hrough the years As one looks upon Corona del Mar High School today, surrounded by housing developments and traffic jams, it is hard to imagine that when the school opened in 1962 it was isolated except for the Ford Plant and a dirt road known as Iamboree. The city of Newport Beach began in 1889 as wharfside community. One of the most popular land marks in the Newport area was Balboa Island which in the 1800's was only a sandbar. In 1918 inside lots on the Island were as low as 525. Big Corona, though hard to believe, used to be the best surfing spot in the area before the jetty was built.
