Well now we know—29-0. It’s hard to whip the crowd into a frenzy when there’s really no contest, but Corona fans went home content anyway. The running game won it, since no passes were completed, and the defense kept Moreno Valley out of the endzone. Can’t Complain. 1. Tony Davilla, Gary Peterson. 2. Denise Tronti, Francis Wahington. 3. SEPTEMBER 21-24: MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL The 1972-73 Corona High Jazz Ensemble returned to Monterey as the California Honorary High School Band. As last April’s state champions they were not eligible for this year’s competition. Great names in jazz Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Bo Diddly appeared at the three-day festival. Due to the lack of legitiment competitive circumstances the mood of the trip was needless to say “RELAXED” with the adventures of Sheriff Bill and Gang. 1 Blake Gardner. 2. Jim Dell. 3. Steve Day ran in for the only touchdown midway into the fourth quarter to make the final score 14 to 6. 1. Karen Shrempp, Sherri Keller, Holly Zehnder. 2. Bobby Turner cuts back to avoid Poly defense. OCTOBER 5: Corona vs. John Glenn: Well, Corona got their “stuff” together and walked all over John Glenn to a score of 41-3. By “stuff” it is meant that they figured out what they had done right and what they had done wrong before, and then did the “right” ones and came out on top. Here we go again. 3. Through seeking the opinions of the A.S. B. and finding out its wants, student officers addressed themselves to problems and questions concerning the school. The offense just kept gravitating towards the end .one and Notre Dame didn’t feel like getting in the way. 28-0 at the half, Corona still kept up the pace ’til the end of the game except for a lapse early in the 4th allowing Notre Dame to get their only 6pts. of the evening. How did they do this? Wellll. . . some people played with funny things that had strings, one sang and wore funny shoes, and one did nothing but beat sticks on round things. What does this do to some people? Wellll. . . some tap their feet, others sway to and fro, and some even get up and gyrate their bodies—this is called dance. Regardless of the “strange” things people do when they are excited, “Shuffle” was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended either at school or at the night concert. 1. The Panther defense held well except for one slip late in the first quarter allowing San Bernardini to score six points. Corona managed to get the lead back by scoring seven in the third, but a Cardinal interception late in the game gave them the victory. All of this was deleterious to the happiness of the few fans there. 1. Cathy Bain 2. John Munoz 3. Coach Robles and Nixon. 113 we won the whole thing . . . NOVEMBER 10: LESTER OAKS MEMORIAL BAND REVIEW: They went in long yellow buses, with shoe polish, band mothers, hair pins, and practice. With one long and four short blasts, they all stepped off, each left foot the same as all the others. And when they again boarded the long yellow buses they were the Proud Panther Band. They had done what they went to do ... . Win. 114 r 1 i WWmlmBr-r ■ A ■ -Hk i 1 Jr ■J9 . H k i “Tomorrowland,” they said. Translated into colors, read “silver and green.” From this, the students, rushing about, conceived of fun and funny things to do to celebrate this thing they call “Homecoming.” Silly things were done by few and a good time was had by all. A success, of course. All was climaxed by the game. They came in buses to meet us. And the crowd roared. They scored, twice, and the crowd sighed. We scored, once, and the crowd roared and so it went. It rained but we kept scoring, and the crowd roared, we had won. Somewhere in the middle, amidst crying and cheering, Cathy Koutroulis, a very pretty young lady, was declared queen, making the week seem complete. 1. Gloria Bonilla and Antoinette DeLeo 2. Nine times the men ran about on the field, in strange and colorful garb, moving a small oblong ball towards one end or the other. And eachtime they went home satisfied, having expended all their energy, and, more often than not, victorious. And the crowd cheered . . . It started out very nicely with a neat trouncing of Moreno Valley, and after a negligible loss to Poly, three more strong victories. Notre Dame was the most notable of the three, as the panthers rolled easily by and ended up with a 55-6 win. A few disappointments followed by Corona bounced back in the. final game against Colton, generally considered an upset. The sophomores, being relatively new at this idea of bumping-into-others-and-moving- the-brown ball-forward did not fare so well. Eight times they tried and twice they were successful, and once moderately so, pulling out a tie. Paradoxically, their last game, a 13- 6 loss to San Bernardino was judged the best of their efforts by Coach Fritz, so the season ended on a positive note. And again this year a shower of awards descended on worthy players. Eight varsity players made all-league: Rick Carr, Perry Keeter, Marty Hrachiar, and Larry Hinojos; first team, while Anthony Garcia, Fred Lopez, Keith McDaniels, and Rick Wilkerson were chosen for the second team. Team honors went to Larry Hinojos as Captain and defensive back of the year and Bob Turner as offensive back. Carlos Reynoso and Perry Keeter were awarded defensive and offensive linemen, respectively. The ’most inspirational player’ award went to Keith McDaniel, while Tony Garcia received the Mr. Hustle’ award. Rick Carr was named the team’s most valuable player. 136 SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL: (Row 1 left-right): Jim Gagner, halfback; Joe Flores, halfback; Isaac Rodriquez, running back; George Mullowoey, left guard; Ralph Jager, corner back; Tony Koutroulis, corner back, Jeff Holden, line-backer. The Varsity team recorded a 6 win 2 loss season while the Junior Varsity team finished 7-1. One of the Varsity losses was to Colton the league champs and the other was to Palm Springs the runner up. This was the year of records as eight individuals ran the two mile course in the 10:00 minute range, this was the most outstanding performance in the last six years. Two new school records were also set, a Jr. Class record of 10:10 by Henry Juarez and a Soph. Class record of 10:20 by Danny Barton. With 18 of the 22 runners returning next year it should be a big year. Encountering only a minimum of opposition, they scored seven times, kicking the little round ball in the big cloth net. Gladstone rarely made it downfield and never could score. And Matysak came through in the last two seconds to supply it. Sure would have saved a lot of near hysteria and sore throats of there had been a little wider margin. But then, there’s always something to be said for suspense. It had been the other way around the time before, so revenge was sweet, and Corona fans left for home (?) hoarse, but content. The more athletically oriented ladies on campus weren’t content to leave not-so-well enough alone, and so they grouped and regrouped and then ran out onto the football field for a fun-filled afternoon of bumping and grinding, athletically speaking of course. Meanwhile, back on the sidelines, their male counterparts bounced up and down pumping spirit into the frenzied crowd. At any rate when the dust had settled, the seniors emerged victorious by a score of 6-0. And that, as they say, was that. Please hum the alma mater on your way to lunch, folks. 1. But in our hearts we knew we were right . . .
