We are in a year that has brought forth many great men. But this is wartime, it is their common effort, not their individual achievements, that is important. Cornellians are in this battle on all of its fronts. In every service uniform and in every field of home activity, in the air and in the factories, on the sea and on the farms, in Washington and in the Pacific, Cornellians are fighting. Some are building weapons, and some are earning undying glory using them. In laboratories, in victory gardens, in Fortresses over Berlin, each does his best. They are a cross-section of our Nation meeting its great- est challenge, these Cornellians fighting for the ideals they shared at Cornell. lt is to them that this book is dedicated.

F 0 R E W O R D m S Y t a 4 HIS was a War year at Cornell This was 'iii-7 . also the seventy-fifth year of publication of the Cornellian. But this volume is no gala anniversary issue. It is a Wartime book designed to tell a Wartime story. This year, the old familiar setting no longer housed the old familiar Cornell. Some of the symptoms of the times came to be taken for granted-uniforms, shortages, restrictions, and the like. But there Was something that could never be taken for granted-the uncertainty in the status of every individual and his future. The early months of production of the Cor- nellian saw many changes. Many people left school, and many new conditions came to affect those who remained. By the time that this book leaves the presses, many more changes will have taken place. Perhaps then, and in the days and years to come, renewing memories of the pattern of college life as it was in pre-War days and at the same time recalling the impact of war, this book will bring to mind the Cornell that those who left the Hill left behind. If some of these intangible things are 'caught in the pages that follow, the 1943 Cornellian will have Well served its purpose. 'A' 'A' 'ir -k
