Wy .5 t Independent Council, better known as I. G., is the organization which provides activity and expression for the independent students at Cornell. It is repre- sented in Student Council and at student-faculty con- ferences. Through the elforts olf its members a coin- plete prelim file has been set up in the Library, discounts have been provided on special buses char- tered for vacations and out-of-town football games, and a special railroad discount has been attained. Last year the Council was instrumental in setting up the Remedial Reading Clinic which has now been taken over by the University. These services have benehted more than the independent students, they are serv- ices to the entire campus. Projects new this year were the organization ol an active date bureau through the dorm captains and the inspection ol' available rooms in College Town. Hayrides, small parties, and dances were planned lor the members, and participation in intraniural sports was also included in the prograin. The Board of Governors, elected twice yearly by the xnenibership, is the group responsible for the plan- ning and success of I. C.'s activities.

The class of '54 lost no time in getting underway after their November election of oiiicers and councils. At their hrst meeting, the XN'o1nen's Council selected their class colors, navy blue and white, plus the monkey as class mascot, with an adjoining slogan, No monkey business. Then, at a Christmas recep- tion, the council and class officers were introduced- Ruth Carpenter, presidentg Betsy Hynes, secretary- treasurerg Barbara Schissel, historian, Joan Dinkel, song-leader-and committees organized to work with the council. Witll Spring came the Freshman-Junior coed's party and the Freshman Banquet in Dickson. J I TERFR TER ITY COUNCIL The best Interfraternity Council in the Country -the Cornell Council boasts representation from Hfty- one fraternities, each house sending its president and one sophomore or junior to the monthly meetings. The Council system of sell-government, which includes initial jurisdiction over its member houses, controls fraternity rushing and sponsors a disaster and fire-prevention plan lor its member houses, and the Bowdoin Plan, providing housing and aid for foreign students. The main events sponsored by the IFC are the Pledge Assembly and Smokers, Christmas parties for underprivileged children and shut-ins, and the spring X'Vork lfVeek, a period ol' co-operative discussion between houses and representatives of the IFC and other campus organizations. Among the years innovas tions were a Newsletter with the avowed purpose of enlarging and publicizing IFC activities, a Social Com- mittee, and a Scholarship Committee which looks toward the maintenance of an IFC average which, for the first time in fifteen years, has exceeded tl1e inde- pendent average. 25
