CHARLES E. COURTNEY Joi-IN L, COLLYER Review of the 1918 Crew Season ln the fall of IQI7, crew practice started early. A large body of candidates reported for work on the machines and practice was held in the crew room. The material was good and the prospects for a winning crew were encouraging. Mr. Courtney took the men in hand, and with the usual vigor began rounding them into shape. Early in the spring, the ice having gone out of the inlet, activities were trans- ferred to the Water and daily pulling in the gigs took the place of the work on the machines. Mr. Courtney, later assisted by John L Collyer, 717, former Varsity stroke, made frequent changes in the seating in an effort to form perfect corn- binations in both the Varsity and Freshman eights. A little later the men were put into shells and after a few trips on the inlet, were sent out on the lake for trips to Crow Bar accompanied by lVIr. Courtney and Mr. Collyer in the launch. Then Maiiager Carlos Lazo appeared with the glad tidings of a scheduled race with Princeton, and with this prospect in view, the competition for places in the boats became more heated. On the evening of lVIay 22nd the final Varsity and Freshman eights left for Princeton accompanied by Assistant Manager Keith Benson, hir. Collyer having left the preceding day. All four crews were in the pink of condition and the races were extremely exciting. The Freshman race, which came first, was won by Cornell with a lead of about eight boat lengths. The Varsity, however, although they rowed in splendid form, lost their lead of a length, which they had held up to the mile mark, in manoeuvering the sharp turn in the course and were nosed out at the finish by less than one third of a length. Despite the fact that the Varsity did not bring home the laurels both crews deserve the highest praise and it is to be hoped that the season of 1919 will see Cornell in her accustomed position at the head of the list of rowing colleges. 514
