V-Af. ■k - j' a Dear Graduate of 1969 It is not without good reason that the climactic hours of your educational experience are called commencement. It seems like the end of the journey but in reality it is far more the beginning toward which these years have been pointing. You are now both launched and anchored; launched in that your life's ministry is before you and sails are set to take advan- tage of every God-given opportunity; but anchored in that the great principles of God's Word and a Christian world and life view have in a real measure become yours. There is a certain nostalgia as you look back and review the kaleidoscopic experiences of these most strategic years of life, and a delightful sense of accomplishment and anticipation as you receive the reward of your educational labors and step toward new realms of either further education or Christian service. These experiences are a very normal portion of all those who enter into the joys and sorrows of adult responsibilities. For those who desire like Paul to know His will, see His face, and hear His voice, there will be many similar graduat- ing experiences in which nostalgia, sorrow, and joy become inseparably mixed, May I once again encourage you to keep looking unto Him, the Author and Finisher of our faith. Among these are outstanding scholarship awards, the journalism awards, citizenship award and other superlatives. This year's entertainment centered around the performance of a skit by students in which they impersonated faculty members. Ohio, was Spiritual Emphasis Week speokei in September 23 24 The Royalty committee headed by Carol Conner worked behind the scenes to make Royalty a success Royalty Goes Medieval In King Arthur's Court The decorating committee, directed by Carol Conner, offered to our 1968 Royalty weekend a setting midst the Knights of the Round Table. The atmosphere stood magestic on the night of Coronation as Mr Miller exalted Queen Jan Church and her court. Our Knight of Knights proved gal- lant. accented by Denise Moffet. including Dr. Welch's requested encore. Chopin's Polynaise. Our banquet even- ing. catered by Mr Koetsier, held an atmosphere of musical moods, afforded by Stuart Nordyk. Betty Bouts was chairman for Reverse night activities. The evening was planned around the theme of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Oecora lions were complete with candlelight, grapes and even King Arthur. Royalty was more than glitter and lights It meant hours of planning, decorating and cleaning up afterwards. Held on Campus for the First Time The Annual Seminary Bible Conference was started ten years ago as a time for alumni of the college and area pastors and mis- sionaries as vvell as students to get together for their own spiritual growth and enrichment. Through the years the foremost Bible preachers and teachers in the nation have been on the Confer ence's roster of speakers This year was special: for it marked the first time for the Con- ference to be held on the college campus rather than at Wealthy Street Baptist Church as in previous years. The speakers for this year included Or. Howard Sugden. Dr Warren Wiershe. Dr. Robert T. Ketcham. Dr. Leon Wood, Rev Rob ert Shelton. Dr. N A Wiens. Rev. Charles Wood and Dr Welch J Stratton Shu e t was song leader Rev Joseph Balbach received the VanOsdel award for Alumnus of the Year laon Millet, piano and organ instructor here, was organist for the entire conference 33 Dr Welch coordinated the Conference and served as iis moderato' Dr Wiersbe of Covington. Tom Blossom, edges out a determined opponent Comets End Track Season 1968 MEET SCORES For the past two seasons BBC has enjoyed the privilege of having fine track teams Last year proved to be a high point in its G. R School of the Bible and Music 67 BBC track history. During the regular season of meets BBC met defeat 'Detroit Bible College 0 BBC 2 onfy at the feet of our cross town rival, fhe School of Bible and Midwestern Bible College 28 BBC 71 Music. In the annual tournament meet at the close of the season Grace Bible College (Grand Rapids) 18 BBC 33 GRSBM 75 our Comets came in third place behind those same GRSBM speeds- Michigan Christian Junior College vs BBC rained out ters and Michigan Christian Junior College. BBC missed second ‘Forfeit place in the meet by a mere 2-1 2 points. Another highlight of the season was the record-breaking mile run by Tom Blossom in the Conference meet. Tom set the new MCA A Conference Meet record time at 5 minutes. 2.2 seconds. That brings a total of two Conference records to our college. In 1968 our 880 yard relay Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music 68 1 2 team set a record at 1 minute and 38.3 seconds. Larry Jansen and Coach Norm Kaddati contributed in giving BBC the second place trophy in the M.C.AA Softball League. Sofiball Team Takes Second One of ihe new additions to the athletic program at BBC is that of Softball. Allbough it is not yet a varsity sport, this possibility is not too far in the future. In this the first year of organized sofiball. our Comets did quite well for themselves. Meeting just twice a week fot practice, Norm Kaddatz. the team's player-coach, managed to pull together a team which was second only in the league to Michigan Christian Junior College. At the end of the regulat season the team found only two blem- ishes on their first year record. One of these defeats came in regu- lar division play at the hands of rival GRS8M, winning it in lbs final inning of play The second game of that same double header found BBC getting revenge, the scoring being led by Noim Kaddatz who launched a grand slam home run m the third inning. The only other defeat came at the hands of MCJC in the championship game Both teams had to tolerate lain, mud. and puddles in that final game. Scores Opponent BBC G.R. Rogers. 