The Panthers opened up at home against Moreno Valley and powered their way to a 26-6 victory. Showing off the Panthers new wishbone offense, Bob Turner. Jim Cleveland, Anthony Garcia and Rick Carr ground out 257 yards and 3 touchdowns to charge the team onto victory. Corona then traveled to Kennedy High in Barstow. After two quick scores in the first quarter, the stunned Panthers scored to make it 13-7, but Kennedy proved too much for the Panthers, beating them 26-7. After their setback at Kennedy, the determined Panthers came home to beat John Glenn 14-13. Both teams scored touchdowns knotting the score at 7-7 at half. After an exchange of punts, the Panthers roared down to the nine where Bob Turner scrambled for his second touchdown from there. Kirk Lewis kicked the extra point which proved to be the decisive point. The defense, led by Ken Petticolas, did a fine job to preserve the win for the Panthers. Notre Dame was Corona’s next opponent. The teams looked as though they were going to be tied at half. With minutes remaining. Bob Diaz intercepted a pass and ran it back 74 yards for a touchdown. The inspired Panthers came out after the half and stopped Notre Dame cold until the final minutes of the game when Notre Dame scored again. The final score 27-14. Corona opened league against Colton the following week. Colton held the Panther offense in check for most of the first quarter. Corona then took to the air behind the passing of Bob Turner to Fred Lopez combination that took the Panthers to victory. Meanwhile, the defense with such notables as Larry Hinojos, Rick Wilkerson, Randy Leonti, Kirk Lewis, Jim Turner, Carlos Reynoso, and David Peronto held the Yellowjackets in check for the shutout. Corona played the Rubidoux Falcons away for their next league. The offense scored 21 big points in the first half behind the blocking of their offensive line. With tackles Bob Velker and Sam Westover, guards J im T urner and Dave Peronto, and center Ken Dorgone, the Panthers were able to control the ball for the first half. The Panthers suffered a letdown after the first half but hung on to win 27-21. Corona returned home to play Norte Vista and the arm of Bobby Sayers. The offensive backs ran right through the defense of Norte Vista all night. Meanwhile, the defensive line of Mark Mejia, Mark Lohuis, Carlos Reynoso, Dave Peronto and Jim Turner kept a steady rush on Bobby Sayers. The Panthers won decisively 32-14. In what was billed as the game of the year Corona and North met head-on at U.C.R. It was probably the best game for Corona as both the defense and offense played inspired games. Dave Peronto will always be remembered for his three blocked punts that set up three Corona touchdowns and the 28-10 victory. I he victory eventually put Corona in the C.I.F . playoffs. The celebration after the North game didn ' t last very long. The Panthers were to battle San Berdoo for the league championship. If Corona won, we would be the champs - if we lost there would be a three way tie for first. The Panthers fought long and hard, but the tough Cardinal defense allowed but one score for Corona. San Bernardino scored twice and held on to a hard fought victory and a part of a championship. But it was on to C.I.F. for Corona, North, and San Bernardino. Corona played Walnut at Mt. Sac for the right to advance in the playoffs. Walnut’s big gun was Ron Himes, the quarterback, the second leading passer in CJ.F. history. But Corona was determined to stop him. They did for the first half and the Panthers went in at halftime with a hard fought 7-6 lead. After the hajf, Himes and Company came out throwing and threw a touchdown pass to end Craig Anderson. After stopping Corona at their own five. Walnut again scored on a 73 yard pass from Himes to Anderson. Corona fought valiantly but couldn’t pull it out. The final gun sounded and it was all over. The turning point in the third game came when Tim Busby completed a 26 yard pass from Kenny Shea to make a touch down. Manny Gallegos kicked the point after touchdown and brought the win to a total of 9-7. The Panthers found the fourth game much easier and won 20-6 over Notre Dame. Manny Gallegos and Kenny Shea made the touchdowns. With many players sidelined because of injuries, the sophomores traveled to Hemet and came up on the short end of a 18-6 score. Phil Urbina scored the only Corona touchdown on an right yard kickoff return. After a work off. the Panthers went to Riverside to play Poly High. Between Jo-Jo Artega blocking two punts, Mark Ludwin returning a 70 yard pass interception for a touchdown, and two long passes from Phil Nelson to Kenny Shea Corona romped 26-0 over Poly High.
