todd Busby filling in the Q.B. position for Marty Wilkerson the Panther offense gained 119 yards, 35 coming through 6 pass completions. One was a 12 yard scoring pass to Chris Clark in the final quarter. Altogether Clark caught four passes for 28 yards and Dan May 2 for 7 yards and one T.D. It was a hard game for the Panthers to keep up on, two fumbles led to the touchdowns scored by the Panthers. On the second T.D. Nixon decided to try for two points, but Busby was stopped just a yard short of the score that could have won the game for us. In the second half Lee Sheagley got the ball for the first time that night and scrapped up 41 yards rushing. It was a disapointing night for Corona. 1 . Gloria Smith, Shana Tramel. 2. Todd Busby. 3. Rams but an error, three hits, a walk and a hit batter led three Ramona runs to a 8-7 victory over Corona. Corona could not make up the difference in their last at-bat. It was a game that we should have won, but we let it get away from us replied the Panthers coach Frank Thomas. Our pitching wasn ' t coming around as fast as I wanted it to. Brian Sutton opened on the mound for the Panthers, going five innings. Gary Esquivel hurled the final two innings giving up three hits, three runs, walking two and putting one Ramona batter down on strikes. The Panthers received 6 runs in the fourth inning making the score a 7-3 lead over Ramona. But in the final innings Ramona rallied for two in the fifth to draw within striking distance and then in the final frame, the Rams won the game. I CORONA KEEPS RAMS ON TOES 243 1 PANTHERS SWIMMING TEAM: This years swim team did an outstanding job. Glen Doran used his abilities well producing many first places in the 100 and 200 freestyle. David Mix and Danny Reese aided the Panthers with victories in their individual events. Corona also had a winning 400 free relay team, consisting of Doran, Mix, Schick and Griffith. The swim team under the coaching of Randy Carda did a fine job. We were a strong team but we were small so we didn ' t do to well. Not enough people for all the events , commented the coach Randy Carda. 1. Others even thought that the students refinished the furniture. Corona was outstanding, and we were proud to be represented by Keith Bolock (Philadelphia Low Boy Mediterranean desk, 1st nation Stanley Tool design), Greg Pope (Sabot sailboat), Ken Jose (camper), and Mike Cruz (hutch). 1. Jim Buechler kept up a steady par throughout his season.
