BUSINESS MANAGER Thru The year H o ■ Vi i I ■ i ■ . . . we have worked together as a student body to make our school an outstanding one; our year a memorable one. In this book with pictures and stories, we have tried to remind you of the important events of the year — the little things that have meant so much to all of us — the memories we ll take with us. Our school has been an outstanding one and this year has been a memorable one, rich in experience both scholastically and socially. We hope, as a staff, we have been success- ful in reviewing the events of this past year. Why not turn the page now and let us take you back thru OUR year at C.H.S. However the CORONAL has never said “thank you to the people who have helped to make it an exceptional yearbook. CORONAL has never expressed its appreciation to the business establishments who support this yearbook by purchasing advertising space, or to the teachers and administrators who have worked with us, or to YOU, the Student Body who are the subjects on the pages that follow. CORONAL would not exist were it not for YOU — all of you. This is our way of saying Thank You, by presenting the 1955 CORONAL, dedicated to YOU. 7 Your School . v GORDON DUNCAN, PRINCIPAL The Student Body elected officers, plus representatives from Eng- lish 10, U.S. History, and American Problems classes compose the governing body of C.H.S. Our Student Council, under the leadership of President Doug Brooks, has concluded a very profitable and successful year. They have, through their many acts of good judgment, given C.H.S. a democratic school govern- ment of which Corona and our Student Body can be justly proud. HUBERT KNILANS, ADVISOR l °on, ' ey. A °Vi ' so 12 Belvia Cropper — Head Cheer Leader Bob Hendrickson — Coronal Editor GORDON DUNCAN - PRINCIPAL CORONA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GEORGE BROKAW - BUSINESS MANAGER CORONA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION GEORGE KIBBY - SUPERINTENDENT CORONA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT As members of C.H.S. and citizens of Corona we are naturally very proud of our beautiful campus. Many visitors to Corona are always surprised and pleased to discover that so beautiful a campus belongs to a high school and not a college. To keep our grounds looking their best is a full time job. It requires efficient men who have an interest in our school. A school the size of ours requires lots of office work. Someone has to do all the book work, keep track of all the students, issue tardy slips, write off campus passes, and put out a daily bulletin, just to mention a few of many such duties. To fill this spot, C.H.S. has three of the nicest women you could ever hope to find. They listen to our feeble excuses, (the alarm clock didn ' t go off; I had a flat tire, etc., etc.,) with compassion, under- standing, and — disbelief. They tolerate our long conversations on the office phone, often displaying the patience of Job. Without these two groups of men and women we could hardly have a well running school. Their consideration and cooperation will be remem- bered in years to come. OFFICE STAFF AND CUSTODIANS Custodians (from left to right) --Mr. T. Allen, Leon Welt, and Tony Villa. In the library, each period of the day, three or four of the girls on duty check out books, straighten the book shelves, and in general, help Miss Powell keep our library in order. These girls on numerous occasions have been especially helpful by finding the right book for a term paper or test. The board and sponsors of the G.A.A. have produced a fully rounded sports program for girls including tennis, basketball, hockey, speedball, softball, and volleyball. In addition to sports, first aid courses and ballroom dancing were added to make G.A.A. one of the most popular girls ' organizations at C.H.S. In the above picture you are viewing the more athletic minded girls here at C.H.S. Their long hours of afternoon practice helped strengthen the many championship teams. 