stronomers look upg wargamers use tactics In search of black holes? Well, maybe not, but the Astronomy Club made many observations to distant galaxies and planets. This year the club was led by President Michelle Goodrow and Advisor lim Canary. It was a club of stellar observers who had a genuine interest in observing various constellations, and planets. Orion's Belt, Tarus, and Andromeda were some of the various star patterns they observed. The club's purpose was to learn more about these stars and planets and their motions about the universe. The members saw movies every week and took field trips to such observatories as Griffith Park and Palomar. The club also had an 8-inch lens telescope of their own. The club took pride in their homogenous interests. The Wargaming Guild was another such group. Guild members practiced strategy and combatative skills on simulated battle ground gameboards. Orge, Dungeons and Dragons, Starfleet Battles were among some of the games they played. It was an exciting time in the science room during lunch when the wargamers were playing. lt is a time of mental endurance and stimulation, says wargamer President Eric Holmgren. 5 1. 40 Sailors and surfers compete nationally CdM's sailing team has been ranked in the top ten nationally since 1972 when a semi-official group of CdM sailors took fourth place in the National Championships at Ft. Worth, Texas. Since then, CdM has been national champion twice, once in 1981 and again in 1982. This year, a roup of fifteen sailors practiced every Monday ant? Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. in preparation for the Cressy Cup National Championship held in May in Annapolis, Md. ln addition to the Cressy Cup, CdM sailors competed in a series of races against arch-rival Newport Harbor, as well as such schools in the west coast as Servite, Loyola fLos Angelesl, Wilson H.S. lLong Beachl, and Point Loma High School. CdM was once again ranked in the top ten and the chances for top national honors are very high. The surfing team, with its new advisor, Ken Fish, has become fun and competitive. Being nationally affiliated with NSSA, the team competed all over Southern California from Point Conception to the Mexican border. The team was coached by john Gothard with President Mike Kelly and Secftres. Richard Wollcott. The team all had a common ambition: Kill the NSSA Open Season. H2 g 1 X s 2 I 06 S3

New clubs get a start New trends can lead to new ideas for clubs. This is true for CdM's recently formed European Enlightenment Club and Computer Club. EEC, the creation of Mrs. Anita Painter's European History class, was for anyone interested in European culture. Activities included watching films at lunch and traveling to museums, plays, and restaurants. The club's goal was to explore the history and culture of Europe. The Computer Club was a product of the new, growing interest students have in computers. Under advisor Angelo Vassos, students have learned how to operate and program a computer. 142 computer club
