W ittaK cWjbeij Poetry . . . embodies the exaltation, the beauty, the rhythm and the truth of life. Richard Le Callienne Beauty is life when life unveils her holy face. But you are life and you are the veil. Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror But you are eternity and you are the mirror. Kahli! Gibran Suffering is at the heart of every living faith. That is why man can scarcely call himself a Christian for whom the Crucifixion is not a daily suffering. For it is by the hope that surmounts suffering that true tragedy surmounts pain and has always had the power to sweep men out of the commonplace ugliness of ordeal to that exhaltation in which the spirit rises superior to the agony which alone matures it by the act of transcending it. For in suffering man motivated by hope and faith affirms that dignity which is lit by charily and truth . . . True wisdom comes from the overcoming of suffering and sin. All true wisdom is therefore touched with sadness. Whittaker Chambers The Son of God suffered unto death, not that men might not suffer but that their sufferings might be like His. George MacDonald Joy, v.i.: to experience great pleasure or delight. Poetry is the expression of the unfamiliar beauty in the world, the beauty that is the smile upon the face of truth. Edwin Markham The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5: 22,2T 7 I died for beauty, but was scarce Adjusted in the tomb. When one who died for truth was lain In an adfoining room. He questioned softly why I tailed? For beauty I replied. 'And I for truth-themselves are one— We bretheren are he said. Emily Dickinson 10 Truth is inclusive of all the virtues, is older than the sects or schools, and like charity, more ancient than mankind. Amos Bronsen Alcott I came to say a word and I shall say it now. I came to live in the glory of Love and the light of Beauty, which are the reflections of God. I am here, living, and I cannot be exiled from the domain of life. Kahlil Gibran 12 Truth is within ourselves; it takes no rise From outward things, whatever you may believe. There is an inmost centre in us all. Where truth abides in fulness. Robert Browning It's deadly commomplace, but after .all, the commomplace are the greatest poetic truths. R.L. Rather than being a mere pictorial record of events of the previous year, the Kumi Ori is also a Christian publication. It is one means of presenting Christianity in the context of our lives here on campus. The Kumi Ori staff has chosen for its theme this year the concept of Truth”. Bacon 130 f If I 131 132 Think of yourself just as a seed patiently waiting to come up as a flower in the Gardner's good time, up into the real world, the real waking. I suppose that our whole present life, looked back on from there, will seem only a drowsy hall-waking. We are here in the land of dreams. But cockcrow is coming. It is nearer now than when I began. C. S. Lewis We search the world for truth. We call The good, the true, the beautiful, From graven stone and written scroll, And all old flower-fields of the soul; And, weary seekers of the best. We come back laden from our quest. To find that all the sages said Is in the Book our mother's read. John Greenleaf Whittier 134 137 1 138 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know that vae belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in His presence. I John 3:18,19 [ MO Peace, and be at peace with your thoughts and visions. These things had to come to you and you to accept them. This is your share of the eternal burden . . . But know that another shall pierce you with a sudden Painful joy when the figure of God's purpose is made complete. T. S. Eliot I ! Yea, though my lesson be hard it is not hopeless, For the Lord is very patient with his slow scholar. He will wait a while for my weakness— He will help me to read the truth through tears— Surely Thou wilt enlighten me daily by joy and by sorrow And lead me at last, O Lord, to the perfect knowledge of thee. Henry Van Dyke Because you have made us for yourself, our hearts are restless until they can find peace in you. St. Augustine The end of knowledge is to know God, and out of that knowledge to love Him, and to imitate Him, as we may the nearest, by possessing our souls of true virtue. john Milton M2 Faith opens the way to knowledge ... All knowl- edge becomes reverent and all being is open to in- quiry. Understanding is not automatically given with faith; faith makes possible and demands the labor of the intellect that it may understand. Out of our liberal arts college experience, truth becomes a compelling need and the quest for truth is perhaps the only worthwhile occupation. From this journey For truth, beauty and the poetry of life emerge. As with the Psalmist we have chosen the way of truth. It is my hope that this book has pro- voked you to recognize that new poetry we have in Christ Jesus; and to crave that irreducible reality that is in the mind of Christ—this is the only way to avoid the susceptibility to being hollow men. Our close is as C. S. Lewis' Perelandra I, all ready? said the king's voice. Farewell, Friend and Savior, farewell, said both voices. Farewell till we three pass out of fhe dimensions of time. Speak of us always to Maledil as we speak always of you. The splendor, the love, and the strength be upon v U3
