Varsity wins CIF lt's late in the fourth quarter with 46 seconds on the clock. The Sea Kings are down 7 to 5 to Newport Harbor. The Sea Kings need the win to keep their i1 C.l.F. ranking. john Morrow pumps twice and releases to score a goal. Harbor takes control and stalls for 35 seconds. CdM regains possession and calls a time-out with 8 seconds left. In a last ditch effort, with 3 seconds on the clock, Eric Paulsen shoots a Hail Mary to the Newport goal and . . . This year in sports, the Sea King varsity water polo team was, indeed, the team to watch. Led by the strong offensive action of David Imbernino and Tom Temple, as well as the defensive talents of joe Roh and Eric Paulsen, the varsit clinched a 23-'I overall season record. They finished second in league with a record of 6-1. The Sea Kings also won tournaments out of league: the lohn C. Schmidt Memorial Tournament, the South Coast Tournament, and the West Coach Championships in Santa Barbara. ln a ame this season, against a young Saddleback team, the Sea Kings set a C.l.F. record with the most goals scored in one game, 52-3. Although there were claims of unsportsmanship-the reality was that the halftime score was 30-0, and the varsity team went home and left the rest of the game up to the j.v. and frosh-soph players. The Sea Kings were ranked first in C.l.F. until their only loss of the season to Newport Harbor 7-6. Newport needed this win to stay in C.l.F., while the loss to CdM only dropped them to a 42 C.l.F. ranking. In the C.l.F. championship game, this season, CdM played Newport Harbor in probably the most exciting s orting event in CdM history. With 78 secondjs left in overtime, Tom Temple scored the winning goal, making CdM the CIF 4-A champions. 1. Defensive talent Eric Paulsen 7 sizes up the situation. 2.
