GANESH A, 24-12. . . with Ganesha leading 12- 0 early in the game things looked down for the Panthers, and yet. . . with an outstanding defensive performance Ganesha’s act was finished. After Corona’s opening touchdown by Keeter and Bolock, Jacobs recovered on the Ganesha 32 and on fourth down Corona moved again with Turner hitting Blankenship. Wilkerson made his second conversion and Corona was in the lead. Corona stole the ball again in the second half- scoring twice with a well run offense. With Wilkerson’s 28 yard field goal the score was brought to 24-12. Hrachiar and Busby, playing key roles in the defensive kept the Giants down, for victory in the season opener. SEPTEM BER 27 CORONA VS. APPLE VALLEY.39-0. . . Running a new backfield Corona gained 329 yards to topple Apple V alley. Alfredo Casillas lead the Panthers with 142 yards, including a 47 yard run in the third quarter. Sophomore Greg Pope followed with 121 yards and four touchdowns. It was Corona’s ball game both defensively and in the offensive giving the home crowd something to shout about. I. Dan Carr and Chuck Turner rush Ganesha back 2. POLY, 0-16: The Defensively strong Poly Bears shocked the Panthers in their league opener. On two occasions Corona had the ball in Poly territory, at the end of the first half on a first down Corona had three incomplete passes, and then an interception. Later the Panther’s took the Poly kick off driving 43 yards only to again have an interception blanket a hopeful touchdown. Poly got the breaks and a mistimed fumble. They Won. OCTOBER 11: CORONA VS. COLTON, 6- 26: Traveling to Colton, the Panthers successfully stopped star Ted Smith, but Nunn and Staff surprised our offense totaling an impressive list of gains. W ' ith minutes remaining Rick Wilkerson intercepted a lateral at the 27 and put the Panthers on the scoreboard. Losing the extra point, the gun found Corona on the bottom of the score. 1. Alfredo Cassilas comes around left end for a first down. 2. Greg Pope is brought down during 3rd down. 27 OCTOBER 10: COLTON-CROSS COUNTRY, The Corona-Colton cross country meet was a critical test for Coma’s runners. Never before in Ivy League history had Corona defeated the Yellow Jackets. The victory was a positive confirmation of strength for Corona. I hough the team members were determined to do their best, many silently doubted that would be enough. The edge they needed came in the form of three hundred enthusiastic students, parents and teachers, including the varsity football team and pep squad. The varsity led by Rick McLaughlin and the J.V.’s swept the Colton harriers right off the track. I he tremendous performance of tbe Panther runners, as well as the long overdue acknowledgement of Cross Country prominence made Coach List and his team very proud, and rightly so. 1. Al Sepulveda 2. It was a time when Freedom to be Weird was shouted from the podiums and echoed throughout the campus. The candidates assembly was the ultimate in obscurity. The theme of Great Motion Pictures brought among other things a two hundred and ten pound Fairy Godmother in the form of Rocky Hrachiar. The Wizard of Oz will never be the same to us after seeing Tarlene Werdon as Dorothy and her teeny tiny Todo. Quieting the whole scene down was a “Lonesome Cowboy” by the name of Perry Keeter singing a soft country song. Of course, there were the formally gowned nominees. They reminded us that the assembly wasn’t merely another episode of Fractured Fairy Tales, but rather the presentation of the girls we would choose our Homecoming Queen from. 1. If that wasn’t enough there were the many hysterical outbursts from the girls chosen for court, whose shreiks and wild c rying dared to silence the Jazz Ensemble! RAMONA, 0-0 The Panther defense held Ramona to an unimpressive list of gains, but failure to build on three opportunities to score kept the Panthers from their first Ivy League win. It was Homecoming. The week was filled with many events following the “Great Motion Pictures” theme. A movie star slave sale starring the mighty Lettermen. Ben Hur wheel barrow, I mean chariot races with winners Mark Chiarto and Steve Radcliff. Students used the Movie Star dress up day to impersonate their favorite movie star characters. On Horror Films day, creepy ghosties and ghoulies drifted on our campus. Long skirts, pony tails, bobby sox, cuffed up levis, slicked back hair, leather jackets and a fifties sock hop allowed us to express ourselves to the tunes of American Graff itti, Elvis, and Chubby Checker. The Great Motion Pictures” theme was carried through the Homecoming Parade. This parade was the biggest Corona High has ever had. Clubs and classes participated with floats and marching units. The Proud Panther Band marched and the 1974 Homecoming Court was introduced. Later the Corona Panthers beat the San Bernardino Cardinals 14-0 in a great Homecoming Game. During the halftime the new 1974 Homecoming Queen was announced amid tears and laughter. She wa s crowned by Cathy Koutroulis at the Letterman’s Ball. I. Rick Wilkerson, Corky Hazle2. Later Hrachiar struck the Huskie quarterback and the pitch went into the end zone where Ball recovered it for the second Panther touchdown. Things calmed down for the remainder of the first half with the period ending at 13-3. The second half started slow for the Panthers but ended with Turner going over after a 19 yard drive. Then in the final