places respectively. Cornell's hurdlers again showed their strength in the 220 yard event by winning three places for a total of nine points. Wh Smith, '20, Was second, YV. H. Cleminshavv, '19, third, and E. B. Bickford, '20, fourth. The finish of the half-mile run proved the sensation of the day, for it was only by a great spurt in the last fifty yards that Shaw of Columbia was able to Win the race from K. A. Nlayer, '20, breaking the tape only inches ahead of the Cornell runner. The time Was 1:56 4-5. Cornell surpassed all expectations in the broad jump when R. K. Felter, '20, Won the event With a jump of 22 feet, six inches. H. E. Shackelton, '19, and W. Smith, '20, placed third and fourth respectively. The scoring of these points, coming as they did at a critical time, clinched the meet for Cornell. In the mile run R. D. Nlaynard, '19, took fourth place, and R. Bangs, '20, took fifth place in theihammer throw, adding to the total of the Red and White. - Previous to the Intercollegiate meet it Was thought by many that the quality of the competition Would be much inferior to that of normal years. lt Was found, however, to be up to a standard much higher than Was expected, although many of the experienced men had answered their country's call. The 1918 team, not unlike that of 1914, came up from obscurity and left its mark in the annals of Cornell athletics. The 1918 victory came from a group of men who were Without experience, but Who were determined to Win in spite of every disadvantage. They Worked faithfully under the experienced guardian- ship of Coach hfoakley, and developed into a championship team. , . . , .5 7 'iz V ' ifi'l3': 12. i5.''11-Ie-.wrffiif:-.Te'-,s.E:1Qv'Si'VT''Tl ' .
