Wood justly receives much credit for the high scho- lastic standard of our school. Since coming as a full time instructor in 1945, he has both by precept and example led his students in diligent study of the Word. It is not by accident that Seminary graduates now in pastorates preach much from the Old Testament; they caught” an interest in the Hebrew and in the Old Testament message from their professor. All recognize that God has given Dean Wood a natural teaching ability which he has augmented by self-discipline and the formal discipline of careful scholarship. Though his first love is for the Scriptures, his great concern for the welfare of the school is a close second. In addition to teaching duties, he served as Dean of Men from 1947 to 1951, and since the creation of the position in 1951, as Dean of Education. As Dean he has borne the headaches of the enlarged three year course, as well as the many usual duties of the office. Truly he is God's man, and we are thankful that this is God's place for him. V ■ 8 FACULTY — 9 — pResident GERARD KNOL 10 pResi ent’s message All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteous- ness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto ai! good works. II Timothy 3=16, 17 Dear Seniors: The above verses are no doubt a most familiar passage, and it is well that it should be so, because in it we find the basic reasons for the great importance of Bible study. The Creator has not only furnished man, whom He created in His image and after His likeness, with an intellect capable of knowing the universe in which he lives, but 'He has also provided Him with an infallible source of such knowledge, namely, the Holy Scrptures, of which the Holy Spirit is the real author. These Scriptures also furnish him with a knowledge concerning himself, his origin as a creature, his condition as a sinner, the provision for his redemption, and God's purpose for his life after salvation. He is therefore urged to study these Scriptures carefully in oraer that he may so conduci himself in this life as a workman for God that, when his work on earth is finished, he may receive God’s approval. The warning is giver that if he is not an approved workman, he will be ashamed in the day of the Lo.-d's return. These instructions have been carefully given to you by your teachers, and the fact that you are now graduating is proof that you have learrea the rudiments as contained in God's Holy Word for life and godliness. But you have only begun; ihis study is a life-long exercise. We trust that your appetites have been whetted, your thinking capaci+y enlarged and sharpened, but above all, that your hearts have been so filled with a love for God and His Word that you will want to know more and more concerning His will for your lives; and because of His Itove for you, you will always want to do that which is well pleasing in His sight. This study must not be out of compulsion but because of a deep desire wrought by the Holy Spirit in the heart. If these things be so, you will not be unfruitful in the work of the Lord and you will not miss His approval. And now, as you leave this institution of learning, the board and faculty wish to assure you of our continued interest in your spiritual welfare and service for Him. Our prayers will fellow you wherever the Lord may lead, and v e invite you to remain in touch with us so that the fellowship which exists may be strengthened through the years. We also covet your prayers that we may continue faithful to cur blessed Lord and His Holy word until Jesus comes. Maranatha! DAVID OTIS FULLER, Pastor.................................... Chairman W. COOK HOUSE PARENTS “Thy word is a lamp unto my and a light unto my path” Psalm feet, 119:105 SemmARy Life With the dust and excitement of Labor Day still lingering in the air we met once again in the familiar halls of learning. We came with happy smiles, light hearts, and padded billfolds. Somehow we were glad to turn from three months of physical labor and take up the already wellworn notebooks. Our light hearts gained weight when we received our assignments from the eager Professors. Once again the little bulge in the back pocket was gone — not to be felt again for the next nine months. When we returned to school the next day all we had left was the happy smile. But it too was soon replaced by that well-known look that says, How am I ever going to get all my work done? We thought Hebrew would be easy this year. After all, we did know the grammer, didn't we? (Or did we?) Purely a matter of translating a few verses. That last half of the chapter Mr. Wood assigned looks like a cinch. But as we pour over our manuscript it seems like he said the last half of the Pentateuch! Hebrew Exegesis was about the same. We spent hours developing a solution, only to have it vanish in thin air as a few choice words showed us what we failed to take into consideration. Do we sound as if we are bitter? We are not, really. It is just that we are finding that there is very much we need to know. And in order for us to get it all in the short time we have, the teachers have to throw it at us. Let'er come. We can take it. Seminary SeniORS “0 give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy endureih for ever.” Psalm 136:1 In reviewing God’s dealing with us as a class, we can truly say with the Psalmist that God has been good to us. n redeeming us from a life of sin and giving that peace and joy which passes all human under- standing, He has shown forth His goodness. With His call to the service of proclaiming the good news of the Gospel, He has likewise bestowed upon us the needed ability to be good servants of Jesus Christ. He has equipped us with a thorough knowledge of His Word through the instruments of learned professors who, themselves, have a real love for His Word. These men, endowed by God, have sought to sharpen our tools of learning and give a clear insight into His Word and of the approaching problems which will confront us. With this training behind us, and by the help of God. we, as Seniors, are looking forward to serving the Lord in whatsoever field He has called us. Whether it be the mission field, the pastorate, or