To the latter we open ' what we hope is a field of novel freshness, to the former we regret thatwe can but offer a summary of what is already theirs. Regret, said we? No, for, whereas first impressions are good, latter impressions are better. Latter impres- sions make us glory in our estate of mature Cornellians: for the sake of first im- pressions we recall with equanimity the days when we were freshmen .......... The long train toils up from Wilkesbarre in the dull heat of the late-Septem- ber afternoon. Hill and valley, meadow and orchard, wood and cornfield, hamlet, town and city, the vast revolving prospect sweeps on and on. Then, at length, comes the cry of Hlthacal lthacall' The tyro presses to the window, athrill with a new and wonder-born eagerness. The University! The University that his fancy has so often framed-the University of his dreams-is before him in ac- tuality! There glooms the blue Cayuga, soon to waver into wizard fancies of purples and greens, there the long street clambers up through the town that nestles, like the Camelot of old, on the breast of a steep hill, there the tall Romanesque tower ofthe Library points its steadfast finger to the heavens. Cornell! The opening days of university life will fairly teem with novelty for our tyro, be he bankeris son or farmer's boy. When, forty-six years ago, Ezra Cor- nell founded the University that bears his name he founded it primarily for the educational betterment of the farmer boys of New York State. But, since those first raw days, the University has grown to assume a broader policy-a policy more in accordance with its true significance as a university-a University whose gates stand Open to any young man who desires the fuller training, be he white or brown, Christian or Mohammedan, and whether he hail from Sitka or from Sayre, from Manhattan or from Pekin. ln those first bustling days of October, the man who has never been outside of one State, and the man who, in coming to Cornell, has traversed thousands of leagues of sea and mountain and plain, both drink with avidity from the same vast effervescing cup of new life-the life of the Great American University-the life of Cornell. And to that just and equable person who makes place in his uses of life for 6
