Saved dur- ing his high schoo1 days, led to the Simpson Bible School in Seattle, Washington, and then providentially guided to our own school from which he graduated with the first Seminary Class in June of 1949, Prof. Victor Matthews1 experience bears every indica- tion of Steps well ordered of the Lord.' Completing his A.B. wcrk at Calvin College in 1952, Prof. Matthews received his B.D. from B.T.S. I hat same year. Recognizing his natural teaching ability, our school board retained him as Evening School instructor from 1949 to 1951 while he pastored the Paris Baptist Church (1946-1950) and the First Baptist Church of Oakfield (1950-1951). In the fall of 1951, Prof. Matthews assumed his duties as fuil-time instructor in our Day School. As Dean of men, we have found in Mr. Matthews a sympathetic listener and a wise counselor. As instructor he shall always be remembered for his copious notes, extensive outlines, and his 'just one sentence mere. We give thanks for this man of God, and in appreciation for all he has done for us and for our school, we affectionately dedicate to Prof. Victor Matthews this 1955 edition of KUMI-ORI. They enable us to determine to what ex- tent God's will has been fulfilled in cur lives during the time being appraised. They also bring to mind the impressive number of the Lord's blessings which have highlighted our experiences during the past. With these values in view we look back over the 1954-55 academic year. Each member of the student body and of the faculty must discover for himself, of course, the degree to which he permit- ted the desires of the heavenly Father to to be realized in his life. I sincerely trust that the atmosphere and the activities of the school have contributed substan- tially to each one's growth in grace. I believe that, from my point of vantage, I was able to see encouraging evidences of such progress in the lives of many. Surely we would be cjuilty of gross ingratitude did we not ta e note of the many manifestations of our Lord's love and faithfulness with which our way has been brightened since the last Kumi Ori was published. The splendid group of high calibre young people who have made up our studert body. . . . The high morale that has characterized dormitory life. . .. The almost total absence of disci- plinary problems . . . The never-to-be- forgotien experiences in chapel . . . The fine facully-student relationship , . . The remembrance of these, and many others, kindle a fire in our heart under the sac- rifice of praise! Yet, while the past has its fascinations, the future of our students interests me as well. Standing on the vantage point of the Ju- dean hills it is easy to hurdle the barrier of time, language, and custom. Bethel, Bethle- hem, Bethany seem like Hometown, U.S.A., and the Bible events like yesterday's news. You herd sheep with Abraham, fight with Joshua, wonder with the Queen of Sheba at Solomon's glory, and walk with the Sav- ior in Galilee and Samaria. You stand on the stage of History and see the Drama of Redemption unfold, and the pathos of the Incarnation-Crucifixion- Prof. Faber, Sphin Scene Resurrection climax puts its fingers to your throat and begins to choke you. But you are released, for this is not your death but your life, for Christ died for your sins according to the Scriptures. The tension of the life about you snaps you back into troublous today. Barbed wire barriers, gun emplacements, and ragged refugees make the unnatural border of a partitioned Palestine and spell trouble for Arabs and Jews. The U.N., the government, the mosque, and the synagogue have not been able to solve the problems of the people, but in the land of the Bible the Christ of the Scriptures is not wanted. The dorm mother, Miss Margaret Carpenter, is the Dean of Women as well. The girls in Spurgeon Hall have their private devo- tions each morning and evening, so that they can go hand and hand with the Savior each day. A group prayer meeting is held Thursday evenings in which they pray for one another's needs, thus they are knit closely together in Christian fellowship and love for our Lord. — 46 — — 47 — Quiet hours are here at last, But hark! a noise I hear, 'Tis a loud and rumbling blast, Enough to break mine ear. CHARLES STREET HIDffllllfly — 48 — Girl's Fellowship is an organization of B. T. S. which imparts a real spiritual blessing to all who come out to the meetings held at VanOsdel Hall. All includes girls attending Bible Institute, Seminary wives and alumnae. Each meeting has a two-fold purpose: to promote serious thinking through messages given by various speakers such as Professors’ wives and missionaries, and to provide a social time when all may become better acquainted. The officers this year have been: President, Joan Ullery; Vice-Presi- dent, Doris Dexter: and Secretary-Treasurer, Leona Wyckoff. The year got underway with the election of Darlene Young, President; Doris Aardsma, Vice-President and Program Committee Chairman; and Agnes Bowler, Secretary- Treasurer. Mrs. Warren Faber acted as advisor for the Fel- lowship. Pat Rowland and her Pro- ject Committee planned monthly missionary projects in which each of the wives could participate. Some of the projects included a contribution toward a layette for a missionary couple, a canned goods shower for some home missionaries, and a collection of three cent stamps for a tract ministry. Among the speakers heard during the year were Miss Carpenter, Mrs. Fuller, and Professors Faber and Wood. ing such things as the recrea- tional program and chapel praise services. Truly we have experienced the Lord’s goodness and mercy unto us as we have travelled on our tour through Ohio and West Vir- ginia. He is our BEAUTIFUL SAVIOR of whom GLORIOUS THINGS ARE SPOKEN. We count it a real privilege to be able to represent first of all our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and secondly our school. God's blessing has been manifested to us in various wavs on this tour, especially in our pre-service prayer meetings which have been of great spiritual benefit to each member. It was a bold step in these days of frenry for the almighty dollar. Although WFUR is a commercial station, it has fostered the broadcasting of those programs conducive to the Moral and Spiritual betterment of the Community it serves. It has refused advertising of any type that fends to destroy the importance of family life, and Community growth. Its musical programs are based on accepted surveys which have proved that Hymns, Band, Folic and Classical music is preferred by the general public. The motto: FOR SOD, HOME, AND COUNTRY, best describes WFUR'S approach to broadcasting; and it is the firm conviction of the management that programs must be beneficial to the families within the station's broadcast radius, and must be conceived and presented to the Glory of God. Toward this end the the Family Station is dedicated, with the firm belief that if the community sub- scribes to these principles our nation will be blessed. PAUSE AND PONDERI What can you do to assist in this worthy public service? Listen regularly to WFUR, share in the blessings of its many Christian programs; fell your friends about this unique radio station; and pray for its success in bringing the Gospel to this area.