37 GLEE CLUB Harmony reigns supreme in this popular organization here at C.H.S. Under the direction of J. Lorin Farmer, Corona High ' s Crimson and Gold Choir has become one of the best known school choirs in Riverside County as well as our Tri -County League. The choir participated in programs for many of the service clubs including the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Ro- tarians, and the Women s Improvement Club. For C.H.S., they sang at our Thanksgiving Assembly and Christmas Concert with the band at the Naval Hospital. They appeared in the Annual Tri-County Music Festival and the Southern California Spring Concert. Both performances were in the beautiful Bridges ' Auditorium at Claremont. C.H.S. is proud of its singing choristers — for all their hard work and fine results. ABOVE (BOTTOM ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT): Rex Nichols, Ronald Hart, Mr. Farmer, Charles Les- cault, and Larry Treton. The Future Farmers of America or F.F.A. as it is commonly known, is a national organiza- tion of, by, and for boys studying Vocational Agriculture in public secondary schools. It is an integral part of the progress of voca- tional education in Agriculture. Among other things, members learn through active partici- pation how to conduct and take part in a public meeting; to speak in public; to buy and sell cooperatively; to solve their own problems; to finance themselves; and to as- sume civic responsibility. The foundation upon which the. Future Farmers of America organization is built, includes leadership and character development, sportsmanship, co- operation, service, thrift, scholarship, im- proved agriculture, citizenship, and patri- otism. It is interdenominational and affiliated with the international organization of the Y.M.C.A. The Burke brothers, George and Charlie, plus Joe Soldate, Bruce Strauss and sponsor Roy Hammons provided the necessary leader- ship for an organization the quality of Hi-Y. Throughout the year the meetings of the Hi-Y have been varied as well as interesting. Guest speakers, special pro- grams and outside trips have been enjoyed by the largest Hi-Y in C.H.S. history. In addition to meetings and excursions the club carried out service projects that have been of value to both our school and community. BIG BRASS BAND One of Corona High ' s most colorful and active organizations is our own Panther Band. Everyday during fifth period you could hear the band rehearsing for one of the many concerts, contests, and assemblies in which it participated. While football season was in full swing, during many of those fifth periods and at least one evening a week, you could watch the band practicing for the very fine half-time shows it presented at all our home football games. This year, as usual, our Panther Band rated very high at all competitive parades and con- certs it attended. The All Western Band Revi ew at Long Beach, the district and state concert contests at Redlands and Long Beach respectively, and the Maytime Band Review at Na- tional City highlighted the year ' s outings for the band. The band of approximately thirty members that played also sponsored the New Year ' s Dance in the Odd Fellows ' Hall and formed a pep band at all the pep as- semblies and home basketball games. Twelve members of this organization formed a very fine dance band that has played at several out of town dances. New director, Herbert Pipes of El Centro, drum majorette Carolyn Massey and band president James Ruiz have kept the band on their toes. l, ' e f te as ' jr e,i ° secte ' ° ' r _ pt ce . 3 Oe° n r . , v She 1 ' 0 ' Pe tV. Since it was the first formal dance of the year, a large crowd of C.H.S.er ' s turned out to make the Christmas Ball a complete success. The theme, A Child ' s Christmas Dreams, was enjoyed by all, through the gay decorations land dance programs. During intermission a short variety show with several singers and an interpre- tive dance was presented. At midnight, with the melody Goodnight, Sweet- heart playing, the dance ended. The Odd Fellows ' Hall was the setting for a very successful New Year ' s Eve Dance sponsored by the local Band Boosters Club. This was the first New Year ' s dance since 1951 when the Band Boosters sponsored a New Year ' s Eve Party for both high school and junior high. From nine ' til one, students, their guests and alumni enjoyed themselves while dancing to the music of Ken Logan ' s Band. As the clock neared 12:00 paper hats, noisemakers, and serpen- tine were distributed among the dancers and, at the stroke of midnight, balloons were dropped from a large net suspended above the heads of the gay crowd. This dance, which was more or less an experiment, turned out so well that the Band Boosters considered the possibility of making the dance an annual affair. 