minutes, a 22 yard pass to Dan May led the drive to put May over from 14 yards. Wilkerson’s point ended the scoring. Donna and Robert Hicks 5. Kim Johns X C 5 97 Fantastic is one of the few words that describe Corona ' s 1974 Cross Country season. They finished with an impressive dual meet overall score of Varsity 8-0, Junior Varsity 8-0 and Sophomore 7-1, and that was followed by a finale of the Ivy League Championship. Four Corona runners were named all Ivy League, Rick McLaughlin 2nd, Danny Barton 4th, Robert Arguelles 6th, Greg Fritz 10th. If one believes it was only determination that made Corona’s team Ivy League Champions, he only sees a partial picture of the Cross Country runners. To completely understand the success of the team one must consider their pride, stamina and willingness to work. Over the summer, under the direction of Coach Newton four boys ran 1000 miles and nine others ran 500 miles. Coach List was ecstatic about the first Ivy League Championship in four years. He felt that one of the reasons Corona did so well was because of the teams ‘great attitude’. A cross country runner has many long lonely miles of preparation to run a relatively short race with no stadium full of cheering fans or pep band. This year was special, for the first time there was student participation in the crowd, Coach List felt the boys “really appreciated it and performed even better.’’ Previously only the coaches and a few people, like the bus driver, even saw the meets. These groups were very busy in fund raising and performances. The bake sale, car wash, and light bulb sale helped raise money to buy new outfits for the Choir in addition to the regular choir robes. T he Choir and Madrigals performed in a variety of places. During the Christmas season they went out spreading the Christmas cheer. The Choir sang at the Methodist Church while the Madrigals went to Coronita Elementary, Garretson Elementary, the Congregational Church, Tyler Mall and a Madrigal Festival at R.C.C. Second semester was busier yet for both groups. Special Festival s for both choir and Madrigals started around March. Some of these were held at Riverside Poly and Ramona. M9KGTMLL TedMS The Panther Girls’ Basketball team put in a good effort for their first time in league. The main problem was the other teams had been in league for seven years, thus having more experience. Another point was height. The average height of the other teams was always a couple of inches taller than our girls. But our girls faced these obstacles and worked hard giving their opponents stiff competition. Their best game according to Coach Chitwood was against Colton, 40-42. They made their best team effort and really played well. They lost but they made those Colton girls sweat it for awhile. Two of the girls that were really great on the team were Terri Smith and Margret Yancu. Terri handled the ball real well and maneuvered it on the court. They started the season off by winning their two pre-league meets against Apple Valley and cross-town rival Norco. The team participated in the Palm Springs Relays, an invitational competition and placed second in a field of six teams. The coaches, List, Blankenship, and Newton, were confident in the Panthers ability and named a few outstanding team members: Outstanding distance runners-Dan Barton, Rick McLaughlin, Joe Velasques, Gary Peterson, and Robert Arguelles. The top notch sprinters were Ryan Hathaway, Ron Cunningham, Greg Petties, ' Pony Davila and Greg Schmidt. In the field events outstanding Panthers were Perry Keeter, shot put; Craig Stuart, high jump and long jump; Rick Gillmaster, pole vault; and Rory Davis, pole vault and high jump. Fine hurdlers were Brad Blankenship and Carl Sparlin. The highlight of the track season came when the team co-sponsored the Corona-Norco Relays with the Norco team. I. Under the coaching of Coaches Bowers, Chitwood, Sherman, and associates the girls found themselves in their second year of active competition. And with the second year came CIF recognition of league competition, new ratings and rulings, addition of the badminton squad, matching uniforms, (whatever happened to those charming feminine grey bloomers mother wore), plus development of style and accomplishment in competition. Fielding teams in Volleyball, tennis, badminton, softball, track, gymnastics, basketball, and swimming the year’s schedule kept a rapid pace throughout. In volleyball, Coach Bower’s girls ended the season third in league competition. In tennis Cindy Odgen led her team mates to an impressive sixth place ranking out of an eighteen school division. In spring, as things often do, the pace became even more rapid for the east locker room gang; as badminton birds found their nest in league play. Softball, track, gymnastics and swimming all forged forward into a full season. Coach Bowers found spring practice with a large turnout for a successful softball season. Under Coach Doug Crow the track women easily defeated Don Lugo 77-4, and Apple Valley 65-26, and as enthusiasm built so did the season. In gymnastics, the professional attitudes and accomplishments of Coach Kathy Trott developed a finer sense of showmanship and performance in her athletes. In competition Linda WAde, Stephanie Snyder, Diane Wilson, and Delite Emery among others, showed much improvement over previous performance. A second year, development. . . and yet. . . success. I.
