Nash 7 2 3 It was great anyway Well so the kids didn’t win the world’s jazz championship after all. Too bad! But they were great in any event, and all these other hot horn tooters better watch out for our gang next time! Rickson’s Raiders have brought a modest amount of fame and a great deal of honor to our community. They have demonstrated skill above almost all others, they have been modest in victory and gracious in defeat, a defeat at Montreaux, Switzerland, by another fine high school band from San Leandro. The two bands have been locked in immensely tight competition for two years. And one of the greatest things our kids and Roger Rickson did for us was uniting our community in a fund drive seeking a seemingly impossible $25,000 to send them abroad. They captured our imagination, and we got the job done. It was a darned good investment, and don’t ever forget it! 1. Mr. Rickson directing a Montreaux practice session. 2. World’s best trombones. 3. Traveling to Barstow and coming home in defeat, the J.V.’s picked up by beating Pioneer and Norco. In League play, Corona lost its opener to San Bernardino by the score of 12-14. Still down from the San Bernardino game and behind 6-0 with 2 minutes left, the J.V.’s came on the tie 6-6 with Colton. Spirits high the J. V.-s went on to defeat Rubidoux and Norte Vista. Going into the last game with North, Corona was once again playing for the Ivy League Championship. Unfortunately they lost their bid to North by a score of 28-12. Coach Holden said, “We had a good team and with a few breaks, we could have had a 7-2 record instead of 5-3-1.” Coach went on to say “that the league was evenly matched and pointed out that San Bernardino who won over Corona also defeated North.” Players who did a good job this season were Quarterback Cliff House; Richard Freeman, Middle Line Backer; Rick Carr, a sophomore running back; Fred Lopez, pass receiver and leading scorer. When Head Coach Marshal N ixon was asked for highlights of the year, he immediately said, “Pioneer and North, outstanding only because they spoiled an otherwise fantastic season.” Coach Nixon also mentioned good team efforts against Norco and Rubidoux (28-14 and 35-7, respectively). Our first two games were won on our own field against teams from Palm Springs and Barstow. We then traveled to Whittier to take on the Pioneer Titans who had just dropped from a 4-A classification. Although we gained 32 more yards than Pioneer, we were defeated by 7 points. The traditional tangle with Norco High was won 28-14 in the rain. We opened league play against the San Bernardino Cardinals on October 15, and fought to a 14-14 tie. Fans, however, resented the fact that San Berdoo’s defense was pulled off the field with four seconds left on the clock and Corona on their 13 yard line. We met Colton, last year’s Ivy League Champions, on October 28 without our starting quarterback John McGaugh. Bobby Turner then proceeded to pass us to a 32-6 win over the Yellow Jackets. The Rubidoux Falcons met defeat 35-7 on the Panther home field. Don Luginbill gained an outstanding 264 yards for the Panther defense in yards gained. On November 12 Corona traveled to R.C.C.’s Wheelock Field to play the Norte Vista Braves. Defeating them 35-14, hopes rose for continued success against North for Homecoming and the league title. 112 Don Luginbill rated most valuable That game was surely a heart¬ breaking one as we ended the season 3-1 -1, losing to the Huskies by 4 points. Outstanding among the Panthers, Donny Luginbill was bestowed with honors for his prowess as a running back. Among them were; CIF Second Team, Most Valuable Player of Riverside County, Offensive Player of the Year for Ivy League, and Fi rst Team Ivy League. Also named on the First Team were Jim Turner, Mike Howell, Ed Bolin, John McGaugh, and Tony Kirkpatrick; Ed Bolin and Ken Petticolas were named to the Ivy League defensive team. The Grand Champion Jazz Ensemble and Stage Band are two of the most active, dedicated groups on campus. Their busy second semester festival schedule was preceded by long hours of practicing and creating the music that won them the championship at the 1971 Reno Jazz Festival. This years’ season began with both groups winning second place ratings at the February 26th Chaffey College Festival. March 1 the groups presented the Chamber of Commerce sponsored concert to an enthusiastic community and campus. Following the fund raising concert, the jazz ensemble’s Reno tour included several enroute concerts, plus the Reno festival competition. March 24 the Ensemble performed in the Pacific Coast Jazz Festival at San Fernando Valley State. This festival was followed by the April 8 festival at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. Again on April 21 the bands and director Roger Rickson, hosted the Corona Jazz Festival and concert. Bands from the southern California area flooded the campus, providing the student body and community with a day of enjoyment and relaxation. The year was brought to an exciting climax with the Jazz Ensemble’s performance at the June 3 Monterey Jazz Festival. Swimming Team Sparked by an undefeated season at mid-point the Panther swimming team showed promise of one of the best season records in school history. Greg Scott, Hugh Ibbetson, Craig Shick, and Peter Sheppard were big point getters during the year. Scott was the most versatile, being strong in all four competitive strokes, while the other three held strong in an individual stroke. During league meets Ibbetson won a crucial race, 200 free-syle, which helped Corona tie a strong North team at mid-season. Corona’s main disadvantage was lack of numbers, but they were strongly increased by the enthusiasm of Coach Ryan. 1. David Swink waits for results in meet against Rubidoux. 2. Coach Ryan. 3. Students have an opportunity to choose the type of class that they would like to observe, giving them first hand experience of the career of their choice. Also, many students are given the opportunity to take over an actual class, performing demonstrations and techniques. The United Mexican American Students have organized and conduct a tutorial program for junior high students at Auburndale. The program is designed to help students who are having trouble with reading, math and English subjects. 1. Cheri Huckabone, F.T. A. 2. Denise Voge, F.T. A. 3. Susan Van Voorhis, F.T. A. 4.
