Text from Pages 1 - 116 of the 1959 volume:

Here recorded for posterity are the pictorial memories of the school year ’58-’59 at the Grand Rapids Baptist The- ological Seminary and Bible Institute as seen through the eyes of Kumi Ori. 1 Dr. R. T. Ketcham, National Representative of GRARBC. Dr. R. T. Ketcham was the main speaker for the 50th anniversary of the GRARBC, and brought a series of messages on the church of Jesus Christ. He challenged each Christian to win one soul to the Lord in the next year. Dr. Ketcham is a great prayer warrior and leader. In one years time he prays definitely, by name, for each student in our schools. Even though he is almost entirely blind, he continues to master the Word of God, and in- crease his knowledge by reading and studying many books. Dr. Ketcham and Dr. Fuller exchanging notes. 2 Officers and Committee Chairmen of GRARBC: Left to Right: Rev. David Smith, Rev, Reginald L. Matthews, Mr. Elton Bidstrup, Mr. Blower Baker, Mrs. Louis VanderKaay, Rev. Frank Thatcher, Rev. Gordon Roloff, and Rev. Maurice Horn. edlicatiosi We wish to dedicate the 1959 edition of Kumi Ori, to the Grand Rapids Association of Regular Baptist Churches in recognition of their “Golden Anniversary.” Fifty years of illustrious history has seen the oldest Inde- pendant Baptist Association in the Nation grow into one of the largest local associations in the United States of America. The Grand Rapids Baptist Association was formed in 1843. As early as 1908 a doctrinal declension was evident. This caused a group of 14 churches to meet with the Calvary Baptist Church to withdraw from the Grand Rapids Baptist Association. They formed the Grand River Valley Baptist Association. In 1920 the name was changed to the Michigan Orthodox Baptist Associa- tion and in 1928 the name was again changed to the present Grand Rapids Association of Regular Baptist Churches. Today there are 87 churches with 12,712 members in an area bounded by North Adams in the south, Jackson in the east, and Calumet in the north. The projects of the Association include the Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary and Institute, the Michigan Christian Home Association, the Baptist Testi- mony, and the Women’s Missioary Union. May God continue to bless your co-operative labors for His Glory. To each individual member of this faithful group we say —this is your Kumi Ori. 3 Qfunie tii J etubsAAiiip, ActUtitieA AUdeticA. ClaAAeA, This hand reflects experience and sound judgment. As Acting President Dr. Keithley gives us wise counsel and helpful guidance in every aspect of our school life. Working with the Faculty and the Board of Trustees, deci- sions are made that reveal capable leadership. The important ministry of public relations is also performed by our President. The hand of the Dean affects every student's life in some way or another. Academic prob- lems and matters invariably find their way to his desk. In the classes, each Faculty member leads enquiring minds” into rigorous disciplines. 7 P uAe tt' i Jlette i WHAT IS THAT IN THINE HAND? The importance of the hand to the efficient service of the body can hardly be overestimated. The frequent references in the Bible to the use of the hand, whether it be God's hand or man's, is quite surprising, since it appears nearly 1600 times. The Lord once asked Moses a question we might profit- ably consider — “What is in thine hand? To be sure Christian workers should not have empty hands. The Psalmist wrote of a, “two-edged sword in their hand.” That sword is the word of God, so the writers to the Hebrews said. Every Christian worker should seek to be skilful in the use of that sword. To that end this School came into being and may God ever preserve it for that accomplishment. 8 DR. KEITHLEY “The steps of a righteous man are ordered of the Lord.” An important step in a Christian’s life is his preparation for serv- ice. At the Moody Bible Institute Dr. Keithley completed the Bible Missions course, and then attended the Northern Baptist Seminary. He pastored in Sil- ver Lake, Wisconsin and Silvis, Illinois, where he added a wife to his responsibilities and joys, who served with him thirteen years in Buffalo, New York and twenty-one years in the Berean Baptist Church of Grand Rap- ids. There he felt called into another type of Christian serv- ice. At the Baptist Theological Seminary the door was open for him to fill the position of in- terim president. Certainly the Lord has qualified him through rich experience in administra- tion and counseling. Dr. W. Wilbert Welch, Chairman of the board Dr. Wilbert Welch began his preparation at Bob Jones University, where he obtained his A.B. degree with a major in Bible. The following fall the Lord opened the doors of evangelism in Western Mich- igan. In 1944 they returned to Bob Jones where he obtained his Masters degree, and later, his Doctorate in Philosophy, with a major in Systematic Theology. From a thriving ministry in Rome, Georgia, the Lord directed their steps to assume the pastorate of Calvary Baptist Church of Muskegon in 1950. Dr. Welch’s interest in our school began at its very inception, for he was one of its part-time instructors. He was elected to the Board in 1953 and became its chairman three years later. His major ambition for the school is that it be high in its field of Christian instruction, honoring the Lord by giving its students the best possible training. 10 Gowncil Perhaps the most important function of the administration is the Executive Council which determines the policies, the standards and the goals of the school. Once a month they study the details and problems which accumulate from such an educational system. Present needs must often be studied in view of long-range plans. In this way the Council seeks to do a job for the glory of God. Left to right, hack row. William R. Balbach, Otto C. Benjamin, Harold H. Hess, John J. DeVries, Dr. Horace C. Jones, Rev. Reginald L. Student Council The Student Council plays an important part in the life of the school. The purpose of the council is to discuss and to assist in the supervision of various student activities. Henry Kik as speaker; Thanksgiving Banquet, witl Mr. William Hopper; Tips on Hospitality—Home and Abroad, with Mrs James Reese and Mrs. E. G. Wray as our speakers, with a formal tea closing out the evening partially depicting a typical Philippine tea, as well as ar American tea. Farther along in the year there was a March Musicale for the husband: and wives; Third Annual Alumnae Night, with the speakers being the Alumni A get-together on the latest. Several highly capable gospel teams have gone out from the school this year, providing music and minis- tering the Word for various youth meetings and serv- ices in the surrounding churches. Such teams as the “Voices of Victory’’ have travelled through much of the Middle West, including Michigan, Indiana, Illi- nois, and Iowa, while preaching that “the day of Christ is at hand.” QoAsp L Standing: Richard Tyson, Leon McBride, Diane Grahl, Marilyn Mickaro, Doris McBride, Sandra Bensinger Left to Right: Sharon Wiles. The diverse interests and concerns of our hearts are evi- denced by the many different types of activities in which we engage as individuals. Our common Christian world-and-life view, however, gives us a unity of purpose. Our common conviction is that we are to take the position of a servant in this present world. Consequently, we find our students laboring as “bond-slaves” in many different capacities in the joint effort of gospel proclamation. 33 34 Charles Wood — Little Black Lake StuJUnt fLCLltoAA Chuck Reed — Wyoming Park Joe Crawford—Muskegon Hgts. After these initial preparations he is ready to study — pro- vided no one meanders by to interrupt. Preparation completed, Penny now begins Athletici. The hand of work and service must also find time for pleasure and recreation if the whole man is to be developed correctly. For some this means basketball. Both the men and the women have teams which participate in the City League and with other local cage teams driving our winter sporting season. Fair weather brings our softball enthusiasts into action on the local diamonds of the city. We sincerely believe that such an athletic pro- gram not only helps to keep the individual balanced in his activities but helps one to main- tain proper physical fitness. 53 £opJujJi lecutt Guest gets set to slam one Left to Right — Duane Guest, Tom Homrich, A1 Stcbbin, Lloyd Early, Dick Tyson, Bob Wadde?
