Frederick Jr. President To You the Graduates of 1971: As this is being written — midway through your sec- ond year at Corning — visions of a turbulent freshman year cross my mind. I wonder if the rather tranquil first semester of your sophomore year is the harbinger of the future or is merely the calm before the storm. Based on all I read there is still not agreement on either the causes or the results of the turmoils that embroiled higher education last year, and particularly in May 1970. Has this college generation regained faith in our in- stitutions or, as some commentators claim, is your generation receding into the social and political apathy of the 50's. I hope not, yet I certainly hope the extreme aberration of violence does not reoccur. Rather, to you the graduates, I hope your two years in college have given to you a real sense and awareness of the problems and injustices which face our society, some of the constructive tools to help repair the ills, a strong commitment to make this world a better place in which to live, a recognition that valid means are every bit as important as worthy goals, a realization that change, if it is really meaningful, implies concurrence from the constituency being affected by the change, and an awareness that constructive change takes time. Can two years at Corning have possibly given to you the above-mentioned insights? Perhaps not completely, but we hope that we have given you a start, for after all education in this complex world is a life-long process. Ralph Nader Ralph Nader was our first convocation, he appeared Sep- tember 22, 1970. Mr. Nader’s lecture dealt on the hazards of the environment made by man. Mr. Nader stated all pollution was a form of violence and that many innocent people had to suffer because of “corpo- ration violence.” He gave examples of big businesses polluting the air, land and water. Mr. Nader strongly felt that if each individual exerted some interest in pollution that the air we breathe and the water we drink would be cleaner and better for everyone. 190 J 0 E A N D T H E G I R L S Cihe Crier jf Che Crier Published by the students of Corning Community College REPOFSfNTEO f OB NATIONAL Al;v I !
