They should! They were one of the many witty lines from the delightful comedy, Stag Line, presented by the Senior Class of l954, February twenty-second and twenty-third. This hilarious comedy was in three acts and was centered around the Mason family, mainly their youngest daughter, Maudie Maudie was a popular, young teen-ager who felt it her duty to assist in the preparations of her sister, Sylvia's wedding. Along with this problem, she was preoccupied with straightening out the problems of her Own love life. Davy was her ever-faithful standby but Maudie, not entirely satisfied with just one boy, planned a campaign to inveigle the attentions of Mac-the unsuspecting but very attractive best man, Maudie managed to get matters thoroughly confused. A wedding invitation was sent to Smitty, the dressmaker instead of to the very elite Mrs. Farrington Smith. The wedding gown was delivered to the church-an unfortunate mishap. Teese mixups caused Jerry, the prospective bridegroon, and the entire Mason family much annoyance. The behavior of Maudie's typical teen-age pals didn't lessen the annoyance but did add humor to the situation. Added together these varied and confusing events provided an amusing and c'ever piece of entertainment. The members of the senior class participating in the play received considerable applause from the appreciative audience which packed the house to capacity for both showings. Anil suddenly there was with the anoel a multi- tude of the heavenly host praising God and saxing Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peOCE to rnen of good will. Thus the age-old story of the Babe of Bethlehem was once again presented at Corn- ing Free Academy, Sounds of clear soft chimes filled the auditorium :s students and friends took their places silently. Slowly the choir rnoved down the middle aisle carrying lighted candles and gracefully took their places on the risers decorated with pine boughs. Their voices rang out as gloriously as did the angels on that blessed night. As the choir sang O Come, O Come Emmanuel the curtains slowly parted revealing the Annunciation One by one tableous were presented leading up to the Nlatixity--unfolding to the audience the story of the Birth of the Christ Child. After the curtains were drawn upon the lost scene, the choir left the candle-lit auditorium to the strains cf l-lark, the Hearld Angels Sing, The solernf nifx which enveloped the audience made everyone owore that Christmas held for each one a deeper significance which often is overshadowed by that of rnere gifts lt made many realize that the peace to men of good will is something for which the entire world is still sfrivingf' R ,na 1 ROW 2 rIu'uITon1w Loft To rrqht -Jqhrm Lesson Dowd Currrc, WM- lrom Choocy, Lor crm Yorro Errzo- lbofh Coroocblo Gorx Hcrriach, Rrchord Modrqon, Corolme Merfsin, R o D e r T Push, Gordon Whrfc. One surmised that the orchestra, under the patient guidance of Mr. Walsh, was putting the finishing touches on one of their many renditions for the forthcoming concert. These Tuesday and Thursday afternoon practices were what welded the orchestra into a fine, well coordinated organization. Its performance at such events as graduation exercises, National Honor Society toppings, the annual Senior Play, and its own Spring Concert were what has made the orchestra o credit to the Academy. This year lzlaine Ireland acted as concert mistress at its well received concert. The program included: Highlights from Jerome Kern's Showboat , Midnight Beguine by Grundman, Keltic Lament by Foulds, Macarthy-Tierney's Rangers' Song, and Minuet and Trio from the Surprise symphony by Haydn, page sixty-nine Seni Early in the fall, the band began to rehearse for its many appearances during the school year. Their first pertormance came during the football games at half-time. The band marched and executed various formations which have earned for the band much commenda- tion. After the football season, the band began to rehearse for the annual spring concert which was held on May 26. The concert program was as follows: Peter and the Wolf by Serge Prokofieff, Orion Overture by Ted Mesang, China Doll and The Rakes of Mallow by Leroy Anderson, Frankie and Johnnie by Maurice C. Whitney, Arrangers' Holiday by David Bennett, Harold Walters, and Paul Yoder, The Mikado by Arthur S. Sullivan, Themes from Dragnet by Walter Schumann, lt's a Grand Night for Singing and Americans We by Henry Fillmore. The maiorettes performed on the darkened stage with their illuminated batons