not man alone, but for that greater entity which includes man, the Cornell country is a veritable lil Dorado. lfspecially is this true in the autumn-time, when the forest burns into crimson and aureate, like the banners of a barbaric host. livery deep, romantic chasm that slants down into Cayuga is fringed with the glorious splendor of the dying summer. And when one has wandered afar into the countryside he may yet hear the chimes in the tower clang as they clanged on that fair Uctober day in 1865 when, for the lirst time, the bells rang out the message of Cornell. To the minds of many a Cornellian the great tower ofthe Sage-McGraw Library visualizes the spirit of Cornell, just as the chimes that ring out from that tower vocalize the same spirit. Our friend the tyro casts his eyes caressingly upon the tower and mumbles an awed tribute. He doffs his cap when the bells ring out that grand old air of Alma Mateifl If our tyro be of the usual run of tyro, the tower stands for invincible crews and golden degrees in engineering. But we, who have lived with the University, have come to consider her as more than a mere mechanical dispensator of crews and diplomas. To us she is a great heart, drawing in the life-blood of humanity from the extremities of the universe, and sending it back again to battle, inspired with a new vitality and a new strength. 'fo us the University is a great light set upon a hill, sending forth its calm and piercing beams to illuminate the dark places of the world. And when, in a chill and misty gloaming, we hear the dauntless bells clang out their merry pzeans to the gathering night we journey back to the first days of Cornell, to the days when the University consisted of twain crude and unimpres- sive blocks of buildings, to the days when the voice of the calumniator Was abroad in the land and when the dusky clouds of doubt and misgiving hovered over the humble beginnings of Cornell. Then, as the years roll onward, we see the tall tower that symbolizes Cornell rise slowly to completion, the bells ring forth their happy strains from a new vantage-point and the mists fade, to discover a glorious sunset of imperial purple and heart-ruddy gold: When the sun fades far away Music with the twilight falls ' In the crimson of the West, O,er the dreaming lake and dell- And the voices of the day ,Tis an echo from the Walls Murmur low and sink to rest, Of our own-our fair Cornellf,-C.E.S. l I ..,..
