After-dinner activities included volleyball, and a special brand of Sophomore entertainment (see photo above), which included unrolling toilet paper and pushing peanuts (both relays utilizing the nose for such purposes), and running around the gym singing, Mickey Mouse. Our athletic events showed once again the strength and courage of our men. Both cross country and football exposed our outstanding athletes to Panther ac¬ claim and personal satisfaction. To avoid running the new freeway in El Cerrito, cross country meets consisted of a two mile run about campus. Football Season games were the focus of many lives this year. What was it composed of? A clack of shoulder pads, shouts of Hustle! and Go Headhunters! , a three foot pile of bodies, jerseys, helmets, and spiked shoes, under which laid one football; there were pretty girls in bouncy dresses, and tall, white, furry hats under which there sounded a horn, or boomed a drum; there were exhausted, panting men with contorted faces; and for others, there were tense moments while waiting for a gun to sound when they would com- mense a fast two mile trek up hill, down slopes. 39 Corona High Panther Band go into formation during half-time activities. Our campus was colored with bright striped sombreros, flowered hats, headgear of cowboys and Indians, stocking caps, and an occasional paper bag. Thursday we had our first annual Powder Puff Football Game-the Senior girls versus the Junior and Sophomore girls. Just for the occasion, the boys consented to become yell and song leaders, rousing the crowd into fits of spirit.. .the heightof laughter.. .? In spite of the incredible display of skill and spirit the score at the close of the game remained tied 0-0. After the game class competition continued with the class Tug of War beginning with the Junior team pitted against the Sophomore team. Unfortunately the rope used for the occasion held up for only a few tugs; and regardless of the efforts to reinforce the rope it continued to break. The Tug of War ended with a snap.. .The class competition rally terminated with a fine display of good sportsmanship! The three class presidents participated in the Interclass Tricycle Race. Senior class president Jonathan Vaughn was appropriately victorious, dashing over the finish line carrying his tricycle over his head far ahead of Sophomore president Alan Casagrande who was still pedaling. THE ROYAL COURT: Tom Marvick escorting Ann Luginbill, Jim Nealey escorting Mary Nastronero, Susan Ritter, escorted by Randy Samstag, Queen Miki Bernal, escorted by Bill Worrell, Donna Butterfield, escorted by Bob Warren, Sharon Graves, escorted by Alan Last, Carol Wadenius, escorted by Jerry McDaniel. Thursday night every loyal class member folded tissue paper, cut chicken wire, stepped on nails, and slept in corners in order to insure the completion of the floats for competition the following day. Friday afternoon during the combination Float and Pep Rally the floats were judged. The Senior entry Sportsmanship Makes the World go ' Round took first place; the Key Club float The Best Bet took second prize; third prize went to the Junior entry Flappiness is Haunting the Huskies. Friday evening the downtown parade was en- thusiastical ly received by the members of the community. The Homecoming candidates riding in convertibles, the Corona Panther Band, and the floats took part in half-time activities. Miki Bernal was crowned Home¬ coming Queen of the school year 1965-1966. The Homecoming game with John North started and ended with spirit. The last half of the game Corona Panthers scored a three-point field goal bringing the final score to 3-0. The evening ended with the Homecoming Sock-Hop following the game. The theme Carousel was effectively carried out in the colorful decorations: carousel horses prancing around the gym and a bright canopy over the throne . Homecoming Week was a success!!! HI-JINX BALL 64 This year the semi-formal affair glittered under the theme of Somewhere in My Heart. Campus couples danced under gay mobils of hearts and cupids. At the hour of ten, chair¬ men, Martha Nastronero and Elsa Galavan presented the 1966 Hi-Jinks court. One by one the court in long white gowns, were escorted to the royal throne at the front of the star room. As the ninth princess reached the front, Elsa Galavan announced Queen of Hi-Jinks 1966, Sharon Graves. Sharon then knelt before Miss Daveta Pixly, Queen of Hi-Jinks 1965 to receive her crown. As queen, Sharon ' s first duty was to lead her court in the traditional Black Hawk Waltz. Couples danced until the Cinderella hour of twelve and the reign of another queen was begun. Dazzled dancers watch the Queen and her Court after the majestic presentation of the girls. Next to come- the Black Hawk Waltz. Queen Sharon danced and danced and danced. