Amid happiness and sorrow, success and failure, smiles and tears, friendships won and friendships lost, ltn : gers the memory of a teacher who helped us across the hazards and inspired us to greater heights. It is to him, Hubert Bynum, jolly, understanding, and sympathetic, that this vo- lume of the Coronal is sincerely and affectionately dedicated. 4 r HEME Imagination, desire, vitality, experiment, dreams; these are youth ' s contribution to progress. This is best exemplified by the Hot Rod,” the theme of our 1957 Coronal. Split manifolds, dual exhausts, shaved cylin- der heads, dual carburetors, and underslung bodies are a few of the many ideas of youth which have made the automobile what it is today. The Hot Rod is but a symbol of youth ' s ingenuity. It is conceivable that some of our own class will in some measure con- tribute to the advancement of music, science, industry or culture. The 1957 Coronal is a pictorial review of the activities of the past year. The students who took part in these events have displayed their abilities and leadership. It is expected that these qualities will carry over into their chosen fields and it is hoped that the Hot Rod symbol will spur them on to bigger and greater accomplishments. Besides giving their very successful class play, ' Junior Prom, and sponsoring the Junior- Senior Prom, they gave a really cute assembly and had a big skating party. The Class of 59 started out the year with a bang. They had a Bar BQ and a skating party. They also gave several short plays for the stu- dent body and sponsored a Sock Hop. 46 The Seniors of C. H. S. are the all im- portant engine of our hot rod. The Engine of the car supplies the powei; to go just as the Seniors supply the qo for our school. Hi Tri an active club. They spon- sored the annual Christmas Ball, gave parties for patients at the Naval Hosiptal and helped with many worthwhile activities. HI - Y The Hi-Y is a Non-Denomin- ational service club which is affiliated with the Y.M.C.A. This past year they have had varied meetings, per- formed many service pro- jects for the school and com- munity, and had outside ac- tivities. They had a very successful Christmas project, in which everyone in school took part. They also collected money for Care, Crusade and Freedom, Meals for Millions, and our adopted child Kaneko received presents for her birthday and at Christmas. Dalcamo. 127 $S FOOTBALL DANCE The highlight of the football sea- son was the crowning of Betty Hudson as Miss Football 1956” at the annual Miss Football Dance. 128 FOOTBALL ACTIVITIES The Bon Fire and Car Parade was really a big success this year and a lot of fun for all those who participated. Yells and songs were lead by our Cheerleaders. They also headed the Snake Dance which wove in and out between the three fires built by the Senior, Junior, and Sophomore classes. The annual af- fair got this year ' s Football Season off to a real peppy start. HALLO WEE DANCE Everyone had a swell time at the Halloween dance this year. There were quite a few booths for food and for games of various kinds. The Hi-Y sponsored the for- tune-tellers booth, the seniors had a telegraph booth, and the girls ' league had a spook house. •r 130 ETH E ART 132 BALL Pat Burke was crowned ‘‘Miss Sweet- heart by Ann Robinson at the an- nual Sweetheart ' s Ball which is sponsored by the Ko-Hi-Nur. Mar- lene Denny and Jeannie John were her Ladies-in-waiting while they rep- resented the Senior and Sophomore classes. John Colladay was Pat ' s es- cort. XMAS B ALL Glittering snowflakes and Christmas trees gave a perfect setting for the Christmas Ball, sponsored by the Hi- Tri on December 18. The Harmon- aires furnished the music for the oc- casion. SWAN SONG When we started work on our hot rod last year we were all new and had little knowledge of the hardships that lay ahead. Among the things that made this year ' s Coronal class a memorable one were: the unmet dead- lines, working during lunch, and the trips to Monrovia. I can remember Larry ' s driving all the way from Monrovia to Fontana to find an eating place suitable for Betty. During the course of the year lots of things ir- ritated me, but looking back its different.