other full- time service, our one aim and the supreme goal of our lives is to point men and women to the Lamb of God who died for them. It is with thanksgiving in cur hearts, and praise upon our lips for all He has done for us that we leave these familiar halls and go forward armed with His Word and empowered by His Spirit to meet the foe on very hand. This buzzer was to greet us every morning for months ahead in school, and with the first sound the great rush for the washroom down the hall began. Half an hour later we find ourselves seated among a group of blurry-eyed students at the breakfast table. Six-thirty is earlier than usual for most of us. The fellows from Spurgeon Hall help to make our mealtimes occasions of laughter and unforgettable Christian fellowship. Another part of dorm life that always will be remembered is the dish duty that we so willingly fulfill when it comes our turn. Towel and water fights are always a part of this task, but we always manage to have the dishes stacked away before it is time to leave for school. The average dormitory student is busy throughout the day with classes in the morning and employment in fhe afternoon. After the devotions at the close of the evening meal, a time is usually set aside for relaxation and recreation among the students. Many rush down to the ping-pong room while others of us gather around the piano to join in singing the expression of our hearts. Study hours begin at 7:30 P. M. and continue until 9:30 P.M. This time proves a blessing to each one of our hearts as we meditate on things we have learned in school that day, and also as we prepare for the lessons of the coming day. The day is brought to a dose with personal private devotions on the part of every girl. Trust in Him at all times: ye people, pour out your heart before Him: God is a refuge for us. (Psalm 62:8) — 33 — o M, BiBle institute A? Second L. KWAST President m W Vean June, 1953 — it seems but yesterday that we were introduced to the Grand Rapids Baptist Theological Seminary and Bible Institute; it seems but yesterday, and yet it was two Septembers ago. It is difficult to express the gratitude of our hearts for the faculty and administration who have been instrumental in making our stay a most blessed one. We have come to realize more fully the faithfulness of our Heavenly Father who by His Holy Spirit has directed us into this training whereby we might be able to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Oft times we have recognized the opposition of the Evil One who would seek to bring discouragement and defeat, but each of us has learned, and can say with Paul, that I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me, and we know that without Him we can do nothing. Our prayer as a graduating class is that our school may continue to grow with its mind stayed on God Almighty, ever drawing nearer to Him. Untrained fingers struggle frantically to keep up with the steady stream of words, and an occasional, Oh my aching arm, is audible as we evening school students endeavor to capture on paper the words of wisdom for which we will be held account- able on our next exam. Or perhaps it's a different type of class, where we have questions fly- ing thick and fast. As the professor chooses his victim, many of us strive to look dumber than usual in a futile attempt to get out of the line of fire. However, whether one or the other, in spite of struggle or strain, how very thankful we are that there is such a place as evening school where we who are unable to attend school daily can come and learn more about our dear Lord and Saviour. We trust that the One who has burdened our hearts to seek this training, will so direct us that hence- forth our service for Him will be more effective. With our increased knowledge of the Word, and an understanding of the greater respon- sibility which is now ours, we hope to go forth as more able ambassadors for Jesus Christ. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.” II Timothy 2:15 — 44 — QRAdUAteS DORIS JOHNSON Grand Rapids, Michigan The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, end my high tower. S. students gather in various rooms of the school building to send up prayer to God in behalf of missions. These groups known as Missionary Prayer Bands represent almost every section of the world. Requests received from missionaries are carefully laid before the Lord; united hearts express their praise because of answers received in behalf of previous prayers; and students earnestly pray, Lord, show us Thy will for each one of our lives. During these times of gathering many students receive unexpect- ed surprises. Some who feel that they are called to the mission field find that God wants them here at home. Others, who are certain that their labors will be here at home, find God calling them to the mission field. Yes, surely these are times of spiritual growth for all; the blessings of participation are there for all who will avail themselves of them. One thing is certain, all who consistently participate in the various m'ssion prayer bands will with one voice proclaim the Thursday morning meetings to be among the mountain top experiences of their sojourn at B. T. S. — 53 — Practical WoRk 6epARtment We students praise God for the practical work department. We feel that it is one of the most important parts of the school. To us it means new opportunities for serving the Lord while in train- ing, thereby helping to keep our hearts warm towards God and our fellow men. Here it is that we get a chance to put to use the things we have been learning in school and a chance to improve what abilities we do have. To many of the people we contact while on our assignments it means the difference between life and death — eternal life and eternal death. Many have come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior through our ministry, and many Christians have been led deeper into the grace and knowledge of our Lord. To the school it means a chance to further help and supervise the students under actual working conditions’1, as well as making our school better known to the public to the glory of God. And we feel that this department