epfist college ichigan DEDICATED TO . Gary Raymond, a man who is known to soma as Henry Wadsworth Raymond and to others affectionately as Barney, or Dad. He is the Director of Student Affairs to his fellow administrators. He is coach to the members of three successful athletic teams. He is the man with the money to most Michigan BIG BOYS. To those in Techniques of Counseling Ps 431 he is the lecturer, discussion leader, and comedian. To a perplexed student he is an empach- etic listener and a satisfactory answer. He keeps things running smoothly, effectively, and off the collar. To some he is discipli- narian, but also friend. We have found him to be a Christian catalyst : a man in- volved with student? with the goal of im- proving not only their effectiveness in serving God. but al- so their expression of Christianity on a practical, daily lev- el. Being involved with others, Mr. Raymond not only teaches, but also shows through his life the beauty and maturity of doing all things to the glory of God .11 2 Lord. May I ask thy blessings on a dull wooden day? My reflexes are sluggish, My mind foggy, My attempts to pray vague and unrewarding. You know the kind of odd-body I am Lord: joyful today and glum tomorrow Glad—mad—dull--devious—thrilled to the shoelaces or just plain blah. 5 6 Won't you lock down upon me Jesus You've got to help me make a stand. Just got tc see me through another day. My body's aching and my time is at hand. I won't make it any other way. M James Taylor ■ The most visible joy can only reveal itself to us when we Ve transformed it, within. It is good to be tired and wearied by the vain search after the true good, that we may stretch out our arms to the Redeemer, 10 which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon in our despair, aga.ns through the awful gta and winter . The student shall he In- dulged witil nothing which the wand calls play, ler this rule be observed with strict- est nicely; for thou who play when they axe young wUl play when lliey arc old. I wish to re mind you of the days we chased the raying sun fielding flowers and after breath less smiling at oar leaping loving. We have love when loving goes. I hope you re member. Richard M. Procey 14 Real isn’t hov, foirSfe made. ' laid the Skin Horse. ' It's a thing that happens to you. When a child lows you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves voa, then you become Real. Does it hurt? asked the Rabbit. Sometimes, said Lhe Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. When you axe Real, you don't wind heing liiiir.11 Does It happen all at Once, like being wound up, he asked, or Nr by bit? It doesn't happen all at once, said the Skin Horse, You become. It takes a long tame. That's why it doesn’t often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to l e carefully kept. Cenerallv, hy the time you art Real, most of your hair hns been loved off, and your eyes drop out, and you get loose in rhe joints and very shahhy. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real, you can’t be ugly, except to people who don't understand. Spencer . 17 Once the realization is accepted that even between the closest human be- ings infinite distances continue to exist, a wonderful living side by side can grow up, if they succeed in lov- ing the distance between them which makes it possible for each to see the other whole against the sky. Rainer Maria Rilke LETTERS 13 Sometimes I want to be alone with myself much more than other times. Maybe itTs as though I want to feel inside and be close to whatever I find or whatever I am. Theodore Isaac Rubin He was a plain man and learned no latin Having left all gold behind he dealt out peace to all us wild men and the weather He ate fish, bread, ...and God's will Dust sandalled his feet He wore purple only once and that was an irony Luci Shaw 20 ROYALTY Once upon a time, in a faraway King- dom the King and Queen decided to have a banquet. All the people ol wealth and quality were invited to the palace. The stepsisters looked forward to the event with great ex- citement and bought costly gowns and jewels to wear. On the night of the occasion, though, an unknown Princess, alias Cinderella, arrived. As she was led into the crowded room every head turned and muimirs went up: ,TWhat a lovely person! 22 23 THE TAMING OF THE SHREW Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign; one that cares for thee, And for thy maintenance commits his body To painful labour both by sea and land, To watch the night in storms, the day in cold, Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe And craves no other tribute at thy hands But love, fair looks, and true obedience-- Too little payment, for so great, a debt. 2b William Shakespeare 1m 26 ARTIST SERIES 27 SWEETHEARTS .... people, people who need people are the luckiest people in the world. 28 31 The theatre will be closing soon, The actors then will all go home. They'll remove the make-up and facade They'll put away the scenery drops, And all the little staging props. Without the thoughts of pleasing any crowd. For all the laughter and applause Has ceased to cater to their cause. And no one has a reason to be proud. For playing to the crowd alone Brings no contentment when they've gone. And all one's left is memories, soon o’er trod. So when the stage is finally cleared, And shadows fall where lights appeared, And when the final curtain falls, Will I be able to say that all my life was played to Cod?
