KUMI ORI 1956 Grand Rapids Baptist Theological Seminary And Bible Institute KUMI-ORI Let's rise and shine for Jesus In this dark world of sin; Let's tell abroad the story That we have peace within; Let us of B.T.S. Our wondrous Lord confess. Kumi Ori, Rise and Shine. O Lord, we pray for guidance, To let our light so shine Before the world of sinners, That they may see we're thine. O bless our school we pray. And help us every day, To Kumi Ori, Rise and Shine. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. Daniel 12:3 Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven. Matthew 5:16 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the Sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world. Philippians 2:15 Arise, therefore, and be doing, and the Lord be with thee. The words and message come from Isaiah 60:1. Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. DEDICATION Dr. D. O. Fuller, Pastor The Church Board And the things which thou hast heard of me among many witnesses the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. It was the de- sire of the late Rev. O. W. Van Osdel, D.D., former pastor of the Wealthy St. Baptist Church, to establish a Baptist school of theology here in Grand Rapids, and although he did not live to see it, his hopes and prayers were fulfilled. God had laid a similar burden on the hearts of several local pastors and so it was that in 1940 a meeting of these pastors and interested laymen was held to consider the possibility of establishing a theologi- cal school. Some time later after much prayer and de- liberation the Baptist Institute came into existence. — 6 — The Student Body kumi - ORI 1956 It began as an evening school on January 7, 1941; ten part-time instructors were engaged, and classes were held in the Wealthy St. Church, as they are at this time also. In 1944 a day school in Bible Institute and a School of Theology were added. In 1948 the name was changed to the Grand Rapids Baptist Theological Semin- ary and Bible Institute, and in 1955 a Five Year Theologi- cal course was inaugurated. From the beginning more than half of the students tuition has been supplied by this church and others who have the school on their budgets. Entrance of the School It is with the deepest gratitude and heart-felt ap- preciation that we dedicate KUMI ORI 1956 to the Wealthy St. Baptist Church. Mere words could never sufficiently express our feelings, but upon investigation and examination of these sentiments we find that our heart cry is Praise God from Whom all blessings flow . The Members of Wealthy Street Church CURRICULAR SIDEGLANCES — 9 — Wrong line! But it took me two hours to get up to this table! Do you mean I have to go back and start all over? Ah, the joys of registration . . . You would think those books were printed on gold-leaf judging the price you have to pay for them . . . Yes, here we are at the beginning of a school year . . . It's, here we are AGAIN for most of us . . . Professor Faber's message Are You Spiritual in the opening assembly was a real challenge . . . What would a new year be like without new rules? I don't know; they always seem to come up with something . . . and to think that some thought that they were strict around here last year . . . Professors Balbach and Wilson were added to the staff of fulltime instructors ... if things keep growing like this, well soon be bigger than Michigan State . . . hope we have our own building by then . . . — 10 — Somebody had a good idea when they divided Monday morning prayer meetings up into groups . . . Say, but did you notice the new couples this year . . . rules or no rules, you just can't keep them apart . . . and the old steadies ; this place just wouldn't be the same without them . . . The Michi- gan Association of Regular Baptist Churches held their annual meeting at Wealthy Street again this year . . . was it so popular with the students be- cause of the classes they skipped or because President Hakes was on the list of speakers . . . The student reception party was quite the thing this year; main feature was a magician, Mr. John De Vries . . . Dr. Bob Ketchum's chapel sermons on The Will of God and How To Eat the Word of God were a great blessing and I trust that Ketchum Week had a real impact on the spiritual lives of all of us . . . — II — The ACCC met in Grand Rapids this year . . . they must have realized the importance of our school ... at least they honored us with three of their top officials for chapel services . . . After an official tour of inspection, the O.K. was given for government help for the Vets among us — that was a real answer to prayer . . . From all reports, that faculty and board dinner must have been quite a thing . . . what did you do with all those ties, Mr. Wilson? And parson, where did you-all get that race-track- money ? News Flash! Pope sees vision of the gentile figure of Jesus ! and if you weren't at Wealthy Street to hear what Dr. Fuller had to say about it, you really missed out on something ... he just pointed out the results of similar visions in the Scriptures. I haven't noticed any such changes in the Roman Catholic Church or the Pope . . . not too surprised . . . — 12 — Say, that Seminary Wives Fellowship is really geared to the students needs this year . . . first a lecture on How to Prepare Economical Meals ; then sometime later at a party, we had the privilege of seeing our prof's before the truth or consequences committee. let's be quick with that whistle, Milton . . . The men in the white coats, driving the little white truck, threw quite a scare into us ... we were all relieved to find they only wanted to test for T.B. Glad to report that no one passed out . . . some looked like they were close to it, though . . . EXTRA! Bill Wilson cops the ping- pong championship (this is not the Wild Bill of Comstock Park's Speedrome). Con- gratulations Bill ... it must be that string tie of his . . . Things have been pretty quiet around here since the time that the new school paper was begun . . . nobody dares to do anything for fear that one of the B.T.S. Beacon reporters will see it and put it in print . . . One consolation: about half the copies aren't readable . . . — 13 Globetrotters beware . . . the B.T.S. Basket-breakers are on the march . . . they came out on top in their league and you can be sure they got the royal welcome they deserved . . . Carol Swanson's artistic a- bilities played no small part in it . . . The Missionary Conferama caused a mix up in classrooms for a few days at the beginning of second semester, but it was well worth it . . . besides the thirty or more booths depicting various phases and places of mis- sionary work there were missionary speakers and panel discussions . . . This year has been one of special missionary emphasis .... the report of the slaying of the five missionaries in Equador makes one stop and look at his own life . . . the Things of this world don't mean much in the light of eter- nity . . . Reverend Barnet spent a very en- lightening and inspiring week with us . . . in his theme The Magna Carta of Missions he brought out many points that were new to some of us . . . through new world con- ditions, there has been a great change in missionary work and it is of the utmost im- portance that we are prepared to meet these new situations . . . — 14 — quiet around the dorms and school these days . . . are the kids scared or just engrossed in their outlines of the outlines of the etc. . . . It's been a good year . . . the last one here for some ... all that remains to be done is to gather up the loose ends . . . term papers . . . exams . . . gradua- tion. We trust that the Lord will use the messages in word and song that were given out on the choir trip this year . . . it's supposed to be a spring tour, but you wouldn't have known it from the weather, but then snow is nice in April . . . Time to buckle down harder again . . . where do those professors dig up their questions? . . . strangely — 15 ADMINISTRATION — 17 — EXECUTIVE BOARD Chairman: Rev. Howard Keithley Vice Chairman: Rev. A principal one this year has been the introduction of our new five-year theological course. In previous years the school has had a five-year program made up of two years of pre-Seminary work, followed by the three years of Seminary proper. This program served well, but two factors in particular made a change to the present course advisable. First, the former course contained a minimum of general education which is so desirable if the Christian worker is to have the most effective contact with people from every walk of life. Second, the advanced classes of the Seminary level, designed especially for incoming College graduates, were encountered after only two years of preparation. This worked a distinct hardship on our students. The school has been aware for some time that such a change was advisable. And the fact that other Bible Schools were introducing courses similar to that contem- plated only made this realization the more certain. However, various reasons necessi- tated postponement for a time. But now this year the Lord has made the new program a reality for us, and it is counted a major cause for thanksgiving. This new course is no longer composed of two divisions as before, but runs con- tinuously for the five years. If is constituted of three main emphases. Three is the Bible-centered stress of the many Bible Institute classes included, such as Bible Survey and Bible Anaysis. There is the wider background provision of classes in general education, such as English, History, Sociology, Speech, Psychology, and Greek. And, especially in the last two years, there is the more advanced Seminary level of work, so desirable for the finest service for God. Thus constituted in these three important areas, the course affords a fine, well-rounded means of preparation, and the student may enter directly from High School. The school is grateful to God also that the course has been fully approved for veteran’s benefits. This approval has not been easy to obtain for this course due to the many College type of classes it includes. Assurance must be provided that each measures up o that given in any standard Collage. But God has given us splendid teaching so that the necessary standard has been met to provide this important benefit for us also. — 23 — STUDENT BODY 25 SEMINARY SENIORS William H. Bowler A. B. When only an indifferent handful of the flock turns out and then ignores the mes- sage that was so prayerfully prepared, the phrase is heard, You are what you are becoming . When the high schoolers with such a glorious potential but so much carelessness will NOT take part in young people's activities, then . . . You are what you are becoming . When, after being told, Wait 'til you get some grey hairs before telling ME what I need, and the question comes, Am I really cut out for the Lord's work, the thought returns, You are what you are becoming . When the bedridden grandmother only turns her head to the wall when offered a word of encouragement, and the drunk on lower Monroe with a curse rips his tract to shreds, and one more door is slammed at the mention of spiritual things, once again is the time to remember . . . You are what you are becoming . Bu there is another side to the story, because when that Junior High girl accepts the Lord, and the sceptic listens to the Word with respect for it, and the congregation is stirred, and the young people start witness- ing, and the hospital patient is cheered, and a bum sobs his way to the Lord, then, praise God for the words .... you are what you are be- coming . MUSIC Gospel Team Girl's Sextet School Choir CHURCH WORK MISSION WORK TRACT CLUB The membership fee of this newcomer to B.T.S. is the scant sum of one dollar. That's a real bargain because it entitles the new mem- ber to a packet of thirty well chosen tracts each month. We are happy to report that a large number of the students joined the club. Many of us can think of someone that was led to the Lord Jesus Christ through a tract, but did you ever think of the many advan- tages this silent messenger has over even personal witnessing? Here are just a few; they can go anywhere and at very little expense; they know no fear; never tire; don't mind scoffs, jeers, or taunts; never lose their temper; and they always stick to their story. BIBLE CLUBS VISITATION — 80 Church Canvassing ACTIVITIES — 83 — VAN OSDEL HALL Praying and