wenty Years of Histor Corona del Mar High School has undergone many changes since it opened its doors in 1962 to 980 students. The first students to attend CdM adhered to a strict dress code with girls wearing black, navy or dark grey mid-knee length skirts with plain white blouses. Boys had belted pants with tucked- in shirts. The code was dropped in 1969-70. Throughout these changes, CdM has ke t its high academic standards and outstanding athletic traditions. Scholastically, CdM tests scores such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test did not follow the national downwardrtrendg scores remained consistent or edged upward. And with the advent of state-mandated proficiency testing, CdM continued to graduate 99'V0 of its students with 900f0 continuing on to college. A winning tradition was established in sports with CdM capturing nearly 20 CIF championships over the past 20 years. CdM's waterpolo, basketball, tennis, golf and baseball teams brought glory to the school. With the passage of Title 9 providing equal opportunity for women's sports, increased participation and excellence was evident on girls' teams. Traditions have been a part of CdM's past, and the rivalr between CdM and Harbor has resulted in the winning of the traditional bell by CdM three times. Although customs have come and gone, CdM students have always found ways to occupy their time with such activities as a beard growing contest, datin games, streaking, growing a vegetable garden, establishin T-shirt clubs, and tie friendly rivalry of Spirit Week, Battle of the Classes, ant? this year's Olympic Week. Despite the problems of financial cutbacks, and declining enrollment, the students of CdM will continue to excel and find opportunities for fun, leadership and growth.
