Born at Sharon, Pennsylvania, in 1858, his career of fifty-one years has not been confined to his own state. He was graduated from Cornell, as a Bachelor of Science in 1880, and three years later he received the degree of Bachelor of Laws at the National Univer- sity, Washington. After his admission to the Bar he became As- sistant District Attorney in the District of Columbia, an office which he filled during the years 1883 to 1884. In 1884 he took up the practice of law in Omaha, Nebraska, and from 1891 to 1893 he held the Judgeship of the Fourth District Court in Nebraska, a posi- tion which he resigned to become Supreme Court Commissioner. After the completion of six years in this service, giving up his law practice, he accepted the Professorship of Pleading and Practice, in the Cornell College of Law, and in June, 1907, he was made Dean.
