DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of 1949. take deep and sincere pride in dedicating our Yearbook to Miss Eliza Murray. Miss Murray was born in Corning on Decem- ber 19, 1897. She attended Corning Grade School and was graduated from Corning High School in 1916. She attended Ohio University at Athens and received her B. S. in Education in 1940. In September of 1917 she began her teaching career in the second grade, the very position she now occupies here in Corning. Most of the time, she taught in the second; but, for a brief period, she moved to the first grade, only to move back into the second grade after a short time. She has now taught faithfully for thirty-two years in Corning. This is, indeed, outstanding. We thank you, Miss Murray, for all you have done for us. Not only for our class, but for the many classes and pupils that have graduated from Corning High School. It is through guidance such as yours that we hope to become better citizens and leaders. S. with destination Graduation. The conductor for the first part of the journey was Mr. Stephen Benedict, who announced all stops and “punched our tickets. The passengers on board elected officers to supervise our activities for the first part of the trip, and we had a very pleasant journey with Randall Mayes as pres- ident, Louise Love as v. president, Margaret Barrett, secretary, and Margie Hillis, treasurer. Mrs. Jeanette Apple announced all im- portant calls and acted as our home-room teacher while the train traveled with great speed. We paused for a brief rest in the spring of 1946 and started rolling again in September; Many passengers became “travel sick and got off the train, discontinuing the journey, while Mildred Watts boarded and rode with us until the end of the trip. Floyd Brown acted as our home-room teacher while our new conductor, Mr. William Forshey, who was to guide our 49ER to its final stop, called all stations in a loud, clear voice. Our class officers for this time were: Charlene Levering, president, Gene Matthews, v. president, Betty Grannon, treasurer, and Martha Fisher, secretary. We had a Student Council this year and chose our class president, together with Randall Mayes and Margie Hillis to represent us. The annual Junior-Senior Banquet was a big affair, and from our crew the Junior Class elected C. Levering, M. Hillis, M. Fisher, E. Fouts, D. Jones, D. Bryson, G. Matthews, B. Wright, D. Thomas, R. Mayes, B. Har- mon, and K. Rodgers to act as servers. This was a big moment in our voyage and surely one we will never forget. May came quickly and so we paused for the summer, eagerly anticipating the third lap of our journey. This year we rode in a car marked “Juniors. ’ Again, when we boarded in September, we found that many of our former passengers were not to return so we bade them a sad farewell and continued our trip with Mrs. Gladys Forshey as class advisor, Margie Hillis as president, Louise Love, v. president, Gene Matthews, treasurer, and Jpan Morris as secretary. We sponsored the Homecoming Dance, and Martha Fisher, of our own class, was elected queen. We raised our financial standing by selling Christmas cards, T-shirts, and magazine subscriptions. We were proud of our class play, “Grandad Steps Out, which proved to be a huge success under the direction of Mrs. Forshey, with Bill Wright as Grandad. Near the end of the trip, we became hungry, so went to the dining car for a hamburger fry. Finally the big moment in this part of our tour had arrived—our Prom. We will never forget it. We decorated in a Dutch theme and the kids looked wonderful in swanky gowns and corsages. However, there was a certain air of sadness toward the end of the evening, be- cause we heard the engineer blow the whistle to signal the train was coming to a stop. Yes, this was to be the last stop, after which we would be permitted to get on board again. The next stop would be the last--Graduation--when we would all part, never to be allowed on the train C. H. S. again. In the fall of 1948 we assembled at the station and eagerly awaited the arrival of the train. We were so eager to get rolling again after a summer of rest from our travels. Some new travelers joined us for this last part of the trip: Rosemarie Siemer, Bill Mc- Cabe, and Rita Clifford. Soon after getting on board, we organized under the strict guidance of Mr. Rodgers. Bill Wright became presi- dent, Martha Fisher v. president, Donna Bryson secretary, and Gene Matthews treasurer. We made early plans for our Yearbook and focused our aim on a trip to Washington after school was out. We sold potato-chips at basketball games and netted a neat sum at the Halloween Carnival, which we split with the Juniors. We published our newspaper each month under the direction of Mr. Rodgers and finally won recognition by Quill and Scroll, International Journalism Honorary. We picked our class play which was entitled “One Wild Night, planned for our May Day, took a field trip to Columbus and made plans for Baccalaureate, Commencement, and our trip, which have not come to pass at this writing. We know we shall soon get off at the end of the line, but the trip has been fun as well as a most educational one, even though the way has been long and rugged. We thank all the teachers who have done so much for us and we thank all those who helped to make this journey possible. We are grateful, and in the spring flood of memories, we will always remember those happy hours we spent together. He spends his time in a wheel chair and drinks cod-liver oil. Rodney’s house is as quiet as a tomb at all times, but when he finds that his Aunt Myra Opal Dodd (Charlene Levering) is coming for a visit, he warns Jodwillow (Dick Thomas) his butler and Henrietta (Louise Love) the house- keeper, to see that nothing disturbs his Aunt, for not only is he considering her health but also her pocketbook. Charlotte Allen (Margie Hillis) Aunt Myra’s com- panion is very healthy. She completely overwhelms Rod- ney. When Dr. Bell (Gene Matthews) comes to examine Rodney, he phones his wife to tell her about one of his rare flowers that is dying. Rodney overhears him and thinks that the doctor is talking about him. Rodney decides to spend his last night doing exciting things. He meets Jade (Dorothy Jones), exposes Scorpio (Bob Harmon) the town gangster, gives his home to a school for girls. Doris (Martha Fisher) and Maribelle (Rosemarie Siemer) spend the night at his house to officially open the new dormitory. Maribelle has a bugle which she blows whenever she is separated from Doris. Doris’ boyfriend (Randall Mayes) complicates matters and adds to the confusion. The whole plot moves to a very humorous climax. Other members of the cast are Nurse Trent (Donna Bryson), Hawkins and Dickens (Harry Wade and Bill McCabe), Mrs. Rooley (Freda Woodruff), Mrs. Batsom (Elaine Fouts), and Officer Brayden (Delmar Alfman.) The play was produced April 29, under the direction of James E. Rodgers, Jr. It was a huge success. Queen For A Day Queen And Court Block That Kick Merry Xmas to you too.