61 VARSITY AT LEFT, Coach Max Diamond. Though they didnt ' sound too loud during the first assembly (they didn ' t know how to spell sopho- more), they finally got with it and enthusiastically took part in pep rallies, assemblies, and games. Ralph Kuiper, President; Chenta Barron, Vice-President; Joyce Agnes, Secretary; Lydia Aguirre, Treasurer; and Sharon Ware and Frank Danieri, yell leaders, organized their class early in the year, started collecting class dues, and appointed committee chairmen in charge of the class assembly and class rings. JUNIORS The class of 1956 has continued to uphold the excellent records it made during the preceding year. Under the leadership of Ruben Felix, President; Betty McDonald, Vice President; Joyce Phipps, Secretary; and Joe Reynoso, Treasurer, the Junior Class has, with advice from the Seniors, set a fine example for the up and coming Sophomores. Boys and girls from this class have been outstanding in the field of ath- letics, in the classrooms and in the many clubs and organizations here at C.H.S. The most important event of all for the Juniors was the Junior-Senior Prom, which, under the direction of hardworking committees was a long to be remembered event. The class, in its Senior year, was under the leadership of Bob Garland, President; Diana Nutter, Vice President; Evelyn Herron, Secretary; Frank Munoz, Treasurer; and Sheila Greer and Jim Ely, Cheer Leaders. The assembly presented to the student body by the mighty Seniors soared to new heights of excellence. With the theme, Indian Summer, to work with, Karen Perkins, George Burke, and Dan Kalin wrote the script for the pageant while fellow classmates made the scenes for Corona High ' s first successful outdoor variety show. Senior pictures, to be treasured for years, followed. With the exchanging of pictures, thoughts turned to graduation announcements, college applications, and those great and mysterious things called jobs. The last two weeks of school were the most hectic of the year for the Seniors. Ditchday, Baccalaureate, finals, year- book signatures, Senior Banquet, grades, and then graduation filled out the last year for the class of 1955. CORONAL STAFF Well here it is our 1955 CORONAL. It ' s been a lot of hard work as anyone on the staff will readily tell you but nevertheless we ' ve had fun doing it. Now that you ' ve had a chance to look through your annual you have probably noticed a num- ber of changes. Every year, each staff tries to add something different and as you can see we added quite a few new features. First of all the biggest difference between this book and the books of preceding years is the size. As you noticed, when Bob presented them at the as- sembly, they are much larger than previous CORONALS. Then, as you open the book, you probably ob- served the three different colors on the divi- sion pages and on the first sixteen pages, the different arrangement of senior pictures and the index at the back of the book. These pictures, especially the division pages, caught your eye. Several times throughout the year we almost missed getting them due to unexpected rain- storms, photographers with pneumonia, school ABOVE (LEFT TO RIGHT): Wally DeGeorge, Typist; Phil Fredericks, Sports. RIGHT (LEFT TO RIGHT): Ken Colwell, Copy Writer; Ken Carroll, Typist. 158 vacations, and Senior tests but George and Rudy some how managed. All during this time we were trying to get ads sold, copy written and typed and all the Seniors ' names spelled right. Judy and Charlie had charge of the Seniors ' ac- tivity sheets; organized them into some kind of order and put them into the Senior index. Of course the rest of the staff did more than their share too. Karen wrote and corrected copy while Wally, Phil and Don kept the typewriters going. The two Kenny s, Colwell and Carroll, played Jack-of-all-trades by helping out in nearly every department. Our two artists, Eugene and Augie, are responsible for the art work throughout the book. It takes money to publish an annual this size and Ed Paul is the guy we have to thank for the moola this year. Well here we are, the 1955 Coronal staff. We hope you’ve enjoyed the book but before you put it away, Bob has something else to say on the last page. The Staff. BELOW (LEFT TO RIGHT): Eugene Eaton, Art Editor; Earl Winderman, Ad- visor; Ed Paul, Business Manager. Signed, The foregoing pages are a record of our year, 1955, at Corona High. We have attempted to reproduce these experiences faithfully and honestly. We hope that as we glance through these pages in the years to come, they will enable us to recapture the spirit and feeling shared during this year. We would like to thank the Yearbook House of Monrovia, the S. K. Smith Co., and Rudy Ramos for the assistance they gave us in producing the CORONAL. Ofnother TJ. 3$. 3t. creation PUIUSMCIS Of UM o
