The Cornellian Council The activities of the Cornellian Council are centered in the building up of the Alum- ni Fund which represents the combined contributions, large and small, of a large group of alumni. The alumni fund is making it possible for the University to meet situations for which the income from the endowment of Cornell does not provide. Small gifts to the University are made valuable by reason of their large number and solidarity of purpose and at the same time interest is created which can be created in no other way. he larger part of the gifts to the Alumni Fund are unrestricted and are available for appropriation by the Trustees where most needed. Gifts to the Cornellian Council may, however, be allocated for special purposes, and when so allocated are used for these purposes only. The membership of the Cornellian Council is made up of one representative from each class, forty at-large members elected by the Council, and an unlimited number of honorary and geographical representatives. Payments of subscriptions to the Alumni Fund, as soon as received by the Executive Secretary of the Council, are immediately forwarded to the Treasurer of the Univer- sity. More than 51,000,000 has thus been contributed by alumni of Cornell to Cornell University through the organization of the Cornellian Council since 1908. The Cornellian Council undertakes from time to time to raise funds for special projects. Under the able leadership of Robert E. Treman, ,O9, the War Memorial Committee, of which he was chairman, last year raised over S300,000 for the towers and cloisters which will soon be erected in commemoration of Cornell's heroic dead. The past year also saw the completion of a fund of S7.00,000 for the John E. Sweet Distinguished Professorship to be used to endow a professorship in mechanical engi- neering, with which college Professor Sweet was so intimately connected for many years. Other similar projects are now under way. One of the principal reasons for the gratifying increase of the Alumni Fund has been the whole-hearted support accorded it by succeeding graduating classes.