working together makes dorm life in Van Osdel Hall a pleasant one. Our private devotion- al times and our dorm prayer meet- ings — held once a week — make our fellowship with the Lord; Mr. and Mrs. Haugh, our dorm parents; and each other one of real blessing. Mom and Pop Haugh have a nice lively family of sixteen girls this year. — 84 — r SPURGEON HALL Tfme and circumstances won't ever erase the precious memories of Dorm Life! This has been a joyous year in the Lord that will be remem- bered throughout all our lives — especially the prayer meetings where our hearts were joined in one accord to share the joys and sorrows with one another and where we were drawn closer to the Lord. — 85 BOY’S DORM One might think that the chief occupation of the denizens of Charles Street Hideaway is creating noise. This is NOT so! Actually, they spend a great deal of time studying. Fre- quent times of real spiritual fellow- ship among the men are a great blessing while such things as closet space, dorm duties, and rules (ugh) are usually accepted as the tribula- tions that work patience. So you see, the noise is but a by-product of ant hill activity. — 86 — STUDENT COUNCIL We, the members of the Student Council, have been elected as rep- resentatives from each class to form a group for the purpose of promot- ing the general welfare of the student body and of maintaining harmony between ourselves and the faculty. Through the past year, we have been emphasizing the need of more school spirit and have sought to promote this through various recreational activities and the organization of a school paper, but more important than a school spirit, is a spirit- ual school . With this goal in mind, we seek to glorify our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, throughout every aspect of our daily life in school. — 87 — SEMINARY WIVES’ FELLOWSHIP This Fellowship is always a highlight of the school year for the wives of the Seminary men. Meetings are held monthly and present a wonderful opportunity to pro- mote a better acquaintance among the wives, to have a time of real Christian fellowship with one another, and to be strengthened spiritually. An interesting and outstanding program is planned each month. These programs have been made up of a panel discussion in which the wives of the Faculty partici- pated, special speakers, and a party in December to which the husbands were invited. Each month we undertake a new missionary project aimed toward helping one of the school's missionary alumni. The officers of the Fellowship elected at our first meeting are: LaVerne Krueger, president; Alice Holmes, vice president; Marilyn Jennex, secretary-treasurer; and Beverly Wessell, project chairman. Mrs. Leon Wood acted as our advisor. We do thank the Lord for Seminary Wives' Fellow- ship and feel that it has contributed a great deal to our spiritual benefit this year. — 88 — PRAYER BANDS Every Thursday morning from 7:30 to 8:00 the missionary prayer bands meet. Each group prays for a particular field; frequent missionary letters keep them alerted to new and special needs. The groups and their leaders are: Home Missions, Far East, Inter-Varsity, Doug Gray Harold Rittenhouse Wayne Anderson European, Africa, Jewish, Richard Martin Bill Carmichael Gordon Duram Hiawatha Land, India, General Missions, Lyman Simpson Bertha Tunison Charles Brace Alaska, South America, Herwin Scheltema Allen Stebbins CHIOR TOUR IU, iU Glen Pdrlc Baptist Church, Gary, Indiana The Sextet sings The museum in Chicago ii! II Sing unto the Lord, bless his name, shew forth His salvation from day to day. For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised . . (Ps. 96; 2, 4.) Showing forth his salvation from day to day was done not only by our scheduled concerts through- out the year, but also by passing out tracts and personal wit- nessing in various cities while on our annual choir tour. The greater part of our tour was in the state of Indiana; however, we did cross over into Illinois for a concert in Harvey. We too in soma points of interest such as the Museum of Science and In- dustry in Chicago, the Powerama of the General Motors Cor- poration in Indianapolis, and the Capital Building of Indiana. At the latter we were privileged to sing for the government employees. Many blessings were received and given by each member of the choir in our pre-service prayer sessions, we can only thank and praise our Wonderful Lord, and say with the song writer JESUS OUR LORD WE ADORE THEE. PROUD, Manager — 102 — General Manager and Mrs. William Kuiper, Sr Six years ago Radio Station WFUR experienced a change in management; the new owners courageously defied the premises and thinking of today's broadcasters, and returned to the fundamental concepts of the industry. It was a bold step in these days of frenzy for the almighty dollar! Although WFUR is a commercial station, it has fostered the broadcasting of those programs conducive to the Moral and Spiritual betterment of the community it serves. It has refused advertising of any type that will tend to destroy the Importance of family life and community growth. There are those interested in be-bop jazz, and forms of entertainment contrary to community welfare and good standards of broadcasting; suryeys by WFUR have proved that Hymns, Band, Folk and Classical Music far excell all others in popularity and general appeal. Seeking to serve its motto: FOR GOD, HOME AND COUNTRY, WFUR believes that programs must be beneficial to the families in its broadcast radius; programs should be conceived and presented to the Glory of God. Towards this end, WFUR is dedicated in serving the community. It is our belief that if our People subscribe to these principles this community and our nation will be blessed. The Bible states: Righteousness exalteth a Nation, but Sin is a reproach to a People. You may have a part in this community venturel You can tell others of your appreciation of the programs; you can pray for God's blessing on the management as it pursues the policies of the station; and you can tell WFUR sponsors you enjoy their efforts to bring better broadcasting to Western Michigan. furniture Citij 33road.(casting Corporation Grand Rapid' 4, Michigan 399 Garfield Avenue, S.W.
