As Dean, he has labored steadily to adjust the College of Law to the needs of the day, and to give a practical training which will Well equip men for entering upon the duties of the legal pro- fession. In the class-room, his familiarity with the field of law has enabled him to present his subjects directly and simply. In spite of pressing and absorbing duties, Dean Irvine has found time to lend a guiding hand to the management of athletics. As President of the Athletic Council, his tact and his foresight have been indispensable in avoiding embarrasing complications, in pro- moting new relations and in maintaining cordiality and friendliness of feeling with other universities. In all seasons, in weather fair, in Weather inclement, the well known figure of the Judge is pres- ent on the athletic field to inspire and cheer. He has ever stood for the highest ideals in sport. He has ever believed fair play more important than victory. He has ever gloried in Cornell's un-1 assailable reputation for clean sport and manly conduct. Long after this book has ceased to be read, long after the pleasures of student days have yielded to the cares and turmoil of later years, clear and undimmed Will still linger the recollection of the Judge. He was graduated from Cornell, as a Bachelor of Science in 1880, and three years later he received the degree of Bachelor of Laws at the National Univer- sity, Washington. After his admission to the Bar he became As- sistant District Attorney in the District of Columbia, an office which he filled during the years 1883 to 1884. In 1884 he took up the practice of law in Omaha, Nebraska, and from 1891 to 1893 he held the Judgeship of the Fourth District Court in Nebraska, a posi- tion which he resigned to become Supreme Court Commissioner. After the completion of six years in this service, giving up his law practice, he accepted the Professorship of Pleading and Practice, in the Cornell College of Law, and in June, 1907, he was made Dean.