is important in the Lord's sight also, for here He can test our fai-thfulness to Him and strengthen us for the time when we shall stand alone for Him in the work to which He calls us. This year has brought a new set-up in the practical work department under the able supervision of our professor, Mr. Warren Faber. Each place where work is carried on by the students beneath the guidance of the school is directly under the leadership of a Seminary man. Several students labor to minister the Word with him in their particular place, with the leader striving to give each one new opportunities of service and to give the people a variety In the program. Since leaders and workers are on the assignment for a full semester, the personal contact is good, and we feel that we are better able to reach those who have become our friends than we would be able to reach complete strangers. — 54 — iyi-.L-V;1; .' It is an organization open to all the girls in the Bible Institute, to the wives of the Seminary men, and to the alumni. Meetings are held on the last Friday night of each month at the girls' dormitory, Van Osdel Hall. It is the aim of these monthly meet- ings to promote a better acquaintance among the g'rls, to have a time of real Christian fellowship with one another, and to be strengthened spiritually. An interesting and outstanding program is planned each month. These programs are mads up of messages by various speakers, missionary films, Bible studies, and missionary projects combined with a much-enjoyed social time centering around games, skits, group singing, special numbers, and refreshments. Our missionary pro- ject this year is making bandages to be used on the mission field. The officers of the organization elected at our first meeting are; Betty Gray, president; Melba Ehm, vice-president; and Jessie Simpson, secretary-treasurer. We feel that Girls' Fellowship has contributed a great deal to our school year, not only in the way of Christian good times, but, more important, we feel that we have benefited spiritually from our gatherings. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month, and especially qualified men are invited to lecture to the group at these gatherings. Such men include professors of other Seminaries, pastors who are qualified in some particular field, and, last but not least, professors of our own Seminary. The purpose of these lectures is to minister to both our intellectual and spiritual needs. Attendance is open to professors, Seminary and Pre-seminary men, and Seminary alumni. As edifying as the lectures are, there is usually an equal amount of value received from the informal discussion immediately afterwards. It is in these discussions that we find the answers to the problems that are always cropping up in class when there is no time to discuss them. Men, the Seminary Club is yours. Working quietly behind the scenes, the Council has made an earnest endeavor to promote the general welfare of the student body. At the opening of the school year two representatives are elected to the Council by each class other than the Seminary classes, which are represented by their class president. These representatives gathered early in September for their initial meeting and promptly settled down to the task of organizing. Robert Eldredge was elected president of the group, and Melba Ehm was selected to fill the office of secretary. With the officers duly installed, their first decision was to meet the first Wednesday morning of each month. Then the group took a bird's-eye view of the school year ahead and laid out a tentative program to guide their activities. The first meeting dosed with each representive deter- mined to make this school year an outstanding one. In May of '52 when the results of the annual staff election were announced, we, the honored ones, looked forward to the coming year with anticipation. Little did we know of the many hours which would be spent slaving over the Kumi-Ori of '52-'53, resulting in aching heads, blood-shot eyes, calloused and sticky fingers, and dulled minds. As the deadline approached for pictures, seniors raced to Bultman’s, underclassmen stood in line at school, and at the most unexpected moment a flash was seen— Sterk had shot another innocent victim. Students racked their brains, running up and down the halls searching for material for the article which was due the preceding day. Finally, after six — more or less — deadlines had been set, all pictures, articles, sketches, etc., were collected and prepared for the printer. Cheer up, future members of the Kumi-Ori staff. It's really not too bad — that is, after the book is printed. Seriously, we have enjoyed our work, and our prayer is that this Kumi-Ori may be a blessing to all who read it as it goes forth representing our Lord Jesus Christ and our school. From behind the pages of a Hebrew Bible peers a determined, but bloodshot, eye. Staggering under his load of studies, he suddenly rises and goes to the phone. Hello, he mutters, Is this Professor Matthews? Say, this is Syl Boner. Several of the fellows and I are studying for the finals tomorrow, and we wondered if we could borrow your ice cream freezer? And so go the lives of the married students. Life at the dormitories is somewhat different. There are many activities in which a student living at a dorm may participate. The girls, for instance, have a monthly get-together which they have labeled Girl’s Fellowship. Aside from a night of fun, it is strongly believed by the male constituency that plans are laid for the capture of the elusive, but eligible bachelor. The girls you see, also have other Felerships. The boy dormatant leads an entirely different life. Under the competent thumb of the House Father, the lovable Dr. Quincer, he devotes most of his time and energy dreaming up methods of escape from the judicial enforcement of the rules. If you should drive past the dorm after 11:00 at night and see half of a student protruding from a second story window, don’t turn in the fire alarm: he’s not trying to get out! He’s sneaking in after hours! —-64 — 65 66 6iRect0Rv Faculty Gerard Knol, President.....704 Lovett Ave., Grand Rapids, Mich..........
