CORNING COMMUNITY COLLEGE CORNING, NEW YORK Table of Contents History of the College 4 Faculty and Administration 16 Sports and Activities 26 Graduates 40 2 Dedication Pres. W. Perry “The college has aimed for one goal; . . . From modest beginnings to develop a collegiate program of study and higher education opportunity for our area sec- ond to none.” If the fulfillment of this goal outlined in his first commencement speech is now being achieved, it is due largely to the unceasing efforts of our President, Dr. William Perry, since the founding of the college. We, the staff of the Baronian ’64, therefore dedicate this Yearbook to the Head of our college, our President, Dr. William Perry. 3 History of the College 4 5 Mrs. Brill On the steps of the Old Administration Building Prologue First. . . There came an idea, An idea which germinated And grew, An idea Born of a need, A need to study, A need to learn . . . Next, there came people, People dedicated, Dedicated to teach, To give of themselves, So that others might learn A nd grow In stature and in strength . . . Then came a place, A place to start, A place yet small, But supported And helped By a city’s people . . . And so, finally, A t long last, Corning Community College was born. Houghton House 1 On the lawn of Houghton House In the course of time, history tends to become obscure unless carefully recorded. It would be unforgivable to exclude from the Baronian ’64 even a bare semblance to such a record. C.C.C. is only in her infancy, yet the college is destined to grow. Already momen- tous events have occurred. The college has moved from the scattered buildings in the city of Corning to the permanent campus on Spenser Hill. This Yearbook, a record of the transition year, presents as an introduction an altogether too brief but, nevertheless, nostalgic re- minder of the first six years of the college. Harmonizing in the Student Center 8 Outside the Student Center Corning Community College was established in 1956 under the supervision of the State University of New York. The college’s aims were then, as they are now, to provide higher education to “all those willing and able to profit thereby, and also to provide guidance and assistance in maturing desirable personal characteristics.” Deep in thought The first entering class of 125 students in the fall of 1958 occupied Old School 3, two residence houses converted into the Student Center, and the Business Offices, in addition to the sedate Houghton House which was used as the library. The college soon grew to include the First Street dorm, known as the Perry House, and the Sullivan House, also a girls’ dormitory. 11 September, 1963 marked the coming of over 700 students up Spenser Hill to begin the academic year on the new campus, located midst the 600 acres of beautiful, secluded woodland given to the college. The Spring of ’64 saw the completion of the six, totally paid- for buildings which now make up the newest, proudest, and best junior college in the whole country. 12 Next page: Pillars of Stonehenge in the sun—the new gymnasium Left: Seven aspects of student life, from orientation to graduation Below: The old Ad. A Chinese saying. Graduation is traditionally the time a student considers as the closing of one chapter in his life and the beginning of another. The following pages are devoted to the graduates of June, 1964 and their activities: it is for them that this book is compiled so that, years from now, they may have a permanent memento of their student life at Corning Community College. Our Alma Mater With grace and beauty, valley we love, See her hills crowned in glory, stalwart above. Here where we gather ’neath banners bright, Red for courage and faith’s pure white: To Corning College, forever true, Our Alma Mater, loyal to you. In fields of learning we pioneer As our forefathers challenged each new frontier. Theirs was the vision showing the way For the future we build today. Though hampered by lack of time and beset with numerous prob- lems, our skeleton staff has finally produced CCC’s second Yearbook. The Baronian ’64 would never have been made possible without help and support from many sources. We thank them all but we would espe- cially like to acknowledge the following persons: Miss Norman for her encouragement; Mr. Chapman, Dr. Joy, and the Library Staff for their cooperation; Mrs. Hanas, Mrs. Regelman, and Mrs. Schneck for their generous assistance; Miss Sue Hawley for the use of her pictures; Ross Williams and Rene Reynolds for their photography; Felicia Salamendra for her art work; and, finally Mr. Forsythe and Dr. Guiffrida, our fac- ulty advisors, for their invaluable help and long-suffering patience.
