He is not only concerned with academic work but also with personal interests and ideals and has encouraged many young people to go on to successful careers. Mr. Kelly, an Associate Professor of Business Administration, has received degrees from Indiana State Teachers College in Pennsyl- vania and the University of Pittsburgh. He is presently working on his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. As director of the Student Center he has been responsible for creating an atmosphere in which the student can relax, study, or socialize. His guiding hand, as well as his hearty laugh, character- ize his active and outgoing personality. The class of 1966 proudly dedicates the “Corona” to Professor Kelly, a man whose warm and generous nature has endeared him to all, faculty and student, alike. BASKETBALL To attain skill, strength, coordination, and sportsmanship and dedicated instruction prepare students to overcome the obstacles met on life's playing fields. ACADEMICS AND ADMINISTRATION Progress, if you can call it that, is moving in a rather alarming geometric pro- gression. The human altitude record has soared from 17.6 miles in 1955 to 203.1 miles in 1963 and by the end of the decade will probably hit 248,000 miles. In only a few years, space penetration has moved from 250 miles to 237 million miles and is expected to reach 4,500 million miles by 1971. The greatest manmade explosion, a mere 20 megatons in 1955, was some 57 megatons by 1963 and by the end of the decade it will be a comforting 100 megatons. This means that for every man, woman, and child on earth, there is well over 20,000 pounds of high explosives. Man himself remains more confined to ordinary arithmetic. The one-mile run record has gone from 3.57 minutes in 1955 to 3.54 minutes in 1963. Soon it will drop below 3.50. Whenever I browse through a college yearbook I always wonder which students, as they enter a life of productive and creative activity, will set new kinds of records in man's restless struggle with his environment and with himself. Many students in this volume have already set records in many different ways. The community college itself, here in Corning, is also an example of a great achievement in higher education. Hopefully, it will continue to stress more than records in the pragmatic necessities; it will infuse in its students the desire to meet the challenges of the human spirit. William L.
