The stars of the show, in the order of their appearance werl Talow? - Larry Welch as Toby Perkins, a boy of all work. Russell Jack as Uncle Josh Simpson, everybody's friend. Carlene Day as Mary Sanders, Uncle Josh's ward. Geneva Day as Roxy, a great help--in love with Toby. Linwood Perkins as Henry Simpson, Uncle Josh' son. Robert Watkins as Frank Kalton, from the city. Barbara Stone as Lizzie Evans, somewhat crooked. The entire action ofthe play centered around the living room at the rear of Uncle Josh's store. The plot wove all the characters into a robbery which presented a problem to everyone until Toby came to the rescue, retrieved the stolen money, and named the culprit. The final curtain came down on two happy couples--Roxy with her Toby, and Henry with his childhood sweetheart, Mary. The two accomplices in the crime, Frank and Lizzie niet Justice and Uncle Josh is happy again, knowing that all his problems have been solved. Although nervousness was inside all seven Seniors, we had but one thought in mind--The show must go on. And that it did. Due to the keen directing of Mrs, Ulix?'J5lin3'f Eurqlinglish teacher, the skillful work of Mrs, lrva Copp, who so generously gave her time to be our make-up artist, and the assistance of Roger Sawyer, our ever-willing stage attendant, our play was a great success. A concert also held at Pike Mem. Hall at which time we sang many of the songs we had learned during the year. This year our glee club has 52 members, which includes not only the high school but also the Jr. High. Mrs. Carpenter visits our school every Monday afternoon and Charlene Elliot comes from Kezar Falls to accompany us at the piano. During this time we practice many songs, some of which we will sing at the concert and audition this spring, Many thanks to Mrs. Carpenter and Charlene Elliot for their help. SX Spelling Contest Norma, Patty and Priscilla were chosen to represent Cornish High School at the Cumberland York League spelling contest at Potter Acadmey on November 6th, William .Tenness was selected as alternate. Priscilla who remained the longest for the Cornish group placed fifth. D M '56 lub ff Softball BACK ROW: M. Berry, D, Watson, N. Phillips, L. Day, S. Watson, C, Goodwin, Coach Mrs. Stritch. FRONT ROW:P. Outhuse, B. Harmon, C. Day, Cv. Day, P. Cross. Our first softball game was with Potter Academy at Potter. Due to the lack of practice we were badly defeated. After we practiced for a while and got into better condition we scheduled another game with Potter at Cornish. We are very happy to say we defeated them by a larger score than they defeated us in the first game. Cheerleaders Norma Charlene Patty Diann Ba rba ra Baseball The Rams started off in high gear to take New Gloucester and Potter by 6-4 and Z-1 respectively and then lost to Limerickf Hollis, Buxton, and Casco by 8-6, 4-Z, 10-Z, and 10-7. The boys still have high hopes of capturing the trophy this spring. This year the C.Y.S.S.C. split the baseball season in two. They made a fall league and a spring league. The winner of the fall will play the winner in the spring for the championship. Linwood Perkins, Pitcher: Robert Watkins, first base, Larry Welch, right fieldg and Russell Jack, catcher, graduate this spring. Other players are Norman Scott, center field: Lloyd Day, third base: Rober Sawyer, short stopg Leonard Day, second base: Keith Rankin, left field. The open spots left by the graduates of '53 will probably be filled in by Jeff DiBiaso, Elwyn Day, Peter Gordon, and F oul-Shooting Champion Just before our yearbook went to press, Patty Cross became this year's state girls' foul-shooting champion. She won the Anne E. McKechnie award sponsored by the Southwestern Board of Coaches and Officials, March 7 in the Westbrook High Richard Outhuse. ym. g Patty dissolved a deadlock which had existed since the early shooting fshe was the next to the last of the 33 girls to shootl between defending champion Diane Wood, South Portland, seeking her third straight crown and Gloria Fields of Sanford High. They had aced 29. With her two-hand toss, Patty had a high run of Z3 and made 31 out of 35 baskets. She made the first three good, missed the fourth and picked up four more. From then on it was clear sailing as she poured in a steady streak from the ninth to 31 before she missed another. Safely in, she missed her last shot. Carlene Goodwin retrieved for her and aided in holding the steady, rhythmical pace. Girls' Basketball FRONT ROW: S, Watson, C. Goodwin, C, Day, Capt. Norma Phillips, D. Watson, P. Cross. SECOND ROW: P. Outhuse, S. Clark, D. Martin, L. Day, M, Berry, Coaches Stritch and Hazen. Our Cornish girls completed a fairly successful season with a record of 15 wins, 1 tie, and 4 losses. The team placed second in the Cumberland-York Small Schools Conference in our division. After winning three non-division games Cornish dropped their first division game to Limerick 39-Z5. The Rams outvied Limington Z7-Z0 which proved to be the only league loss for the visitors. Buxtons third period offense proved disastrous as Buxton won Z4-20. The Rams easily outscored Hollis in their two games, winning the first 46-30 and the second 60-25. Our girls got revenge on both Buxton and Limerick as they won 48-44 and 56-38 respectively. Among our victories were two games against a good alumni team. Diann Watson, Norma Phillips and Charlene Day have been defensive standouts all season. Captain Charlene Day will be the only loss to the team for another year as she graduates this June. Patty Cross won the team foul shooting contest and will represent the school in the annual contest to be held in Westbrook. Suzanne Watson, Carlene Goodwin, Dorothy Martin and Suzanne Clark played good ball as reserves during the season. Patty Cross was elected captain for next season.
