GRAND RAPfDG BAPTIST COLLEGE. AND geminary 1962 ''I;a ‘ AV-ivI-1 ■ •■ V §p Mm FOREWORD Chapel time! The call of the 9:50 bell to assemble as a school before God in worship conveys varied mean- ings to different people. Inspiration, comfoit, help, solace - these and many other thoughts flash across the mind at the mention of that sa- cred half hour. Be- cause we feel that this period in which the soul communes with God is the very core of our training, we inaugurate the 1962 Kumi-Oriwith this view of our gather- ing place - empty, so that you of the Baptist College and Seminary can summon to your mind’s eye the scenes that meant so much to you in this past year. 3 IPBIB OF FOREWORD DEDICATION RACUtlV CLASSES organisations contents AJPUETICQ AcnvmES DORMUFE ADVERHSE UEN TS DfREOORV V y? DEDICATION It's happening! Statesmen of the School have dreamed of it, students have wishfully longed for it. Saints in the mid western area have prayed for it, and NOW, undet the able direction of Pres- ident Welch, the nebulous dream con- suming a score of years is materializing in this Decade of Development. ” Upon 64 acres of ground located in the northeast section of Grand Rapids, a beautiful campus has been visualized by the architects and now the entire college stands on tiptoe waiting for that in- evitable commencement of construction, ground breaking day. May 6, 1962. It is to this campus and to the vigo- rous leadership forging our Decade of Development that we dedicate the 1962 Kumi-Oii. THE EXECUTIVE BOARD 10 THE ADVISORY COUNCIL : V. v 2 TUB- FR££fDENT Christian Colleges and Seminaries of today face a distinct challenge which may be unparalleled in the history of Christian education. Faithfulness to the Word of God, both Living and written, stands as the foremost issue. Too seldom recog- nized, it is at this very point that the lines are drawn in Christian schools between historic orthodoxy and new religious movements. Any seminary dedicated to the training of men of God for pulpit ministries or missionary fields must maintain a high standard of theological instruction built firmly upon the Bible as the verbally inspired Word of God. Any Christian College dedicated to the training of the whole man must provide a balanced program of Christian voca- tional and cultural instruction. Yet every facet of learning, every class of instruction, whether in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences, must find their focal point and the reason for their existence in the Word of God. Other challenges confront the Christian school: the challenges of perpetuating historic Christianity by sending out thoroughly prepared prophets of God for the pulpits of tomorrow; the challenge of instilling a Christian phi- losophy of life and of counteracting the false premises of life often found in the framework of secular education; and the challenge of providing moral and spiritual answers for the questioning minds of an intellectual and dis- turbed age. The Grand Rapids Baptist College and Seminary gladly accepts this mid-twentieth century challenge. The administration, faculty, and executive board are dedicated to provide an educational program of academic ex- cellence plus spiritual commitment. 12 I DEAN OF THE SE UfNARY LEONJ. WOOD, A. We of the 3apti$t College and Seminary are proud of the work of this group and of its capable director, Mr. Michael Doonan. The Voice of the Students is the monicker usually hung on an organization such as this, and we would not hesitate to apply that well-worn cliche to the 1962 group. student counc l Under the leadership of President Jack Bellairs, the council sponsored in addition to its more menial duties a Buy a book for our library campaign which proved to be highly successful, and a Sweethearts' Banquet in February, also one of the year's highlights. The problem of class rings also was dented, the groundwork being laid for the inception of this custom in the near future. President Bellairs was sent to the National Association of Evangelical Schools convention at Mishawaka, Indiana, in the capacity of an observer. 78 YEARBOOK SlAFE A yearbook to one who has not had the opportunity of being on a staff, is a thing of excitement, but to those who have been through the mill, “ it is a different story. Inflexible, highly rigid deadlines to meet, pictures to take, layouts to arrange, copy to be composed, and a whip cracking advisor pose a real problem, yet a stimulating challenge. We of the Kumi-Ori staff hope that you are enjoying YOUR yearbook. We constructed it with you in mind, and trust that it will be something that in future days you will refer to countless times to recapture the golden mo- ments of your schooling.
