imnfeasnt Qlhttt E. Qmitb ,air Q? N dedicating this book to Professor Albert 6' ' 'Q in ' W. Smith, we have endeavored to show him in our feeble way, somewhat of the feeling fi al l agp 5 ein 2 of enthusiastic friendship and goodwill that the undergraduates bear toward him. Also their appreciation for what he has done and, I Q Q we feel sure, will do for Cornell. Seldom Q, -Fr do we find a man who combines all the ual- iba ii ities which students so admire as does Dircdctor Smith-a good man, a good professor and a good fellow. And this admiration is not confined to his own students alone, but by reason of their praise and his enviable reputation as an athlete, he has come to be known and respected by all loyal Cornellians. V Albert William Smith was born August 3oth, 1856, in Westmoreland, Oneida County, New York. In that place he re- sided until 1874, when he entered Cornell, graduating with the class of '78, receiving the degree of B. M. E. Immediately thereafter he entered the employ of the Brown 85 Sharp Man- ufacturing Company in Providence, Rhode Island, and in a short time became a contractor in that establishment. He was next associated with Professor John H. Sweet at the Straight Line Engine Works in Syracuse, remaining there until 1882. In that year he accepted a position in Oswego as Mechanical Engineer for Mr. Thompson Kingsford.