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL Mr. Wi Ikerson, Coach The Bee football team showed exceptional ability defensively this year. Their team ' s fighting spirit helped fulfill the hopes of cheerleaders, rooters, and coach¬ es; they tied for third in the IVY League finals. Coach Eugene Lowry felt that the team was a fine group of men who did an excellent job defensively and would have been equally as effective offensively had they not had trouble with quarter¬ backs. The finest Bee jerseymen were recognized by the team-members them¬ selves. George Santos was honored as Most Inspirational, Jim Ganahl was Mr. Hustle, and Jeff Clark as Honorary Captain. Secretary John Thayer A.S.B. Vice-President ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY R. Samstag, Activity Commissioner; J. Huffman, Pep Commissioner; J. Wiles, Parliamen¬ tarian; E. Lowe, Publicity Commissioner. The Executive Council is one of the finest groups on cam¬ pus. It is a group of students who are truly interested in an all-round and continual improvement of CHS. One outstanding characteristic of their administration is the endeavor to gain better communication with the Asso¬ ciated Student Body. They introduced the idea of a reg¬ ular bulletin over the public address system to inform stu¬ dents of current executive business; they published a Government Box in the newspaper, the Ko-Hi-Nur, for the same purpose; also, the council made it very easy for any interested student to visit and discuss an import¬ ant measure, if he so desired. Other ideas instigated by the 1 965-66 Executive Counci I were the building of a Panther Statue, a Nominating Convention for the election of ASB officers, (and) the extension of interesting and broadening student assemblies. 103 REPRESENTATIVE AND INTER-CLUB COUNCILS The Representative Council is a group which has been increasingly active this year due to the added function in student affairs that it has possessed under our two-year-old ASB Constitution. The group has functioned much like the United States Senate. It consists of one representative from each orientation class and is presided over by ASB Vice President, and President of the Representative Council, John Thayer. The organization met regularly once a month. It held hearings for suggestions and proposals from the students and from the Executive Council on student affairs, and then voted on them. The students also discussed and formulated ideas to be sent to the ASB and Executive Council on various matters. Those students who regularly took part in the Representative Council demonstrated their own civic-mindedness while realizing the council as an im¬ portant factor in student government. The Inter-Club Council is another group which furthers the students ' part in governing themselves. Made up of the presidents of every chartered campus organization the council forms a representative unit which acts in the interest of the smaller groups within the student body. Mark Siegers, its popular Pres¬ ident, kept the group organized and functioning well through the hurricanes of the ASB Ball and the student magazine sales which earned money for the Panther Statue. Once again in student government, a small agency played a vital part in making possible the great progress at CHS of the year 1965-66. FRONT ROW: M. Siegers, President of Interclub Council; P. The scholars plan field trips each year which are taken only if the selected place is not too expensive nor too far away. This year the club hoped to visit the L.A. County Museum. Randy Jones, President, worked closely with Mrs. Wynne to head the club. Membership requirements include having a minimum of ten academic credits at semester report card time. Three credits are given for an A , one for a B , and one for being a cheerleader or club president. The Club is affiliated with the Cali¬ fornia Scholastic Federation which entitles members to apply for special scholarships spon¬ sored by the organization, and to send representatives to the Federation activities. They functioned in the distribution of Christmas Baskets to needy families, a Pop Bottle Drive, a Pancake Breakfast, the selling of Panther book covers, ushering at school assemblies, and helping the welfare committee in Operations Soap and Cookies. In addition, the Key Club float captured second place at the Homecoming rally. Mr. Diers and Mr. Husson may be credited with sponsoring such a fine group. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE Eneas Benute The American Field Service is a national organization that is finding increasing international support. Its func¬ tion is to increase understanding among all peoples by sponsoring an exchange of foreign and American students. The AFS found its way to Corona and established a local chapter. As a result of these endeavors. Corona had two fine students come to live here for a year. They were Ulla Hotinen from Helsinki, Finland, and Eneas Benute from Sao Paulo, Brazil. In the interest of our foreign students, CHS students had established an AFS Club on campus to help soften the transition between school lives, and to create student interest and support for the exchange program. If anyone could help soften anyone ' s life, it was Pam Little, Pres¬ ident of the club. With her understanding and the help of Mr. Knilans and Mr. Hart, the club sponsors, the club ' s goals were fulfilled. Some AFS projects were part of the Christmas Assembly at which Ulla and Eneas were given, as a gift, a telephone call to anywhere in the world (usually home), an International Week highlighted by the selling of shares in the American Field Service, and a float honoring Ulla and Eneas in the Homecoming Parade. 108 V. Campus rallies saw the team in school uni¬ form of red and gold. Their major campus ac¬ tivities are the halftime performances during football season. Since their debut on Oct. 1 the drill team has participated in numerous parades. Among them the Long Beach Band Review and Corona ' s St. Patrick ' s Day Pa¬ rade, where they placed second in their division. The drill team after one year have become a campus institution. Charter mem¬ bers can be proud of their lines of maroon and white. The purpose of the Corona Senior High Cadet Corps is to de¬ velop good capable leaders and to give experience to these young men who are interested in a military career. The bright yellow helmets could be seen providing many services for the panther campus and community throughout the school year. Under the leadership of Mr. Holden the Corps provided guards and aids at sporting events, the homecoming parade and the annual band jamboree. During the spring months many mem¬ bers assisted in setting up the field for the track events. It was organized as an informal group of students interested in science— in talking with scientifical ly oriented men and women, in visiting PhyBi Scientifically founded institutions, in seeing educational films, slides and even demonstrations of actual equipment used in areas of en¬ deavor selected by the members. There were no membership requirements; the club was open to the inspiration of the moment of its members or the dogged determination of regular members devoted to the promotion of a scientific society. Drama Club got off to a slow start this year, reorganizing during the first of second se¬ mester with Cora Van Geeloof leading the troops. With the production of the all¬ school play The Mouse That Roared the drama club membership had a busy semester of activity. Re-stretching flats and sizing canvas, mixing paint, hammering thumbs, finding props, and pulling curtain became mighty activities for hearty stage crews. Play try-outs ended in Imagine Me in a play and I made it and My talent.. .a promptor. Practice heard screams of horror and delight from sponsor-director, Mr. Neuman. Opening night and all jitters faded to success, and first nighters. 126 FIRST ROW: Mr. Halperin, S. Meier, D. Clark, K. McWilliams, J. Stal¬ lings, C. Stewart, L. Citron, L. Thatcher, P. Simpson, T. This year Mr. Halperin, his first on campus, began the impressive A Cappella choir and the honored Madrigal Singers. These groups along with the Boys ' and Girls ' Glee put in many long hours of rehearsal and performance during the school year. 127 FIRST ROW: Mr. Halperin, M. Enyart, J. Veach, M. Siegers, T. BOYS ' GLEE CLUB The new A Cappella choir with Margie Bernards and Tim Monich as accompanists gave an impressive performance at the December ' s Christmas concert. The choir followed the December concert with assemblies before community and school groups. In April the choir was selected to perform before the Southern California Music Association Choral festi¬ val in Burbank. The music department ' s Spring Concert, bac¬ calaureate, finished out a year of performance and excellence. The Madrigals, the vocal honor group on campus, is composed of the top voices from the A Cappella Choir. This group, specializing in music of the 16th and 17th centuries sang be¬ fore such groups as the Triple M Women ' s Club, Kiwanis Club, Peppermint Ridge Volunteers, Pantherette Fashion Show, and the Rotary Club. In addition the elegantly gowned, burgundy satin, and suited Madrigals sang at the Fontana California Music Association Festival and the campus spring music con¬ cert. The Madrigals have begun a tradition of fine perform¬ ance of late Renaissance and Baroque music that both the com¬ munity and campus have received with enthusiasm. The