I 'G 9 The Cornellz an ou nczl The Cornellian Council, founded in 1908, is the Alumni organization which has for its purpose the stimu- lation of alumni interest in the financial support of the University. The founders of the Council had in mind the idea of doing away with indiscriminate and merely occasional solicitation of the Alumni and of having all appeals for the University's needs made by one organization vested with authority. The wisdom of this plan is now acknowledged by the faculty, trustees, and alumni, and the soundness of the plan has been I shown in other universities as well as Cornell. Small gifts to the University are made valuable by reason of their large number and solidarity of purpose and at the same time interest is created which can be created in no other way The larger part of the gifts to the Alumni Fund are unrestricted and are available for appropriation by the Trustees where most needed. Gifts to the University through the Cornellian Council may, however, be allocated for special purposes and when so allocated are used for these purposes only. The membership of the Cornellian Council is made up of one member representative from each of the classes, forty members at large, elected by the Council, and an indefinite number of honorary members. Payments on all subscriptions to the Alumni Fund as soon as received by the Executive Secretary of the ,f Council, are immediately forwarded to the Treasurer of the University. More than 31,500,000 has been l contributed by alumni of Cornell to Cornell University through the organization of the Cornellian Council since 1908. The Cornellian Council undertakes from time to Xtime, to raise funds for special projects. At present, Robert E. Treman, '09, is chairman of a committee, appointed by the Cornellian Council, to raise S7.SO,' ooo to construct a special dormitory group as a war memorial to honor the memory of the two hundred thirty-eight Cornell men who gave their lives in the ' World War. Frank E. Gannett, '98, president of the Cornellian Council, has been in constant and intimate contact with the University and its problems for more than thirty years, first as one of the editors' of the Cornell Daily Sun when an undergraduate, later, Secretary ' to Ex-President Schurman, editor of the Alumni News, editor and publisher of the Ithaca Journal W News, president of two of the Cornell Alumni Clubs, chairman of one of the Semi-Centennial En- dowment committees, and, for a number of years, a member of the Executive Committee of the Cornel- lian Council. Last Spring, Mr. Gannett was elected a trustee of the University by the Alumni. Mr. Gannett is the editor and publisher of seven important newspapers in New York State and is recognized as one of the leading journalists in this country. The Cornellian Council is fortunate in having as its president this loyal, enthusiastic, and able graduate, who is willing to devote himself un- FRANK E. GANNETT, '98 stintingly for the best interest of Cornell. Pmidcnr aaa e . - . r ' W 9 gg 9 9 IL I 35