0. Windmiller. R Conner, and 0. Christman� Soccer Initiated This Year In addition to softball as a new sport at BBC, another baby has been born. Just this past fall, through the initiative of Bruce Love, the son of missionary parents in Brazil and Senior here at the College, soccer became a reality on this campus. Learning much about the game in Brazil, even to the extent where he could play on the semi-professional level, Bruce liked the idea of starting a team here. He proceeded to round up players and start practice sessions. This first year may have been disappointing to the players, but they certainly showed great improvement. The only two scheduled games ended with BBC at the shorter end am) two experienced teams from good-sized schools victorious. Soccer is here to stay. The interest in the sport has grown extensively to the point where almost everyone enjoys it. In Intramural Football As far as the men on campus are con- cerned. the fall semester of school offers the most in intramural sports. Football has become quite important. To almost every athletic minded and bodied individual at 8BC it is the favorite autumn pastime. This year's competition was perhaps the fiercest ever seen here. No team ran away with the championship, but every game presented a real challenge. The records of teams only show the end result of the games: it cannot possibly indicate the cali ber of the teams represented. All the games were exciting to the last second. No one could call a winner until that last second was past. Upon the completion of another good year the ballplayers can look back and be proud of their competitive spirit and sports- manship. Shouts of We re number one' echoed game after game in gym after gym. The most exciting part of it all was that Coach Gary Raymond's Roundbalfers proved it. Compiling a 16-9 overall record, the Comets shared the league championship with an 8-2 tally, losing only two heartbreakers to Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music and Michigan Christian Junior Col- lege In the conference tournament this year Baptist fought past the same two teams who defeated them earlier in the year and won the shooting match. They advanced to the National Christian College Athletic Association District Tournament and met defeat at the hands of two experienced schools of larger enrollment: Grace of Winona Lake and Kentucky Christian of Grayson. This is just one of the things added to the cheerloading repetoirn this year. Cheerleaders Spark Enthusiasm v Mere pyramids are just part of the game. This year the cheerleading squad included two sophomores, Linda Jensen and Captain Donna Squires and four freshmen. Linda Hoskins, Jane Kancngie ter. Kathy Rehn and Marilyn Wood. These girls cheered for over 20 varsity basketball games as well as for the junior varsity team throughout the bas- ketball season. Linder Donna's leadership, the squad tried many new ideas and added many of them to their repetoire. These included new routines, new cheers, and pom-poms to add flash and flair to their cheers and routines. The girls also learned new mounts to encourage spectator enthusiasm. Among these was a pom-pom routine to go with the school song. Sponsoring a Beggar's Day , the cheerleaders raised the money to buy their own pom poms. Each girl dressed as a beggar and carried a cup all day and begged for money. With the addition of the gym in the multi-purpose building, the squad was able to work out acrobatic routines with the trampoline for half-time enter- tainment. 51 Organizations Joe Slaughter—President Rick Kcole—Vice President Ruth Cole—Treasurer Council Student Council served as a laison between administra- tion and student body. Through their efforts the dress code was relaxed and it was made possible for women to take late pers on campus. Chosen by the Council, the Student Project Committee raised the money to purchase a 1969 Chevrolet station wagon to be used only for Christian service hy the students Headed by sophomore Budd Teare. the committee also included sophomores Norm Kaddat7 and Dwight Gregory, senior Jim Courey and Secretary Han Williams, a freshman. The council sponsored Royalty Weekend and the Sweet- hearts Banquet and chose the committees who planned them. Student Council day each week in chapel was planned by senior Dean Wheeler. Virginia Sisson advised the staff. It included wider coverage of local and national events as well as campus life and concerns. The paper covered national speakers in Grand Rapids such as President Richard Nixon and civil rights advocate Dick Gregory. The paper also included space for student opinion and faculty opinion. The Herald had two special issues. The first was an eight page special for Royalty Weekend including a color photo- graph of Queen Jan Church. Ooug Taylor Touring Chorale Reached More Churches This year, for the first time, the Touring Chorale had an extensive church ministry Second semester the group performed in churches every other Sunday as well as going on Spring Tour in the East In churches the chorale, directed by Desmond Bell, took a whole service providing choral numhers testimonies, and special music from gospel teams and instrumen talists. This year s tour took the Chorale to the Eastern United States as well as Canada. During the week, their maior stops were Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Washington. O.C., Atlantic City. New Jersey and London. Ontario. Canada Their concerts were centered around the Person Jesus Christ in His creation of the world. His condescension. His crucifixion, and our communion and final rest with Him The numbers trcluded psalms, spirituals and hymns.