while the band played College Life by Henry Frantzen. The Senior Band, directed by Mr. Edward Walsh, also took port in the annual Memorial Day Parade. page seventy Row lt Row 2: Row 3: ROW 4C 5' ibottoml Adelbert Bablo, Jane Welty, Kenneth Woodruff, Patricia Smith, Victor Allison, Barbara Waaland, Susan Fairman. Our schedule was cut to seven games this year, the first game being with Haverling High School of Bath. After weeks of hard training the team met its first test and easily rolled over Haverling with a score of 34-O, This victory was a great boost to the team's morale as it started in practicing for the game with Hornell. At half time Hornell led with a score of l3-O. After the team returned from the locker room at half time, they really started to play heads up foot- ball. When the buzzer sounded ending the game, the Academy was ahead 20-l3. Despite the win over Hornell, the squad suffered a heavy loss, the result of an injury inflicted on fullback, Duane Sprague. Duane suffered a broken ankle and was out of the line up for the rest of the season, The team then traveled to Geneva for their third game of the season. lt was a hard fought game all the way and the tilt ended in a 7-7 tie. The Bulldogs then met a powerful, undefeated Elmira Heights team. Fumbles proved very costly to the blue and white as the game ended with the Heights team on the long end of a 47-6 score. The Academy recovered from this defeat to come back against Batavia and defeat them with a score of 2l-O. Excellent passwork by Jack Joris highlighted the Academy offensive attack. After the Batavia game the team suffered many disappointments. The squad suffered heavily from iniuries following the Hornell game. Many boys from page the first string were out for the rest of the games or else not at their best physical peak. The boys then came up against a powerful Sayre High School team, lt was played at Sayre on a snow overed field and the hard running, undefeated Sayre squad whipped the Academy 43-l3. The next game was the crucial game with North- side. The Academy was in first place in the Con- ference League with Northside a half game behind. The team took to the field with enthusiasm, but in- juries continued to plague the Bulldogs. Northside won the game and the West Central Football Conference Championship with a score of l9-O. The Academy team was led bv co-captains Richard Mizzoni and Duane Sprague. Head coach of the squad was the dean of the southern tier coaches, Ernest Craumer. He was assisted by Irving Snyder, backfield coach, and Harold Hatch, line coach. Ken- neth Fielding coached the J. V. squad, many of whose members were moved up to the varsity for the North- side game. Nine players will be lost via graduation leaving a good group of boys for the coaches to start out with next year. C, F. Although the Junior Varsity Football squad was not always on the winning side this season, it still kept the traditional team spirit. As with the Varsity team, much of the misfortune was due to injuries to the backfield men. The J. V. team suffered defeats at the hands of their old rivals, Northside, in both encounters. The inexperienced squad also was downed by Elmira Heights and Elmira Southside. However, they tied the usual strong Hornell team 6f6 in the final game. The players were coached under the able direction of Mr. Fielding. Alfred Joris was selected by his teammates as captain. Many promising candidates for the next season seem probable. C. F. A. These girls were preparing themselves for the first football game of the year. They were the Varsity Cheerleaders. At all the football games they could be seen in their traditional uniforms of blue jackets, white skirts, and white beanies, yelling and cheering their team on to victory. In November the Cheerleaders held their annual assembly just before the Northside-C. F. A. game. The theme of the assembly was the lives of the Bulldog and Tiger , mascats of the individual teams and based on nursery rhymes. As the football season closed and the basketball season opened, the cheerleaders changed their uniforms. They wore blue beanies, and blue princess style dresses with C. F. A. on the skirts. They looked very neat and were behind their team all the way. At the end of the year the annual Cheerleaders' banquet was held at the Mark Twain Hotel at which the captains of the incoming J. V. and Varsity squads were elected. This year's captain of Varsity was Carmen DeSilva. page ninety X. X , fsfqzvd. X gf V ' ,A ,yi-ftp! N r .. if! Ifffl' ' ,, fl, N!