Glee Club activities were highlighted by the Boys ' Glee Club performance at the Los Angeles Festival of the Southern California Vocal Music Association. The Boys ' Glee sang at the A.F.S. assembly on campus, presenting songs from many nations. Both clubs gave fine performances at the Christmas and Spring campus Music Concerts. The hours that these young men and women put into their music were certainly worth while. At performances, one could hear remarks that make every Panther proud to know the Mr. Flalperin ' s groups belong to CHS. Choir Director: Mr. Stuart Halperin MADRIGAL SINGERS FIRST ROW: J. Lowe, M. Owens. r 130 Listening to, keeping time with, or singing along with a band-a Panther Band-is an exciting experience. When you first sing On Corona at a football game, complete with shakeroos, or when you first hear the carols played at the Christmas Assembly or when you first hear, then see your band marching in a parade or when you first d a n c e to the music of the stage band-then you know that band music is for you-Panther Band Music, that is. Each of the four bands at C.H.S. have separate, but equally impressive activities. The Pep Band played Panther songs at nearly all football, and all home bas¬ ketball games. The eighty-member band played during half-time at home football games, along with its bright sign carriers, and newly formed drill team. BAND COUNCIL—SEATED: V. De Beal, Drum Major. F. Simons, Treasurer; J. Lynch, President; J. Lockwood, Vice-President; S. Pierce, Historian; R. Bane, Librarian. As well as hosting the Corona ' s Tenth Annual Band Jamboree, the MARCHING BAND participated in the Hawthorne Band Review, and the All-Western Band Review in Long Beach. The CHS CONCERT BAND started a new and enviable activity this year. In May, they went on a one day tour to three high schools to give a glimpse of the Panther music department and to present the Concert Band and the Stage Band. The Concert Band provided an enjoyable selection of carols at Christmas time. The STAGE BAND was a new addition to the CHS music depart¬ ment. It is a seventeen piece band designed to teach the stu¬ dents to play swing and popular music in the style of the ' big bands ' . They played at a dance sponsored by the High School Band Parents Association at the N.O.L.C. Club House. The band delighted Junior High Students with three assemblies at the respective schools. Our band ' s better than your band... 131 CONCERT BAND FIRST ROW: P. Schneider, J. Lynch, F. Simons, M. Marquez, V. De Beal. SECOND ROW: B. Cole, R. Bane, B. Wadenius. THIRD ROW: S. Moore, R. Only time can test the validity of the United States action and perhaps justify or find fault with our foreign policy. The world of science has expanded by leaps and bounds - especially in the field of space. One impressive event fur¬ thered the knowledge important in the future plans to reach the moon. Gemini VII space-craft with Frank Borman and James Lovell aboard completed suc¬ cessfully a rendezvous with Gemini VI which was flown by Wally Schirra. Pic¬ tures of this historic event were shot with a Hasselblad 70 mm camera on color |80 mm lens. The two ships a few feet of each other and flew in a nose-to-nose formation at an altitude of 1 85 miles attached by an umbilical cord. 3 H msmst 4 Astronauts James Lovell and Frank Bormon prepare for their 14-day space voyage. Trends and modes have also changed with the outlook of the U. S. citizen today. Americans have been besieged with new musical trends led by some of the foremost authorities in popu¬ lar music - teenagers themselves. Popular singers have included - Barbra Streisand, the Beatles, the Stones, popular duos of Peter and Gordon, Chad and Jeremy, also the Mamas and the Pa¬ pas, Bob Dillan, the Birds, the Turtles, and the Outsiders. 210 Shops are plundered during the Watts Riots, taking place during the summer of 1965. But teenagers in general should be given credit for influencing these changes. ZOOOOOOOOOOOM! Is it an oversized roller skate? A swollen lady bug? No! This year marked an exciting new trend of fashions. Compared with the fash¬ ions of twenty years ago there is an extremely noticeable difference. Ankle-length do-nut skirts have made way for short hip hugger skirts. Bobbie socks and saddle-shoes left tracks for Capezio boots and patterned socks and nylons. Bell bottoms in multi¬ colored flower prints became the mode. Paisley ties came back, along with wing tips, and shaggy jackets. New on the scene for girls, as well as boys, swim wear was bermuda length Jams in shocking colors. Twenty years ago permanent was the rage. Considering the casual look of today, the hair-dos are equally as casual. Everywhere, girls are adorned with long, straight tresses, or the short boyish bob look.
