students learn rn the great outdoors Is it possible to have fun while studying ecology? Yes Field Ecology was a class that explored the various aspects of ecology: biology, chemistry, astrology, 84 geology in the natural environment of the outdoors. This class gave students a chance to become better acquainted with their environment and to see how they fit in. They lived out their education on camping trips to Anza Borrego, San Onofre, and Kern. When they were not camping, they met in the Biology room under the guidance of Mr. Bob Fry, Mr. lim Canary, Mr. Dale Ghere, 84 Mr. Ron Schnitger. . 1. 40 Sailors and surfers compete nationally CdM's sailing team has been ranked in the top ten nationally since 1972 when a semi-official group of CdM sailors took fourth place in the National Championships at Ft. Worth, Texas. Since then, CdM has been national champion twice, once in 1981 and again in 1982. This year, a roup of fifteen sailors practiced every Monday ant? Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. in preparation for the Cressy Cup National Championship held in May in Annapolis, Md. ln addition to the Cressy Cup, CdM sailors competed in a series of races against arch-rival Newport Harbor, as well as such schools in the west coast as Servite, Loyola fLos Angelesl, Wilson H.S. lLong Beachl, and Point Loma High School. CdM was once again ranked in the top ten and the chances for top national honors are very high. The surfing team, with its new advisor, Ken Fish, has become fun and competitive. Being nationally affiliated with NSSA, the team competed all over Southern California from Point Conception to the Mexican border. The team was coached by john Gothard with President Mike Kelly and Secftres. Richard Wollcott. The team all had a common ambition: Kill the NSSA Open Season. H2 g 1 X s 2 I 06 S3
