Nissly taught English in one of the tive high schools in Chad, a country in Africa. At the high school in Chad there were 750 students of which only about 25 were girls. For a blackboard a section of wall covered with charcoal was used. The Peace Corps pays the teachers the same wages that a Chadian teacher would receive. The pay is not a lot by American standards, but it is a lot by Chadian standards, Nissly said. The average annual income for Cha- dians is approximately 390. Nissly was not alone in Chad. With him were two other Peace Corps volun- teers. He said it was a good arrange- ment because it gave him someone who knew what he was talking about. While overseas, Nissly was exposed to a number of diseases. He had 14 ino- culations in two weeks to protect him from such illnesses as cholera, typhoid, rabies and hepatitis. I learned a lot about how other peo- ple think in different cultures. l got to travel all over central and northern Africa without even buying a ticket. The Peace Corps paid for it, Nissly said. Q-
